LITTLE QUACK By Lauren Thompson, pictures by Derek Anderson Ages: 2-10 Themes: Families, Growth and Change, Risk-Taking, Independence Total playing time: Approximately 20 minutes SUMMARY Splish! Splash! Splosh! Little Quack is a duck out of water. Can he find the courage to join his brothers and sisters in the pond? Count along with the Quack-u-lator and find out! OBJECTIVES Students will make ASL - image - text connections. Students will learn the value of independence and risk taking. Students will expand their ASL vocabulary by 20 new signs. BEFORE VIEWING DISCUSSION Is it OK to be afraid of the water? Should you jump in the water if you are afraid? Is it easier to follow someone after they show the way? Do you like to lead or follow? AFTER VIEWING ACTIVITIES Story Retention: Step through the 10-question quiz independently or in a group gaining consensus on the right answers. Have young readers describe their favorite scenes on the video and include 1 or more signs from that scene in their explanation. Was Little Quack scared at the beginning of the story? Why did Little Quack jump in the pond? How did Little Quack feel at the end of the story? Have young readers review and practice the ASL vocabulary. Activity Guide Ask the students what additional signs they learned while watching the story. Sit in a circle and have each student demonstrate a sign. Ask the other students to copy and guess what sign it is. Spelling Practice: Simultaneously voice and sign various words from the story or vocabulary list while the students spell the signed word. Life experience: Have you ever followed your friends or family? Have you ever swum in a pond? Were you scared to jump in the pond? Is it OK to do something if you are scared?
