Chapter 8 Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 8.1 INTRODUCTION This Chapter deals with Yogas of 4 categories of subjects, because they are distinctly different from the general Yogas dealt with earlier in Naturally Bad and Naturally Good Planets. These 4 categories are: (1) Kendradhipatya Dosha of Jupiter and Venus, because their role is important in determining longevity; (2) Yogas of Lords of 2 nd, 8 th, 11 th and 12 th Houses: Lord of 2 nd House has mixed qualities of Lagna and 3 rd House, and the results are mixed. Lords of 11 th and 12 th Houses are not independent; they only enhance good, bad of second lordship of Planets. (3) Ashtamdhipatya of Mercury and Moon: When Mercury has two lordships, it becomes totally bad. Moon has only the varying ashtamadhipatya due to change of size and cresant depending on tithi; and (4) Kendra-Kona Strengths of Mars: Mars is the Lord of Kendra and Kona Houses in Cancer Lagna and of bad Houses in Aquarius Lagna. Hence, there is a difference in giving Yogas as per the position. In view of the varying influences by the above groups of Planets, this subject is dealt with separately in this Chapter. 8.2 KENDRADHIPATYA DOSHA Chapter 7 presents (i) general principles of Kendradhipatya Dosha, (ii) guidelines for good and bad Yogas related to Naturally Good and Bad Planets, (iii) how a natural quality of a Planet changes by virtue of Kendradhipatya, and how this changed quality, in turn, changes by virtue of its position and conjunction with other Planets, and (iv) various Yogas relating to Naturally Good Planets (namely Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Moon). This Chapter deals with specialities of Kendradhipatya Dosha, in which (a) Naturally Good Planets with Kendradhipatya Dosha positioned in bad houses give greater and better Yoga, than Naturally Good Planets when they are Lords of bad houses and positioned in Kendra positions; and (b) Naturally Bad Planets with Kendradhipatya Dosha are Lords of Kona positions and remain in bad houses give greater and better Yoga, than Naturally Bad Planets when they are Lords of bad houses and positioned in Kona positions.

Jataka Mani Manjusha Also, this Chapter emphasises how Kendradhipatya Dosha of Jupiter and Venus affects the Longevity of a person considering Ayur Yogas, Maraka Planets and Maraka positions. General guidelines are discussed to arrive at Maraka of a person. 8.2.1 Specialities in Kendradhipatya Dosha of Naturally Good Planets Kendradhipatya Dosha of Naturally Good Planets are discussed in this section for reasons presented in Table 8.1. Only Jupiter and Venus, which are Naturally Good Planets, having shubhatwa values of 1.0 and 0.75 become bad due to Kendradhipatya Dosha and changes in bad quality, to paapatwa values of 1.0 and 0.75, respectively. When two planets fully change their natural good quality to bad quality, the changed character plays important role in determining Longevity, Markalakshana and Maraka stithi. Longevity (namely Baalarishta, Alpa, Madhya, Poorna and Deergha Ayur Yogas) can be arrived based on rules laid down in Chapter 4. The most powerful planet for Maraka Planet, as per Section 4.9.1, is the Lord of Lagna, Ashtama or Trutiya positions. With regard to Maraka positions, in addition to the above three positions, Houses 2, 7 and 12 also play important role. Table 8.1: Reasons for discussing Kendradhipatya Dosha of Naturally Good Planets S.No. Planet Quality of Planet Remarks Natural Quality Quality with Lordship of Kendra Houses 1 Jupiter Fully Good Fully Bad Paapatwa increases with gradation 2 Venus ¾ Good ¾ Bad 3 Mercury ½ Good ½ Bad Mercury s quality changes further when it is in conjunction with a Naturally Bad Planet; it becomes fully bad 4 Moon Fully Good ½ Bad Moon changes its natural quality depending on crescent of Moon and varies from good to half bad Lagnas are presented in Table 8.2, where Jupiter and Venus will attain maximum paapatwa to cause Kendradhipatya Dosha. Table 8.2 shows that Jupiter and Mercury have two Kendradhipatya Doshas in four Lagnas, namely Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces; in these Lagnas, Jupiter and Mercury have maximum Kendradhipatya Doshas. Venus has Kendradhipatya Dosha in 8 other Lagnas maximum dosha is in Leo and Capricorn Lagnas (i.e., Lordship of 10 th House), lesser dosha in Aries and Scorpio Lagnas (i.e., Lordship of 7 th House), even lesser dosha in Cancer and Aquarius Lagnas (i.e., Lordship of 4 th House), and least lagna kendra dosha in Taurus and Libra Lagnas (i.e., Lordship of 1 st House). Moon has maximum Kendradhipatya Dosha in Libra Lagna (i.e., Lordship of 10 th House), lesser dosha in 358

