The Herz conac in chain elasic collisions P. Parício Insiuo Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa Rua Conselheiro Emídio Naarro, P-949-4 Lisboa, Porugal (January 4) arxi:physics/46 [physics.ed-ph] 6 Feb 4 A heoreical analysis abou he influence of he Herz elasic conac on a hree body chain collision is presened. In spie of he elasic characer of he collision, he final elociy of each paricles depends on he paricular ineracion beween hem. A sysem inoling wo elasic spheres falling ogeher one in op of he oher under he acion of graiy, and colliding wih an horizonal hard wall is sudied in deail. The effec of he Herz conac ineracion can be easily pu in eidence for some paricular siuaions. PACS numbers:.4.-a, 46..+b I. INTRODUCTION When wo balls are dropped ogeher, boh erically aligned and hiing he ground a he same ime, an ineresing rebound effec is obained. If he smaller ball is aboe, i may rise surprisingly high ino he air. This effec may sill be enhanced if one drops a chain of balls, ordered by heir relaie weigh, he lighes ball a he op. This sysem was already discussed in pedagogical aricles more han years ago, assuming perfec and independen elasic collisions beween each pair of balls [ ]. I was considered an aracie and ideal sysem o sudy elasic collisions. Howeer, if he balls are dropped ogeher, all collisions will happen a he same ime. Because hey are no insananeous, he final elociy disribuion of he balls will be dependen on he paricular ineracions beween hem, een in hose cases where he ineracions are elasic, i.e., wih no loss of energy. In heir beauiful aricle [], he class of W. G. Harer considered a some poin non-insananeous collisions. To sudy hem, hey inroduced a simple quasi-linear model, which could be alid if we hink no of spheres bu of uni-dimensional springs. The dynamical differenial equaions were soled using an analog compuer program. Howeer, hey concluded ha he quasi-linear model did no agree wih heir experimenal resuls, and hey proposed a phenomenological non linear model. The ineracion field was hen obained direcly from empirical daa, by dropping a ball ono a pained fla meal surface from arying heighs. In his way he ineracion could be ploed as a funcion of he spo size, and eenually as a funcion of he depression of he ball. Alhough he sraegy o obain he non linear ineracion was remarkable, he discussion ha followed was no sufficienly deeloped. In fac, from he heoreical poin of iew and as a firs approximaion, he analysis of he non-insananeous muliple collisions effec should ake ino accoun he ineracion beween wo elasic spheres obeying Hooke s law, which is always alid for sufficienly small deformaions. This problem is known in he lieraure as he Herz conac [6]. In his aricle, a sysem inoling muliple collisions beween wo differen elasic spheres, one on op of he oher, wih he same iniial elociy, hiing a planar hard horizonal wall is considered. In Secion II, he resuls obained for insananeous elasic collisions are briefly reiewed. Nex, he Herz conac is inroduced in he mahemaical model of he sysem. A he end, he resuls of his heoreical analysis are presened. The main differences beween independen and non-insananeous collisions are oulined and discussed. II. INDEPENDENT COLLISIONS Consider a sysem wih wo elasic spheres, one on op of he oher, falling wih he same elociy, colliding wih he ground, as represened in Fig.. FIG.. Two differen elasic spheres falling wih he same elociy colliding wih he ground. Assume a ery small gap beween he spheres, such ha all collisions can be reaed indiidually. Firs, he lower sphere his he rigid wall and reurns wih he same elociy. Nex, he spheres collide elasically. The final elociies u and u (of lower and upper sphere respeciely) can be calculaed hrough momenum and energy conseraion principle, and are independen of he paricular ineracion. If m = m /m is he spheres mass raio, we can wrie:
u = m +m () u = m +m, () where he posiie sign corresponds o he upward orienaion. The upper sphere may rebound wih a elociy up o hree imes greaer han is iniial one, for a anishingly small mass raio. Tha is, if is mass is much smaller han he mass of he lower sphere. In fac, he rebound may be enhanced if we add o his sysem exra spheres, all falling wih he same iniial elociy. To sudy his effec, consider firs he elasic collision beween wo spheres wih a mass raio m bu wih differen iniial elociies. The upper sphere sill moes wih a downward elociy. The lower sphere has now preiously collide wih anoher sphere and moes upward wih a elociy a (a > ). The final elociies are now gien by: u = a (a+)m +m () u = +a m +m. (4) Naurally, equaions () and () are recoered if a =. For a sysem wih n spheres, he upper one may achiee a final elociy of ( n ), if all mass raios are anishingly small. Anoher ineresing limi o his sysem, for a cerain disribuion of mass raios, concerns he case for which all lower spheres sop, and only he upper one rises ino he air. In his siuaion, all iniial energy was ransmied o only one sphere. In he simple sysem composed of only wo spheres, he lower one has null final elociy for m = /, whereas he upper sphere rebounds o reach wice is iniial elociy. III. NON