Prjectins Used t shw a spherical surface n a flat surface Distrtin Shape Distance True Directin Area Different Classes Thse that minimize distrtin in shape are called cnfrmal. Thse that minimize distrtin in distance are knwn as equidistant. Thse that minimize distrtin in area are knwn as equalarea. Thse minimizing distrtin in directin are called truedirectin prjectins.

Datums Prjectins In the image, the earth is shwn as the irregular surface (thick black line). A generalized earth-centered crdinate system (WGS84, in blue) prvides a gd verall mean slutin fr all places n the earth. Hwever, fr specific lcal measurements, WGS84 cannt accunt fr lcal variatins. Instead, lcal datums have been develped. In this example, the lcal Nrth American Datum f 1927 (NAD27, in dashed red line) mre clsely fits the earth's surface in the upper-left quadrant f the earth's crss-sectin. NAD27 nly fits this quadrant, s t use it in anther part f the earth will result in serius errrs in measurement. Fr mapping Nrth America, in rder t btain the mst accurate lcatins and measurements, NAD27 r NAD83/91 are used.