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 Capricorn Lagna (i.e., Lordship of 7 th House), even lesser dosha in Aries Lagna (i.e., Lordship of 4 th House), and least lagna kendra dosha in Cancer Lagna (i.e., Lordship of 1 st House). Further, this dosha changes with Moon s crescent from Bahula Ashtami to Shukla Shashti, to lesser dosha. Table 8.2: Naturally Good Planets and Lordships resulting in Kendradhipatya Dosha S.No. Lagna Lordships Kendradhipatya Houses Jupiter Venus Mercury Moon Jupiter Venus Mercury Moon 1 Aries 9, 12 2, 7 3, 6 4 7 4 2 Taurus 8, 11 1, 6 2, 5 3 1 3 Gemini 7, 10 5, 12 1, 4 2 7, 10 1, 4 4 Cancer 6, 9 4, 11 3, 12 1 4 1 5 Leo 5, 8 3, 10 2, 11 12 10 6 Virgo 4, 7 2, 9 1, 10 11 4, 7 1, 10 7 Libra 3, 6 1, 8 9, 12 10 1 10 8 Scorpio 2, 5 7, 12 8, 11 9 7 9 Sagittarius 1, 4 6, 9 7, 10 8 1, 4 7, 10 10 Capricorn 3, 12 5, 10 6, 9 7 10 7 11 Aquarius 2, 11 4, 9 5, 8 6 4 12 Pisces 1, 10 3, 8 4, 7 5 1, 10 4, 7 In view of the above, Kendradhipatya Dosha is maximum of Jupiter, Mercury and Venus, attributing Maraka to some persons as discussed below. Of these two conditions in Table 8.3, it is important to judge, which is more powerful. Experience shows that Naturally Good Planets (having Kendradhipatya and positioned in 3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses) give greater and better Yoga than when Naturally Good Planets are Lords of bad houses (3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses) and remain in Kendra positions, i.e., Yoga in Item (1) in Table 8.3 is greater than that in Item (2) in Table 8.3. Table 8.3: Combinations of Naturally Good Planets and their Yogas 1 Naturally Good Planets having Kendradhipatya give good Yoga, bad Houses (3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses). 2 Naturally Good Planets having Lordship of 3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses give Yoga, Kendra positions (1 st, 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses). 359

Jataka Mani Manjusha Similarly, Planets (like Naturally Bad Planet) having Konadhipatya Dosha (Lordship of 5 th and 9 th Houses) and in Paapasthanas (3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses), give greater and better Yoga than when Naturally Bad Planets become Lords of Paapasthanas (3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses) and remain in Konas positions (5 th and 9 th Houses). Similarly, When Naturally Bad Planets having Kendradhipatya (Lordship of 1 st, 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses) and remain in Kendra positions (1 st, 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses), give greater and better Yoga than when Naturally Bad Planets become Lords of Paapsthanam (3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses) and remain in Konas positions (5 th and 9 th Houses). 8.2.2 Kendradhipatya Dosha of Jupiter and Venus Sloka: Kendradhipatya Doshasthu balavan Guru Sukra yoho Marakathvepi cha thayor maraka sthana Samsthithih Two points arise from this Sloka. First, Jupiter and Venus are powerful in giving Avayoga, when they are Lords of Kendra positions (1 st, 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses). Second, when Jupiter and Venus are in Marakasthanas, they are equally powerfull for Marakam. There is no dispute on the first point, but there is lack of clarity on the second. These planets do not have Maraka Lakshana by merely having Kendradhipatya, but can have Maraka Lakshana by being in Marakasthanas (2 nd, 7 th and 12 th Houses) with Kendradhipatya. Thus, both Jupiter and Venus must have Kendradhipatya as well as Maraka Sthiti to be more powerfull for Marakam. Naturally Bad Planets (Sun, Mars and Saturn) with Konadhipathya will be powerful for Marakam when they are in Maraka Sthanas. But, a Planet will not cause death by simply having Maraka Lakshana; here, longevity has to be considered first. This should be given paramount importance by an Astrologer when considering Marakam. First, the Longevity should be categoried into five levels, namely (i) Alpa, (ii) Madhyma, (iii) Poorna, (iv) Deergha, and (v) Vipareeta, according to relative influences of various Planets in the horoscope. Second, in whichever category this longevity falls, the Maraka should be deceided by the periods of such of those Planets which have Maraka Lakshanas. In all other categories of Maraka Lakshanas as well, readings should be taken, as mentioned in Section 8.2.2(a). Similarly, for judging when one will have children, the general aspect of the horoscope also should take into consideration. But, it is not true that one will have children necessarily simply because the Santanakaraka and Adhipati are in their dasas. Again, the general aspect of the Horoscope should be considered and not just one 360

