Theme Verse Enhancements PURPOSE This addition to the program kit is to give you ideas for exploring the theme of the year, designed and created by Advent Christian ladies from the Southern Region. Enjoy the monthly programs designed to explore these concepts, but consider planning special events as well. MUSIC There are several hymns that celebrate the body of Christ. Most of those in Hymns of Heritage & Hope are found within numbers 418 433, but a few are elsewhere, including: Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken #19, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence #128, and Like the Murmur of the Dove s Song #304. Another often used as a hymn of personal dedication that could be altered for a group meaning is Take My Life And Let It Be #620, if all the my s were changed to our and the me to us. Silly children s songs that have nothing to do with spiritual matters but do teach body parts might be fun to sing, such as Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes or Hokey Pokey. Similarly, but slightly more spiritual, If You re Happy and You Know It has many verses related to body parts. Along the same lines, Father Abraham can be a lot of fun. If your group has a time when it works with kids, these would be wonderful to share. An appropriate children s song with music from Moravian Book of Worship (1995, p. 683) is Hilda Margaret Dodd s Hands to Work and Feet to Run. The lyrics are as follows: Hands to work and feet to run, God s good gifts to me and you; Hands and feet He gave to us to help each other the whole day through. Eyes to see and ears to hear, God s good gifts to me and you; Eyes and ears He gave to us to help each other the whole day through. Minds to think and hearts to love, God s good gifts to me and you; Minds and hearts He gave to us to help each other the whole day through. SCRIPTURE The theme scripture for the year is Romans 12:4 5, and we recommend that you share it at each meeting in one of the following recommended translations or paraphrases. Perhaps you can challenge your ladies to memorize the verse in a different translation each month. Additional scripture on the subject of the believing body that could be used are: Hebrews 11:1 39; Romans 12:2; John 8:12; 1 Peter 1:7; James 1:2 4, 12. Hymns of Heritage & Hope has a wonderful reading, Gifts of the Spirit #299, based on 1 Corinthians 12:27 31a. 53
Translation Text of Romans 12:4-5 Amplified Bible For just as in one [physical] body we have many parts, and these parts do not all have the same function or special use, so we, who are many, are [nevertheless just] one body in Christ, and individually [we are] parts one of another [mutually dependent on each other]. Contemporary English Version A body is made up of many parts, and each of them has its own use. That s how it is with us. There are many of us, but we each are part of the body of Christ, as well as part of one another. Easy-to-Read Version Each one of us has one body, and that body has many parts. These parts don t all do the same thing. In the same way, we are many people, but in Christ we are all one body. We are the parts of that body, and each part belongs to all the others. Holman Christian Standard Bible Now as we have many parts in one body, and all the parts do not have the same function, in the same way we who are many are one body in Christ and individually members of one another. J.B. Phillips New Testament As your spiritual teacher I give this piece of advice to each one of you. Don t cherish exaggerated ideas of yourself or your importance, but try to have a sane estimate of your capabilities by the light of the faith that God has given to you all. For just as you have many members in one physical body and those members differ in their functions, so we, though many in number, compose one body in Christ and are all members of one another. Through the grace of God we have different gifts. If our gift is preaching, let us preach to the limit of our vision. If it is serving others let us concentrate on our service; if it is teaching let us give all we have to our teaching; and if our gift be the stimulating of the faith of others let us set ourselves to it. Let the man who is called to give, give freely; let the man who wields authority think of his responsibility; and let the man who feels sympathy for his fellows act cheerfully. Living Bible Just as there are many parts to our bodies, so it is with Christ s body. We are all parts of it, and it takes every one of us to make it complete, for we each have different work to do. So we belong to each other, and each needs all the others. New American Standard Bible For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. New International Reader s Each of us has one body with many parts. And the parts do not all have Version the same purpose. So also we are many persons. But in Christ we are one body. And each part of the body belongs to all the other parts. New King James Version For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. New Living Translation Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. The Message In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we re talking about is Christ s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. Worldwide English In a body there are many parts, but all the parts do not do the same thing. In the same way, we are many people. But we are one body because we are all joined together in Christ. Each one of us is a part of all the others. 54
MORE FUN GER AS A BODY Just about anything you choose to do together as a group fits in this category, but some specific ideas include: PLAY GAMES with each other, or with the kids you plan to sing with; playing games is always fun. o Operation is a classic game focusing on the body. o Twister and, a new one like it, Body Party are always a challenge. o If you are really adventurous, Body Doodles is a drawing game which invites players to make temporary tattoos on fellow players. PAPER FUN o PUZZLES For pen-and-paper fun, a word search puzzle is included, but this one is not designed to help you focus on and learn this year s theme verses. There is an odd story behind why THIS PUZZLE IS NOT MADE WITH ME VERSE. It is made with Ephesians 4:15 16, which is what I recommended to the Program Kit Committee for the theme verses, but we decided as a group to go with the Romans 12:4 5. However, I forgot to change my files, so I made the puzzle with the wrong verse. Use this whenever and however suits your group. If you have liked the other puzzles provided in years past, you can create your own. DiscoveryEducation.com s Puzzlemaker allows creation of both DOUBLE PUZZLE and CRYPQUOTE and ArmoredPenguin.com can help you create a WORD SCRAMBLE. o ChristianBook.com has a puzzle book, The Outrageous Human Body Activity Book by George Toufexis. o COLORG, especially for adults, is increasingly popular. ChristianBook.com has quite a variety of anatomy coloring books. SHOPPG FOR DECORATION OR TESTIMONY There are not many commercial products available online imprinted with our theme verses, but here are a couple: o Zazzle.com has a Many Parts But One Body card. o Etsy.com features a bracelet engraved with the verse at MissMaisiesWeeShop. MAKE THGS Make them yourself to hand out OR as a group activity. o Magnets: Print the verse on cards. Laminate cards and glue a magnet to the back.(if you don t have access to laminating, you could also buy the photo holder magnets and print cards to go in them.) o Cross stitch, embroidery, plastic canvas or quilted items such as samplers, pillows, or wall hangings o Jewelry, plaques, stationery, chimes or garden stones However you choose to work together as, I look forward to hearing how this kit blesses you. Word Search Answer Key 2018 Memory Verse: Ephesians 4:15-16 (J.B. Phillips New Testament) We are meant to hold firmly to the truth in love, and to grow up in every way into Christ, the head. For it is from the head that the whole body, as a harmonious structure knit together by the joints with which it is provided, grows by the proper functioning of individual parts to its full maturity in love.
