We give an expliit formula on the Ehrhart polynomial of a 3- dimensional simple integral onvex polytope by using tori geometry. 1. Introdution Let P R d be an integral onvex polytope of dimension d, that is, a onvex polytope whose verties have integer oordinates. For a non-negative integer l, we write lp = {lx x P}. Ehrhart [2] proved that the number of lattie points in lp an be expressed by a polynomial in l of degree d: lp Z d = d l d + d 1 l d 1 + +. This polynomial is alled the Ehrhart polynomial of P. It is known that: 1 = 1. 2 d 1 is half of the sum of relative volumes of faets of P [1, Theorem 5.6]. 3 d is the volume of P [1, Corollary 3.2]. However, we have no formula on other oeffiients of Ehrhart polynomials. In partiular, we do not know a formula on 1 for a general 3-dimensional integral onvex polytope. In this paper, we find an expliit formula on 1 of the Ehrhart polynomial of a 3-dimensional simple integral onvex polytope, see Theorem 5. Pommersheim [4] gave a method for omputing the d 2-nd oeffiient of the Ehrhart polynomial of a d-dimensional simple integral onvex polytope P by using tori geometry. He obtained an expliit desription of the Ehrhart polynomial of a tetrahedron by using this method. Our formula is obtained by using this method for a general 3-dimensional simple integral onvex polytope. The struture of the paper is as follows. In Setion 2, we state the main theorem and give a few examples. In Setion 3, we give a proof of the main theorem. Aknowledgment. This work was supported by Grant-in-Aid for JSPS Fellows 15J1. 2 YUSUKE SUYAMA volume of E, that is, the length of E measured with respet to the lattie of rank one in the line ontaining E. Definition 1. For eah edge E = F k1 F k2 of P, we define an integer me and a rational number se as follows: 1 We define me = Rv k1 +Rv k2 Z 3 /Zv k1 +Zv k2. 2 There exists a basis e 1,e 2 for Rv k1 +Rv k2 Z 3 suh that v k1 = e 1 and v k2 = pe 1 +qe 2 for some q > p. Then we define se = sp,q, where sp,q is the Dedekind sum, whih is defined by sp,q = q i=1 { i pi x [x] 1, x = 2 x / Z, q q x Z. Remark 2. We have q = me. Although p is not uniquely determined, sp,q does not depend on the hoie of e 1,e 2. Thus se is well-defined. Definition 3. For eah faet F of P, we define a rational number CF as follows. We name verties and faets around F as in Figure 1. We denote by v Z 3 the inward-pointing primitive normal vetor of F. Figure 1. verties and faets around F. For i = 1,...,r, we define ε i = detv,v ki+1,v ki >, a i = P i 1 Q i 1,v ki+1 ε i P i 1 Q i 1,v, b i = P i P i+1,v ki 1 ε i 1 P i P i+1,v ki,

Then we define CF = 2 i<j r a i b i+1 i+1 i+1 b i+2.... i+2...... i+2........ bj 2 j 2 j 2 b j 1 ε i ε i+1 ε j 1 VolP j 1 P j mp j 1 P j, where P j 1 P j is the edge whose endpoints are P j 1 and P j, and the determinants above are understood to be one when j = i+1. Remark 4. The proof of Theorem 5 below shows that CF does not depend on the hoie of F k1. The following is our main theorem: Theorem 5. Let P R 3 be a 3-dimensional simple integral onvex polytope, and let E 1,...,E m and F 1,...,F n be the edges and the faets of P, respetively. Let a,b, be positive integers with gda,b, = 1 and let P R 3 be the tetrahedron with verties O =, P 1 = a, P 2 = b k=1, P 3 = We put A = gdb,,b = gda,,c = gda,b and d = ABC. We define a one for eah fae F of P. Then the set σ F = {v R d u u,v u P, u F} P = {σ F F is a fae of P} of suh ones forms a fan in R d, whih is alled the normal fan of P. Let X P be the assoiated projetivetori variety. We denote by Vσ the subvariety of X P orresponding to σ P. Let Td i X P A i X P Q be the i-th Todd lass in the Chow group of i-yles with rational oeffiients. Theorem 8. Let P R d be a d-dimensional integral onvex polytope and lp Z d = d l d + d 1 l d 1 + + be its Ehrhart polynomial. If Td i X P has an expression of the form F r F[Vσ F ] with r F Q, then we have i = F r FVolF, where [Vσ F ] is the lass of Vσ F in the Chow group and VolF is the relative volume of F.
