QUIN by Harden Contract
TOMnewhouseIn the heartland, a designer seeks sustainability along, of course, with comfort and beauty. Over the years, he accumulates over 70 patents and dozens of awards. He creates exciting, ergonomic, environmentally friendly furniture. And he is ever more drawn to one of the most beautiful and renewable materials of all: solid North American hardwood. In the Harden ancestral forest, hardwood grows abundantly, strong and tall. Harvested sparingly, replenished three for one, it is one of the planet s most beautiful and sustainable materials. It can be sculpted dramatically and withstands centuries of wear. It glows from within, recalling the sun that made it. This is the medium Tom Newhouse used to create the Quin Collection for Harden Contract: black cherry and maple case goods that actually grow, like the trees they re made from.
Details like corner dovetails and beckoning curves display the unique gifts of hardwood T h e Q u i n t r a n s a c t i o n a l d e s k in this warm reception station. Fashioned of a 27"-high L-desk with transaction counter, it provides pure comfort for its 5'2" occupant. And the desk height can actually change. Quin, named for the Latin word for five, adjusts up to five inches in height: a promising feature as the workforce becomes more diverse in stature. QUINviting
QUINdividual Four people of very different heights could feel at home in these four curvaceous workstations, with desktops that can be set as high as 31". A sculptural rhythm banishes the boxy feeling of conventional case goods. Deep body pockets and forearm-friendly edges provide comfort all day. T h e Q u i n L - d e s k i n o p e n p l a n
Hardwood shines as a medium and as a canvas. Not only does it allow unique shapes and details, it acts as a gracious frame for adornments like Quin s elegant, elliptical maple grommet.
At a Quin L-desk with T h e Q u i n P- t o p d e s k w i t h a s y m e t r i c a l h u t c h P-top, as many as four have space for laptops, coffee, papers and knees. Like all Quin desktops, this one has an inward curve for its main user. (At 6'1", he sits at a 29" desk.) All work edges are rounded. An asymmetrical hutch, worktools on rails and a file pedestal provide more-than-sufficient storage for this conference-geared office. QUINteractive
QUINdustrious For those who communicate mostly through phone and computer CPAs and attorneys, for instance a U-shape desk with symmetrical hutch provides plenty of work surface and ample storage. Again, inward curves enhance comfort. The flipper door on the hutch closes softly with pneumatic assist. This desktop is set at 31" for its 6'5" V.P. Robust curves define the Quin hutch structure. Leather upholstery hugs and accentuates the curves of the solid wood doors. Details such as these are created only by master furniture craftsmen. The pulls, designed uniquely for Quin, are standard in brushed nickel. Maple pulls are also available.
All edges are curved, as T h e Q u i n t a b l e d e s k o f f i c e is the modesty panel on the 27"-high table desk of the 5'4" CEO. She and five or six guests can confer in comfort around this elegant surface, with its two ellipse grommets joined by a carved pencil groove. (A leather writing insert is optional.) Behind, a work wall includes two tall bookcases, a kneehole credenza and symmetrical hutch. QUINfluential