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 aspect. Hence, Maraka Nirnaya should not be taken before considering the longevity of the person (except under Baalarishta) as per Table 8.4. After deciding the level of longevity, as per Ayur Yogas given in Section 4.9.2, the Maraka Planets and the most powerful among them (and their Dasa and in Antardasa) will determine the Maraka. Table 8.4: Age profile of persons in different levels of longevity S.No. Name of Longevity Level Age range 1 Alpa 30-32 years 2 Madhyama 33-62 years 3 Poorna 63-82 years 4 Deergha 83-120 years 5 Vipareetha 120 years and above (a) Maraka Planets There are five types of Maraka Planets (Planets having Maraka Lakshanas), namely (1) By reason of the Planets being Lords of Marakasthanas and their position in Marakasthanas; (2) By virtue of the Aadhipatya of the Planets having Maraka Lakshanas, and at the same time not being in Marakasthanas; (3) Having no Marakasthana by Lordship, but by remaining in Marakasthanas; (4) Naturally Good Planets having Kendradhipatya with Kendrasthiti or Marakasthana sthiti; and (5) Naturally Bad Planets having Konadhipatya and also remaining in Marakasthanas. Of the above five types, one is weaker than the other. The order of descending strength is as given above, i.e., from type (1) to type (5) above. (b) Marakasthanas In Marakasthanas also, there is a gradation by Uttarotara, given by the following three categories: (1) (a) Lagna, Astama and Trutiyadhipatis, (b) Naturally Good Planets with Kendradhipatya, and (c) Naturally Bad Planets with Konadhipatya; (2) Lord of 2 nd, 7 th and 12 th Houses; (3) Lord of 6 th and 11 th Houses; With regard to Maraka, when the Planets have the above Lordship, they have different powers. Conditions in (1) above are more powerful than those in (2) above, which in turn are more powerful than conditions (3) above. Among the conditions 361

Jataka Mani Manjusha in (1) above, condition 1(a) is more powerful than conditions 1(b), which in turn are more powerful than conditions 1(c). In matters of Maraka, Planets having the above Lordships are less powerful in descending order. After determining the Longevity, in accordance with the categories of longevity given above, the Maraka takes place in combinations (1) and (2) above of the Maraka Planets. If the above Planet Dasas are not present, the periods of the planets give in combination (3) above also will be effective. In deciding which of these combination govern, there is another important factor, namely the extent of longevity within each of the levels of longevity. (i) If longevity is Alpa, whether it is Madhyama or Poorna within Alpa. (ii) If longevity is Madhyama, whether it is Alpa, Madhyama or Poorna in Madhyama. (iii) If longevity is Poorna, whether it is Alpa, Madhyama or Poorna within Poorna. Which of these governs, should be determined by experience. Here, there is an opinion that 2 nd and 7 th Houses alone are powerfull Marakasthanas. Of the two houses, 2 nd House is more powerful than 7 th House. This is not correct. Consider the sloka below to resolve this: Sloka: Ashatamam Ayusahastananam Ashtama Dashtamam Cha Thathu According to this Sloka, 3 rd and 8 th Houses are Ayusthanas. Therefore, Lagna also is an Ayushthana. 12 th, 2 nd and 7 th Houses become Marakasthanas, respectively, because 12 th House is Marakasthana for the above. There is no reason to have two opinions, Ashtamam Nidhanam Randhram Thus, it is the opinion of sages that the Ashtama is Ayusthana, at the same time Marakasthana. On this account; Lagna, Truteeya and Ashtama will become more powerful Marakas. According to this, the ascending order is 2 nd, 7 th and 12 th Houses. 8.3 YOGAS OF LORDS OF 2 ND, 8 TH, 11 TH AND 12 TH HOUSES As mentioned before, Naturally Good Planets with kendradhipatya acquire paapatwa and by virtue of their positions in Kendra and Kona give bad Yoga, and in Paapasthanas give Yoga. Similarly, Naturally Good Planets with konadhipatya acquire paapatwa and by virtue of their positions in Kendra and Kona give bad Yoga, and in Paapasthanas give Yoga. Based on the above rules, the Kendra Houses (1 st, 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses), Kona Houses (5 th and 9 th Houses) and Paapastanas (3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses) are dealt with in this section. Also, Yogas given by Naturally Good and Bad Planets are detailed in Chapter 7 in all 12 Lagnas. 362