INSTANTANEOUS COLLISIONS Howeer, if he spheres fall ogeher, he assumpion of independen collisions may no longer be accurae. For he sysem represened in Fig., boh collisions - of he lower sphere wih he ground and of he wo spheres - will happen a he same ime. To obain he final elociies, afer he spheres separaion, i is imporan o know he paricular ineracion beween hem. In he following subsecions, one presens he simples possible ineracion: i will be assumed ha all solids respec Hooke s law of elasiciy, alid for sufficienly small deformaions. The dynamical equaions for his model will hen be esablished and soled. A. The Herz conac The heory of he elasic conac beween solids was firs sudied by H. Herz, and i can be followed in deail in Ref. [6]. For wo isoropic and homogeneous elasic spheres, wih radius of curaure respeciely of R and R (see Fig. ), he elasic poenial energy E p depends on he combined deformaion h as: E p = er h, () where he reduced radius r = R R /(R + R ) and he reduced elasic consan e is dependen on he Young moduli E, E and on he Poisson coefficiens σ, σ. I is gien by: e = 4 ( σ + ) σ. (6) E E The Young modulus increases wih he solid rigidiy, whereas he Poisson coefficien is ypically slighly smaller han /. FIG.. Elasic conac beween wo spheres. The elasic energy () is alid for a saic deformaion. Neerheless, i can be considered a good approximaion for he siuaion sudied in his aricle if he elociy is much smaller han he sound elociies of he solids inoled. I is ineresing o noice ha his approximaion fis well he experimenal poenial energy obained by he class of W. G. Harer [], in he firs regime of small ball depressions. For large depressions, he energy increased wih a greaer power of h, which is in agreemen wih he fac ha Hooke s elasic regime only ake ino accoun he firs erms of he elasic energy power expansion on he deformaion. I is insrucie o calculae he maximum heigh of deformaion and he conac ime of wo colliding spheres. Suppose ν is he relaie elociy of he spheres before he collision, and µ = m m /(m + m ) heir reduced mass. Then, he energy conseraion principle reads: ( ) dh µ + d er h = µν. (7) The maximum heigh of deformaion occurs when he relaie elociy is zero and can be wrien: ( µ h M = 4er h ) ν 4. (8) The collision ime corresponds o he ime in which he deformaion goes from o h M and back o again. I is gien by:
( ) µ τ = 6e rν dx x ( ) µ.. (9) e rν These are he relean lengh and ime for elasic collision problems, and hey will be useful o wrie down dimensionless dynamical equaions. B. Dynamical equaions For he sysem represened in Fig., he oal poenial energy is gien by he sum: C. Numerical resoluion The se of differenial dynamical equaions () and (6) was soled numerically using a simple and sandard Euler mehod, for differen alues of he parameers. Fig. shows seeral soluions found for he posiions x and x as funcions of ime, saring when he wo spheres iniially in conac hi he ground wih he same elociy, unil hey separae wih consan final elociies u and u. The axis hae arbirary unis. The soluions were calculaed for spheres wih he same Young modulus and densiy, bu four differen mass raios m =.,.,, (wich were obained choosing appropriae sphere radii). E p = e r h + e r h, () where he firs erm akes ino accoun he ineracion beween he firs sphere and he rigid ground, wih infinie Young modulus and radius of curaure, and he second erm is he ineracion beween boh spheres. The deformaions depend on he posiions x and x of he ceners of he spheres (he ground defining he reference posiion): h = H(R x ), () h = H ((R + R ) (x x )). () The funcion H(x) = x if x > and H(x) = oherwise. The equaions of moion m i ẍ i = E p / x i, (i =, ), will simply be wrien: m ẍ = e r h e r h, () m ẍ = e r h. (4) If one inroduces naural unis, L = (m /e r ) and T = L/, which are associaed wih he maximum heigh of depression and he ime of conac beween he ground and he firs sphere, i is possible o define dimensionless ariables. The equaions of moion may be wrien in a simpler form: ẍ = h kh, () mẍ = kh. (6) They only depend on wo parameers, m = m /m, (7) k = e r /e r. (8) Noe ha k is defined as a raio of he reduced elasic consans and radius. If he infinie rigidiy of he planar wall is aken ino accoun, we hae e > e and r > r. For his sysem, one concludes ha k <. x x x x m=. x x m=. m= m= FIG.. The posiions x and x as a funcion of ime, for spheres wih he same Young modulus and densiy, and four differen mass raios m =.,.,,. The axis hae arbirary unis. The bold lines represen he ground and he cener of he spheres. In hinner lines, x ± R and x ± R are also represened, o indicae in which periods of ime he ineracion exiss. Surprisingly, for a ery small mass raio, he spheres hae almos he same elociy u u afer he rebound. This siuaion conrass wih he resuls obained considering independen collisions, for which he maximum elociy gain would be expeced. In fac, if he mass raio m is negligible, i is possible o see from Eq. 6 ha he deformaion h will also be ery small, exhering almos no influence in he moion of he lower sphere (see Eq. ). The laer sphere rebounds wih he wall and reurns wih elociy u. Since h R, i may be concluded ha R x x. Then ẍ ẍ, which means ha boh spheres sick ogeher during he collision as if hey were one whole body [7]. I is also ineresing o noice ha for mass raios greaer han one (in he case of he figure wih m = ) he hree body collision ges more complex, wih he boom sphere making seeral rebounds beween he ground and he oher sphere. I is imporan o menion ha he final elociies do no depend on he ampliude of he spheres deformaions x x
