Bell Ringer: Please take 5 minutes to work on/ finish PBL BIOME MAP and PBL SCAVENGER HUNT! If you are finished with this, please take 5 minutes to write any last second questions about SCIENCE FAIR TONIGHT! :) Bell Ringer: February 6, 2013 Question: Based on what we have discussed in PBL on World Biomes, write down a name of a Biome and please describe 3 components of that Biome. (3 minutes) *ALSO DEFINE WHAT A BIOME IS Objective: Students (you) will be able to IDENTIFY and DISTINGUISH between Biomes using a graphic organizer along with CREATING a poem to further connect prior knowledge to concepts gained. Goals of the day based on the Objective: 3. Create a Poem to describe a certain Biome and the characteristics of that Biome.

What did you come up with?!? Possible Biomes: Tundra, Taiga, Temperate Deciduous Forest, Tropical Rain Forest, Grasslands and Desert. Tundra: extremely cold temperatures, frozen soil, little precipitation Taiga: not a lot of plant species, evergreens are thin, many wildfires occur Temperate Deciduous Forest: temperature varies depending on the season, many kinds of trees, shrubs, herbs, average yearly temperature is 10 degrees Celsius Tropical Rain Forest: average precipitation 50-250 inches a year, humidity ranges from 68 to 78 percent, many trees have straight trunks (don't branch out more than 100 feet away) Grasslands: many type of grasses and herbs, tall-grass and short grasslands, found in the middle latitudes BIOME: A large community of plants and animals that occupies a distinct region. Desert: not many plants, vegetation is very rare, small nocturnal carnivores Period 3 Goals of the day based on the Objective: KWL CHART 3. Create a Poem to describe a certain Biome and the characteristics of that Biome.

Period 1 KWL CHART WEBQUEST: You have a new summer job working for a travel agent. You have been hired to create brochures and posters that will persuade travelers to visit a specific geographical biome. In your groups, you will see that there is a notecard in the middle with a particular BIOME. In your groups today, you will need to be creative and DESIGN a brochure that would persuade travelers to come to your BIOME!! Once you are familiar with what you will be doing, brainstorm ways to accomplish your tasks. To brainstorm effectively, you should take on roles such as recorder, to write down all group members ideas; task master, to mediate and keep everyone on task; and a audio master, to be a good listener to make sure that all group members' ideas get recorded. YOU CAN DOUBLE UP ON A JOB:) Agree upon the best way to accomplish your task and make a quick plan. Each group member should make a list of the research and work he or she is responsible for. (15 minutes today to work) Who can repeat the directions for the brochure?!

Let's revisit our goals of the day! TEMPLATE: 3. Create a Poem to describe a certain Biome and the characteristics of that Biome. TEMPLATE: After completing half of the brochure, what goals have we met? 3. Create a Poem to describe a certain Biome and the characteristics of that Biome.

I-AM POEMS TROPICAL RAIN FOREST I am located (regions of the earth where the biome is found) You will recognize me by my (characteristics of the biome) Step inside me and you will feel (descriptive words about what you would experience in this biome) Look around and you will see (descriptive words about what you would see in this biome) Example: FIRST STANZA I am the Tropical Rain Forest. I am located in the tropical regions of the world, near the equator. You will recognize me by my warm temperatures, abundant rainfall, and wide range of biological diversity. Step inside me and you will feel enveloped by my warmth and humidity. Look around and you will see my lush green canopy, filled with brightly colored birds and animals of many kinds. I am the Tropical Rain Forest. Second Stanza Visit me in the summer and you will find (average temperatures and conditions) However, if you visit me in the winter you can expect (average temperatures and conditions) My climate is (describe climate, temperature and rainfall) Third Stanza I provide a home for (animals that you would find in the biome) But you would never find (2 animals that would NOT live in this biome) Listen closely and you will hear (descriptive words about what you would hear in this biome) I am known for my (vegetation you would find in the biome) Look closely and you will also see (insects native to the biome) Visit me in the summer but wear your shorts, because my average daytime temperature is 93 degrees and I only cool to 68 degrees at night. If you visit me in the winter, you can expect the same temperatures, because I am so close to the equator that my seasons do not vary. My climate is warm and wet, so don t forget your umbrella. I average 157 inches of rain each year, so it rains nearly every day. I am the Tropical Rain Forest.

Have we met our goals of the day? 3. Create a Poem to describe a certain Biome and the characteristics of that Biome.