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 2 nd and 11 th Houses are Mixed Houses, because 2 nd House aquires partly the good qualities of 1 st House and partly bad qualities of 3 rd House. Hence, 3 rd House gives mixed results. Similarly, the 11 th House falls between 10 th Kendra positions, a benefic house (Rajyasthana) and the 12 th Paapasthana, a malefic house (Vyayasthana). Therefore, the 11 th House acquires partly the qualities of both 10 th and 12 th Houses. 6 th House, a bad house, falls between 5 th and 7 th Kendra positions. It acquires special significance as it is between two benefic houses. 8 th House plays important part in any horoscope as Yogas of Planets having Lordship of 1 st and 8 th houses differs from the Yogas given by Planets of Lordships of 1 st and 6 th Houses. In the former, Planets acquire Kendradhipatya in the former and Konadhipatya in the latter. Depending on whether the Planet is Naturally Good or Naturally Bad, it becomes bad or good, respectively. These Yogas are also discussed in this section. 8.3.1 Strengths of Lords of 2 ND and 12 TH Houses The strengths of Lords of 2 nd and 12 th Houses are discussed separately here, because these Planets do not have individuality in giving Yogas and those Yogas are determined by their combination with other Planets and their positions. Also, Lords of 2 nd and 12 th Houses are equal in not being independent, but at the same time, they vary in their strengths. Even for this reason, Lords of 2 nd and 12 th Houses are discussed separately here. Lords of 11 th and 12 th houses are equal in force. Lord of 11 th House is not indepandant, has no force of its own, and cannot give Yoga individually, but influences those associated with it. Therefore, the 11 th House is studied along with 2 nd and 12 th Houses. The Yogas related to Lords of 2 nd, 11 th and 12 th Houses are dealt with together in this section. Yogas of Lords of 8 th House are examined separately. Sloka: Lagnaadwaya dwitheeye sau paresham saaha charyathaha Sthanantharaanugnuyena Bhavathaha Phaladayakau When Lords of 2 nd and 12 th Houses are in combination with other Planets, they give results according to the positions of those other Planets. Because these Planets do not have individuality, their Yogas is determined by their combination with other Planets and their positions, just like shadow planets. This is contrary to Kalidasa and others. In literature [Ramamurthy, 1992], the 2 nd House is taken as a mixed Rasi; this means Lord of the 2 nd House gives mixed results, i.e., some of the results are as for Lord of 1 st House and others as for Lord of 3 rd House. 363

Jataka Mani Manjusha So, it is better to say that the Lords of the 11 th and 12 th Houses have no individuality, instead of saying that the Lords of 2 nd and 12 th Houses have no individuality. This is found to be true in practice, and accepted by Maharshis. When these two Planets of 2 nd and 12 th Houses have another Aadhipatya, the good and bad results of the other Aadhipatya are enhanced and confirmed. For this reason, Maharshis said that Mercury (Lord of 9 th and 12 th Houses in Libra Lagna) has no Vyaadhipatya Dosha. Similarly, Jupiter (Lord of 9 th and 12 th House in Aries Lagna) has no Vyaadhipatya Dosha, and Venus (Lord of 5 th and 12 th House in Gemini Lagna) has no Vyaadhipatya Dosha. On the same principle, Saturn (Lord of 10 th and 11 th Houses in Aries Lagna) gives good Yoga, even in the 11 th House, but Yoga will be less in 11 th House than in the 10 th House. In the same way, Mars (Lord of 6 th and 11 th Houses in Gemini Lagna) combination with Kendradhipatis gives good Yoga, when positioned in the 11 th House. Similarly, Mars (Lord of 4 th and 11 th House in Capricorn Lagna) gives good Yoga when positioned in in Kendras and Kona positions (1 st, 4 th, 7 th, 10 th, 5 th and 9 th Houses). When it is said that the 2 nd House is a mixed raasi, it is not that it is not independent, just like Labhadhipati and Vyayadhipati. Mixed Raasee means that it gives a combination of qualities of both the 1 st and 3 rd Houses, and hence the person has both the qualities. Besides its own qualities, the Mixed Rasee will acquire qualities of both the 1 st and the 3 rd Houses, when determining Yogas. These are to be considered when determining the Yoga or Avayoga. 8.3.2 Yogas of Naturally Bad Planets For Naturally Bad Planets, Kendradhipatya is good. Kendradhipatya is bad for Naturally Good Planets. Here, Lagna is regarded as Kendra, though sometimes, it is taken as Kona; but, this is not considered in this section. Yogas applicable to Aries, Libra and Capricorn Lagnas are not true to Pisces and Virgo Lagnas. Yogas offered by Naturally Bad Planets in different Lagnas is described below. 364