6 YUSUKE SUYAMA Now we assume that d = 3 and P is simple. Then the assoiated tori variety X P is Q-fatorialandweknowthe ringstrutureofthechowringa X P Q withrationaloeffiients. LetE 1,...,E m andf 1,...,F n betheedgesandthefaets of P, respetively. We have n 3.1 u,v k [Vσ Fk ] = u Q 3. k=1 If F k1 and F k2 are distint, then { 1 me 3.2 [Vσ Fk1 ][Vσ Fk2 ] = [Vσ j E j ] 1 j m : F k1 F k2 = E j, F k1 F k2 = in A X P Q. Pommersheim gave an expression of Td d 2 X P for a d-dimensional simple integral onvex polytope P R d. In the ase where d = 3, we have the following: Theorem 9 Pommersheim [4]. If P R 3 is a 3-dimensional simple integral onvex polytope, then m Td 1 X P = se j + 1 [Vσ Ej ]+ 1 n [Vσ Fk ] 2. 4 12 j=1 We use the notation in Definition 3. It suffies to show b i+1 i+1 [Vσ F ] 2 = i+1 b i+2... i+2. a i...... i+2 2 i<j r....... bj 2 j 2 j 2 b j 1 for eah faet F of P. We put Ds,t = k=1 b s s s b s+1... s+1....... s+1........ bt 1 t 1 t 1 b t ε i ε i+1 ε j 1 mp j 1 P j [Vσ P j 1P j ] for 2 < s t < r and Ds,t = 1 for s > t. Define u Q 3 by u,v = 1, u,v k1 =, u,v k2 =. By 3.1 and 3.2, we have r r [Vσ F ] 2 u,v kj = [Vσ F ] u,v kj [Vσ Fkj ] = mp j 1 P j [Vσ P j 1P j ]. Hene it suffies to show j=1 j 1 3.3 u,v kj = a i Di+1,j 1ε i ε i+1 ε j 1 for any j = 3,...,r. j=3
EHRHART POLYNOMIALS OF 3-DIMENSIONAL SIMPLE POLYTOPES 7 First we laim that 3.4 j 1 v k j 1 + j v kj+1 = a j v +b j v kj for any j = 2,...,r 1. By Cramer s rule, we have v kj+1 = detv k j+1,v kj,v kj 1 v + detv,v k j+1,v kj 1 detv,v kj,v kj 1 detv,v kj,v kj 1 v k j + detv,v k j,v kj+1 detv,v kj,v kj 1 v k j 1 So we have 3.5 = detv k j+1,v kj,v kj 1 ε j 1 j 1 v k j 1 + j v kj+1 v + detv,v k j+1,v kj 1 v kj ε j v kj 1. ε j 1 ε j 1 = j 1 ε 1 j detv kj+1,v kj,v kj 1 v + j 1 ε 1 j detv,v kj+1,v kj 1 v kj. Taking the inner produt of both sides of 3.5 with P j 1 Q j 1 gives j P j 1 Q j 1,v kj+1 = j 1 ε 1 j detv kj+1,v kj,v kj 1 P j 1 Q j 1,v, whih means a j = j 1 ε 1 j detv kj+1,v kj,v kj 1. Taking the inner produt of both sides of 3.5 with P j P j+1 gives j 1 P j P j+1,v kj 1 = j 1 ε 1 j detv,v kj+1,v kj 1 P j P j+1,v kj, whih means b j = j 1 ε 1 j detv,v kj+1,v kj 1. Thus 3.4 follows. We show 3.3 by indution on j. If j = 3, then both sides are a 2 ε 2. If j = 4, then both sides are a 2 b 3 ε 2 ε 3 + a 3 ε 3. Suppose 4 j r 1. By 3.4 and the hypothesis of indution, we have On the other hand, u,v kj+1 = u,a j ε j v +b j ε j v kj j 1 ε jv kj 1 = a j ε j +b j ε j u,v kj j 1 ε j u,v kj 1 j 1 = a j ε j +b j ε j a i Di+1,j 1ε i ε i+1 ε j 1 j 1 ε j 2 j a i Di+1,j 2ε i ε i+1 ε j 2. j a i Di+1,jε i ε i+1 ε j j 2 = a j ε j +a j 1 b j ε j 1 ε j + a i Di+1,jε i ε i+1 ε j.
8 YUSUKE SUYAMA Sine we have j 2 a i Di+1,jε i ε i+1 ε j j 2 = a i b j Di+1,j 1 ε 2 j 1 Di+1,j 2ε iε i+1 ε j j 2 = b j ε j a i Di+1,j 1ε i ε i+1 ε j 1 j 1 ε j 2 j a i Di+1,j 2ε i ε i+1 ε j 2, j a i Di+1,jε i ε i+1 ε j j 2 = a j ε j +a j 1 b j ε j 1 ε j +b j ε j a i Di+1,j 1ε i ε i+1 ε j 1 j 1 ε j 2 j a i Di+1,j 2ε i ε i+1 ε j 2 j 1 = a j ε j +b j ε j a i Di+1,j 1ε i ε i+1 ε j 1 j 1 ε j 2 j a i Di+1,j 2ε i ε i+1 ε j 2 = u,v kj+1. Thus 3.3 holds for j +1. This ompletes the proof of Theorem 5. Referenes [1] M. Bek and S. Robins: Computing the Continuous Disretely, Undergraduate Texts in Mathematis, Springer, 27. [2] E.