during he collisions. If boh spheres were more rigid, bu keeping he same raio k, he deformaions could be ery small, and sill he final elociies would be equal o he ones represened in Fig.. In Fig. 4, he bold lines represen he final elociy disribuions u and u as funcions of m <, for differen alues of E /E =.,.,,. The hin lines show he resuls of equaions () and (), considering independen collisions. E =.E E =.E u m u u u u E =E E =E m u u u m m FIG. 4. Velociy disribuions u and u as funcions of m <. The hin lines correspond o he resuls obained for independen collisions and hey are independen of he raio beween he Young moduli. In bold, he elociies obained considering he Herz conac for E /E =.,.,,. The independen collisions resuls are recoered for small alues of he raio E /E, and consequenly for small k. This is paricularly rue for he final elociy disribuion of he lower sphere u. In fac, if k, i is possible o see from Eq. ha in a firs momen, he moion of he lower sphere will depend mainly on is ineracion wih he wall he deformaion h beween boh spheres will hae a negligible conribuion when i is compared wih he deformaion h beween he lower sphere and he wall. Howeer, if he collision ime beween boh spheres is large enough (as i is shown in Eq. 9, he collision ime increases for small k), afer he lower sphere-wall ineracion, he erms conaining he deformaion h will be he only ones presen in he equaions of moion. Therefore, he collisions can be considered as almos independen and subsequenial. Neerheless, as he final elociy u is concerned, he conergence does no occur for all alues of m: i is possible o see in Fig. 4 (E /E =.) ha he final speed u as he mass raio m. As E /E (or k) increases, small changes can be seen in he final elociy disribuions, and he independen collisions approximaion is no longer appliable. These changes are limied because he infinie rigidiy assumpion requires k <. In fac, he elociy disribuions for E /E is no ery differen from he one represened for E /E = The lef par of Fig. represen he rebound maximum speed u M as a funcion of k <. On he righ, he mass raio m M corresponding o he maximum rebound speed is also ploed. m M decreases rapidly o zero as k. u M. k k FIG.. Maximum rebound speed u M and corresponding mass raio m M as a funcion of k < (according o he infinie rigidiy of he wall assumpion). The disconinuiy on he slope obsered for he final elociy u in Fig. 4 (E /E =.) corresponds o he criical alue m c for which he lower sphere sops compleely. If m > m c, his sphere rebounds wice off he ground, before i reaches he final elociy represened in he figure. If he raio beween he Young moduli increases, he disconinuiy changes firs is posiion (E /E =.), and eenually i disappears (E /E = and larger alues). Howeer, hese disconinuiies will happen again for larger alues of m, as he lower sphere rebounds more and more in beween he ground and he upper sphere. This curious feaure can be seen in Fig. 6, which represens he elociy disribuions u and u as funcions of /m <, for E /E =. As /m approaches, i.e., when he lower sphere becomes much ligher han he op one, he number of collisions increases o infiniy. u /m FIG. 6. Velociy disribuions u and u as funcions of /m <, for E /E =. These resuls correspond o he resuls obained only considering non-insananeous collisions.. m M IV. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS In his aricle, he influence of he Herz conac on muliple chain collisions was sudied in deail. I was shown ha he independen collisions approximaion is no longer alid for small alues of he mass raio m and large alues of he rigidiy raio k. To undersand he resuls obained here, i is imporan o consider he ypical wo-body imes of collision (see Eq. 9). Firs, suppose m is of he order of uniy. If u 4
k is small, he wo-body collision ime beween he lower sphere and he wall, τ, is smaller han he wo-body collision ime beween boh spheres, τ. As k, he firs collision occurs almos insananeously, and subsequenly, he wo spheres collide. Thus, he resuls obained considering his limi approach he independen collisions resuls. Howeer, as k increases, τ also increases. The collisions become more eoled, and i is difficul o rea hem separaely. Despie is complexiy, he final elociy disribuions u and u approach each oher for large k and small m. In his limi (m ), as i was prooed hrough he analysis of he equaions of moion, boh spheres behae as if hey belonged o he same body, changing heir elociies ogeher as hey inerac wih he ground. A he end, boh spheres rebound wih equal final elociies u u. The resuls obained wih his model were summarized in Fig., which clearly indicaes he bes parameers m and k o experimenally pu in eidence he influence of he Herz conac on chain elasic collisions.