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 (a) Aries Lagna Venus is Lord of 2 nd and 7 th Houses, so it acquires Kendra Dosha of the 1 st House, which enhances its Kendra Dosha, because of being the Lord of the 7 th House. One has to deceide this Kendra Dosha, just like Mercury and Jupiter, which have double Kendradhipatya. Venus gives very bad Yoga when in 7 th House, and not much Yoga in 2 nd House (as it posseses Kendra Dosha); so, Venus in 2 nd House is as good as remaining in Lagna. Venus having Kendra Dosha gives maximum bad Yoga when in Kendra positions (1 st, 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses). The Avayoga of Venus in Aries Lagna can be compared to good Yoga of Mars in Libra Lagna. But, Naturally Bad Planets give good Yoga in 2 nd House, because Kendra Dosha is considered to be good for them. Saturn gives Yoga in the 2 nd House as well as in all other Kendra positions (1 st, 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses). (b) Libra Lagna Mars is a fully good planet (by being Lord of 2 nd and 7 th Houses). Mars gives good Yoga when in the 1 st, 7 th and 10 th Houses (in descending order of gradation), no Yoga, when in 4 th House (as Mars is in exaltation), and good Yoga, when in 2 nd House. Mars (by being Lord of Kendra) gives maximum Yoga in Kendra positions, except in Makaram Kendra, i.e., 4 th House. (c) Virgo Lagna Venus is the Lord of 2 nd and 9 th House, and hence acquires the qualities of Lagnadhipatya (by being Lord of 2 nd House). Also, it has Kendra Dosha (qualities of 1 st House) and at the same time Konadhipatya Subha by virtue being Lord of the 9 th House. Thus, Venus retains Konadhipatya Subham only. Therefore, it gives good Yoga when in the 2 nd House and not much good Yoga when in 9 th House. Venus in combination with Saturn and Mars in the 9 th House gives bad Yoga. (d) Capricorn Lagna Saturn is Lord of 1 st and 2 nd Houses; it gives Yoga in 2 nd House, as well as in all other Kendra positions, namely 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses. (e) Pisces Lagna Mars is Lord of 2 nd and 9 th House. When it is in 5 th and 9 th Houses, it gives bad Yoga, than when in 2 nd House. (f) Taurus Lagna Mercury is Lord of 2 nd and 5 th House, and retains Panchamadhipatya Subha only. It gives very good Yoga when in 2 nd and 5 th Houses. 365

Jataka Mani Manjusha (g) Scorpio Lagna Jupiter is Lord of 2 nd and 5 th Houses, and retains Panchamadhipatya Subha only. It gives very good Yoga when in 2 nd and 5 th Houses. Because Sun and Moon have Lordship of only one house, it is easy to determine their strength. Their Yoga or Avayoga should be judged from their positions and combination with other Planets, because they do not have Lordship of two houses. (h) Cancer Lagna Sun is Lord of 2 nd House, and retains Kendradhipatya Subha (and Lagnahipatya Subha). It gives very good Yoga by virtue of its position in Kendra positions and of its combination with Kendradhipatis. It has qualities of the 3 rd House also, because of being Lord of 2 nd House. Therefore, Sun gives bad Yoga when alone in bad houses (3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses) or when in combination with Lords of bad houses. Lagna. (i) Gemini Lagna Moon is Lord of 2 nd House, and a similar discussion is valid as in Cancer (j) Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius Lagnas The following discussion holds. In Leo and Aquarius Lagnas, Mercury and Jupiter are Lords of the 2 nd and 11 th Houses, respectively. In these two cases, 11 th House is not an independant force and cannot individually give Yoga, but influences those associated with it. This is accepted by all Maharishis. The resultant effects are mixed Yogas, which are inherent of the 2 nd House. Therefore, Mercury and Jupiter give mixed Yoga only. Their combination with Lords of Kendra and Kona positions, and in Kendra and Konas positions not only give individual good Yogas, but also influence their associates to give good Yoga. When they are in the 2 nd House without combining with other Planets, they give mixed Yogas only. When Mercury and Jupiter are combined with Naturally Good Planets having Kendradhipatya Dosha, their Yoga will be reduced to some extent. This applies to Naturally Bad Planets with Konadhipatya Dosha. When Mercury and Jupiter are associated with Naturally Bad Planets having Kendradhipatya Subha, their Subha will be reduced to some extent. When Mercury and Jupiter are associated with Naturally Good Planets with Lords of bad Houses (3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses) or bad planets themselves, their Paapatwam is enhanced. In Sagittarius Lagna, the above does not apply. Saturn is Lord of 2 nd and 3 rd Houses. The bad quality of 3 rd House will increase and it becomes totally bad. 366

