Many times we read in Scripture that Jesus saw the crowds and had compassion on the sick, the lame and the dying. His compassion yielded His touch, and multitudes were healed. Jesus replied to John the Baptist s inquiry about His role as the Messiah with these words: Go and report to John the things you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news preached to them (Luke 7:22). Jesus was all about restoring life! Our final story in this unit is taken from Luke 17:11-19. Again, Jesus encountered a group of men who needed His divine touch. They had a disease called leprosy. Leprosy is a term that describes a variety of neurological disorders. For the Hebrews, leprosy was bad because there was no cure. The disease was usually terminal, but death would be slow because the skin literally rotted away. People with the disease were banned from family and friends. They often lived in separate communities suffering their affliction and begging for food and basic needs. Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem to face His own judgment and crucifixion. Yet putting these thoughts aside, He stopped to heal these 10 lepers. As was the custom, they knew to stand at a distance. They shouted to Jesus, Have mercy on us (Luke 17:13). Jesus simply told them to go show themselves to the priest. The priest would verify their healing so they would be allowed to return to their families. One man, seeing he had been healed, turned around and returned to Jesus. He fell to his knees and offered his gratitude. Jesus accepted his thanks, but asked about the others. The one man was a Samaritan, a foreigner. He truly realized what had happened. This was more than just a gift of healing. The passage seems to indicate the man had a faith that made him truly whole. How often do we pray earnestly for something, and when our prayers are answered we neglect to offer gratitude that matches our petitioning? God inhabits the praise of His people. Let us not walk away and forget the Giver of all good and perfect gifts. Lesson Plan Arrival Greet children at eye level and express how happy you are to see them. Be sure each child has a name tag and the security measures of your church are followed. Label all coats and personal belongings. Strongly encourage children who have brought items from home, such as toys and books, to place them on a shelf while they are working with other materials. Assure children their items will be safe and they can take them home at the end of the session. Help each child make a choice where he or she would like to begin his or her Center Time. Listen to hear how Jesus helped 10 people who had a terrible disease. Bible Story Jesus Healed 10 Lepers (Luke 17:11-19) A long time ago, there were 10 people who lived in a small town near Jerusalem. They had a disease called leprosy. This disease caused terrible sores all over their bodies. They could not stay with their families or be with their friends because they might spread the disease to them. They were very lonely and sad. The disease made them sick and sore. One day, Jesus was traveling to Jerusalem. He came to the small town where the 10 lepers lived. They saw Jesus. They did not get close to Jesus, but they called out to Him and said, Master, please heal us! When Jesus saw them, He told them, Go and show yourselves to the priest. Jesus knew the priest would have to see they were healed before they could go to their families. As the people walked away, their skin no longer had the awful sores. Jesus had healed them of this terrible disease. One man, realizing he no longer had the disease, turned around and came back to Jesus. He fell down on his knees and thanked God that Jesus had healed him. Jesus was glad the man had returned to give thanks, but He asked, Where are the other nine? Jesus wanted all those he healed to give thanks to God for being made well. Talk Time 1. Show the teaching picture for today s Bible story. Ask the following: How many people met Jesus as He entered the city? What was wrong with them? What did Jesus ask them to do? How many came back to thank Jesus? 2. Read the Bible Phrase on the teaching picture. Say the phrase together. Comment that one way Jesus helps people is through healing. Explain to children God often uses doctors and nurses to help people get well. Sometimes God heals someone through a miracle. 3. Close the Bible Story Time by inviting children to join you in prayer. Perhaps a child knows a family member who is ill. Allow any interested preschooler to pray. Conclude prayer time by thanking God for sending Jesus to help people become well. 4.