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 8.3.3 Yogas of Planets with Lordship of 2 nd House In the sub-sections below, Yogas are discussed of Planets having Lordship of the 2 nd House, by virtue of their position and combination with other planets for lagnas other than Aries, Libra and Pisces, as they have already been dealt with. (a) Taurus Lagna Mercury is Lord of 2 nd and 5 th Houses. Table 8.5 gives the Yogas associated with Mercury. Table 8.5: Yogas offered by Mercury in Taurus Lagna 1 Mercury (Lord of 2 nd and 5 th good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions, and House) gives bad Yoga, bad houses. 2 Mercury in combination with Naturally Bad Planets gives no good Yoga, 3 Mercury gives Yoga, 3 rd House. 4 Mercury in combination with Venus gives good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions. This is an exception to this Lagna. 5 Mercury in combination with Sun and Venus gives Avayoga. (b) Gemini Lagna Moon is Lord of 2 nd and 5 th Houses. Table 8.6 gives the Yogas associated with Moon. Table 8.6: Yogas offered by Moon in Gemini Lagna 1 Moon gives good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions, bad Yoga, bad houses, and good Yoga, 2 nd House. 2 Moon in combination with Saturn, Mars and Jupiter gives good Dhana Yoga. Greater Dhana Yoga, 11 th House. This is an exception to this Lagna. (c) Cancer Lagna Sun is Lord of 2 nd House. Table 8.7 gives the Yogas associated with Sun. 367

Jataka Mani Manjusha Table 8.7: Yogas offered by Sun in Cancer Lagna 1 Sun gives good Yoga, Kendra positions, and not in Kona positions. bad Yoga, bad houses. 2 Sun and Jupiter give good Yoga, in interchanged positions, i.e., Sun is in either Sagittarius or Pisces signs, and Jupiter in Leo sign. (d) Leo Lagna Mercury is Lord of 2 nd and 11 th Houses. Table 8.8 gives the Yogas associated with Mercury. Table 8.8: Yogas offered by Mercury in Leo Lagna 1 Mercury gives good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions, and bad Yoga, bad houses. 2 Mercury in combination with Venus (Lord of 3 rd House) gives good Yoga, 2 nd House. This is an exception to this Lagna. (e) Virgo Lagna Venus is Lord of 2 nd and 9 th Houses. Table 8.9 gives the Yogas associated with Venus. Table 8.9: Yogas offered by Venus in Virgo Lagna 1 Venus gives good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions (It is better, if Venus is alone in Kendra and Kona positions), bad Yoga, bad houses, and good Yoga, 2 nd House. 2 Venus in combination with Moon gives good Yoga, 2 nd House, and Kendra and Kona positions. 3 When Venus and Sun (though bad by being Lord of 12 th House) are together, both give 4 Venus (Lord of 2 nd and 9 th Houses) and Sun (Lord of 12 th House) give good Yoga, good Yoga, 368 2 nd House. This is an exception to this Lagna. in interchanged positions of 2 nd and 12 th Houses, i.e., Venus is in 12 th House and Sun is either in 2 nd or 9 th House.

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 (f) Scorpio Lagna Jupiter is Lord of 2 nd and 5 th Houses. Table 8.10 gives the Yogas associated with Jupiter. Table 8.10: Yogas offered by Jupiter in Scorpio Lagna 1 Jupiter gives good Dhana Yoga, 2 nd House. 2 Jupiter in combination with Ketu gives very good Dhana Yoga and unexpected Dhana Labham, 2 nd House. 3 Jupiter in combination with Lords of Kendra and Kona positions, or without them, gives 4 Jupiter in combination with Venus gives good Yoga, bad Yoga. Kendra and Kona positions. 5 Jupiter gives no Yoga, Bad houses. 6 Jupiter in combination with Lords no Yoga. of bad positions gives 7 Jupiter gives Yoga, 12 th House. (g) Sagittarius Lagna Saturn is Lord of 2 nd and 3 rd Houses. Table 8.11 gives the Yogas associated with Jupiter. Table 8.11: Yogas offered by Saturn in Sagittarius Lagna 1 Saturn gives good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions; the Yoga is better in Kendra positions than in Kona positions. 2 Saturn in combination with no Yoga. Mercury and Jupiter gives 3 Saturn gives no Yoga, bad houses. 4 Saturn gives good Yoga, in 3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses, in the period between periods of Jupiter and Mercury, provided Jupiter and Mercury are in bad houses. (h) Capricorn Lagna Saturn is Lord of 1 st and 2 nd Houses. Table 8.12 gives the Yogas associated with Saturn. 369

Jataka Mani Manjusha Table 8.12: Yogas offered by Saturn in Capricorn Lagna 1 Saturn gives good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions. 2 Saturn gives more Dhana Yoga 9 th House. than Raja Yoga, 3 Saturn gives bad Yoga, 10 th House, because Saturn is in exaltation, good Yoga for fame and capacity 10 th House (because Saturn is in exaltation) and bad houses, and bad Yoga, 3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses. 4 Saturn in combination with very good Yoga. 9 th House. Mercury gives 5 Saturn and Mercury give good Yoga, 5 th House (Kona position) and 2 nd House, exept in Libra Sign. bad Yoga, Kendra positions. 6 Saturn and Venus give bad Yoga, 1 st, 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses. 7 Saturn and Mars give good Yoga, Kendra positions. 8 Saturn and Jupiter give good Yoga, Kendra positions. 9 Saturn and Jupiter give bad Yoga, bad houses. (i) Aquarius Lagna Jupiter is Lord of 2 nd and 11 th Houses. Table 8.13 gives the Yogas associated with Jupiter. Table 8.13: Yogas offered by Jupiter in Aquarius Lagna 1 Jupiter gives Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions. 2 Jupiter gives bad Yoga, bad houses. 3 Jupiter in combination with Naturally Bad Planets (Sun, Mars and Saturn) gives good Yoga, Kendra positions; also, the Yoga of the three Naturally Bad Planets is enhanced. 370

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 8.3.4 Yogas of Lords of 11 th and 12 th Houses Lords of 2 nd and 12 th Houses are equal in not being independent; at the same time, they vary in their strength. This is why the Lord of 2 nd House is dealt with separately. It is not correct to say that the Lords of 2 nd and 12 th House are equal in strength, but it is true to say that the Lords of the 11 th and 12 th Houses are equal in forces. Lords of the 11 th and 12 th Houses give Yoga or Avayoga by their positions and and combinations with other planets. They come under four categories, namely: (a) Kendra Vyayadhipatya, (b) Kona Vyayadhipatya, (c) Laabha Vyayadhipatya, and (d) Papa Vyayadhipatya. The Yogas with Kendra Vyayadhipatya and with 2 nd and 11 th Houses for Aries, Libra and Pisces Lagnas have been dealt with in Section 8.3.2. (a) Taurus Lagna Jupiter is Lord of 8 th and 11 th Houses (one papasthana and other mixed sthana). Table 8.14 gives the Yogas associated with Jupiter. Table 8.14: Yogas offered by Jupiter in Taurus Lagna 1 Jupiter gives good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions. 2 Jupiter in combination with Moon good Yog, Kendra and Kona positions. (Lord of 3 rd House) gives No Yoga, bad houses, alone or together; it is much worse, if the bad houses are own houses of Jupiter and Moon. 3 Jupiter and Moon in combination bad Yoga. with any other Planet give 4 Jupiter in combination with any other Planet (except Venus) gives good Yoga. (b) Gemini Lagna Venus is Lord of 5 th and 12 th Houses (Kona Vyayadhipatya), and Mars of 6 th and 11 th Houses (one papasthana and other mixed sthana). Venus has no Vyayadhipatya Dosha, as 12 th House is not an independent House. It retains only his Panchamadhipatya Subha. Table 8.15 gives Yogas associated with Jupiter and Mars. 371

Jataka Mani Manjusha Table 8.15: Yogas offered by Venus and Mars in Gemini Lagna 1 Venus gives good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions. 2 Venus gives Dhana Yoga, 2 nd, 5 th, 9 th and 11 th Houses. 3 Venus gives no Yoga, bad houses. 4 Venus in combination with Mercury and Jupiter gives bad Yoga, by all the three Planets, Kendra and Kona positions. 5 Venus in combination with Saturn (Lord of 8 th and 9 th Houses) gives 6 Venus and Saturn in combination with Naturally Bad Planets gives greater Yoga, bad Yoga for Venus to some extent, Kona positions than in Kendra positions. in any house. 7 Venus and Saturn gives completely bad Yoga, bad houses. 8 Mars gives good Yoga, Kendra positions, lesser Yoga, Kona positions, and bad Yoga, bad houses. 9 Mars in combination with good Yoga, Kendra positions. Mercury and Jupiter gives 10 Mars in combination with good Dhana Yoga, 2 nd, 9 th and 11 th Houses. Venus and Moon gives 11 Mars in combination with good Yoga, Kendra positions, Naturally Bad Planets gives bad Yoga, Kona positions, and much worse Yoga, bad houses. (c) Cancer and Capricorn Lagnas Mercury is Lord of 3 rd and 12 th Houses (Papa Vyayadhipatya) and Venus of 4 th and 11 th Houses (Kendra Papadhipatya). In Cancer Lagna, Mercury is taken as good Planet, because it has no Kendradhipatya Dosha. And, in Capricorn Lagna, the same applicable to Jupiter, because it is Lord of 3 rd and 12 th Houses; thus, it becomes a good Planet. But, Jupiter is better Subha in Capricorn Lagna than Mercury in Cancer Lagna. Table 8.16 gives the Yogas associated with Jupiter and Mercury. 372

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 Table 8.16: Yogas offered by Jupiter and Mercury in Cancer and Capricorn Lagnas 1 Jupiter and Mercury in combination with any other Planet give good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions; the Yoga is higher in Kendra positions than in Kona positions. 2 In Capricorn Lagna, Jupiter no good Yoga, 9 th House. give 3 Jupiter and Mercury give good Yoga, bad houses, and more good Yoga, in own houses of Jupiter and Mercury. This is not found to be true in practice. (d) Leo Lagna Moon is Lord of 12 th House (Papadhipatya), and Mercury of 2 nd and 11 th Houses (Mixed Adhipatya). Table 8.17 gives the Yogas associated with Moon and Mercury. Table 8.17: Yogas offered by Moon and Mercury in Leo Lagna 1 Moon give good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions, and bad Yoga, bad houses. 2 Full Moon give greater Yoga. 3 Moon in combination with Venus (Lord of 3 rd and 10 th Houses) gives bad Yoga. 4 Moon in combination with Mars (Lord of 4 th and 9 th House) gives good Yoga for Moon, but no Yoga for Mars. no Yoga for Moon, but Yoga for Mars. bad houses. (e) Virgo Lagna Sun is Lord of 12 th House (Papadhipatya), and Moon of 11 th House (Mixed Adhipatya). Table 8.18 gives the Yogas associated with Sun and Moon. 373

It has no Vyayadhipatya Dosha. Table 8.19 gives the Yogas associated with Mercury. Table 8.19: Yogas offered by Mercury in Libra Lagna 1 Mercury gives good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions, and bad Yoga, bad houses. 2 Mercury in combination with Sun bad Yoga. (Lord of 1 st and 8 th Houses) gives 4 Sun (Lord of 11 th House) gives good Yoga, 9 th House, and ordinary Yoga, 2 nd and 11 th Houses. 5 Sun in combination with Venus and Jupiter (Lord of 3 rd and 6 th Houses) gives no good Yoga. 6 Sun in combination with Mars (Lord of 2 nd and 7 th Houses) gives good Yoga, Kendra and Kona positions, except in 7 th House (Kendra position) in Aries Sign, becasye Sun is in exaltation. (g) Scorpio Lagna Mercury is Lord of 8 th and 11 th Houses (Papadhipatya and Mixed Adhipatya). Yogas mentioned for Jupiter in Taurus Lagna, also apply to Mercury in Scorpio Lagna. 374

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 (h) Saggitarius Lagna Mars is Lord of 5 th and 12 th Houses (Kona Vyayadhipatya), and Venus Lord of 6 th and 11 th Houses (Papadhipatya and Mixed Adhipatya). Kendra and Kona positions.

Jataka Mani Manjusha 8.3.5 Yogas of Lord of 8 th House The 8 th House plays an important part in a Horoscope. Except Moon and Sun, all other Planets have two Lordships, i.e., in addition to the Lordship of 8 th House, it has one more Lordship. Such combinations are 1 st and 8 th Houses, 1 st and 6 th Houses, 5 th and 8 th Houses, 8 th and 11 th Houses, 7 th and 8 th Houses, 3 rd and 8 th Houses, and 8 th and 9 th Houses. The strengths of Planets and their Yogas are discussed in this section, when these Planets are in the 12 Lagnas. Sloka: Bhagya Vyayadhipatyena Randrireso Na Subhapradaha Sa Yeva Subha Sandhata lagnadheesopi Chethswayam Yoga in a horoscope is determined from the Bhagyasthana. 12 th House to 9 th House is known as the 8 th House. The Lord of this 8 th House gives no Yoga, because 8 th House is Vyayasthana to Bhagyasthana. But, it gives Yoga simultaneously, when it is the Lord of 1 st House. Other Astrologers view it differently. According to them, when a Planet becomes Lord of 8 th and 9 th simultaneously, it does not give Yoga. It is evident that Ashtamadipati is bad. This comment is applicable only for Gemini Lagna for which Saturn is Lord of 8 th and 9 th Houses. Saturn does not give Yoga to Gemini Lagna particularly in Kona positions and bad houses. In practice, when Naturally Good Planets are Lords of 8 th House are less bad Planets than Naturally Bad Planets. Naturally Good Planets are bad, only when they are Lords of Kendra positions. Naturally Good Planets are good, when they are Lords of bad houses. (a) Leo Lagna Jupiter (being Lord of 8 th and 5 th Houses) gives Yoga not only in the Kendra and Kona Houses, but also in the 12 th and 8 th Houses. But, this will not hold good for other Naturally Good Planets. Ashtamadhipati gives good and bad Yogas, depending on position and combination. (b) Saggitarius and Capricorn Lagnas In Saggitarius Lagna, Moon is Lord of 8 th House, and in Capricorn Lagna, Sun is the Lord of 8 th House. They have no other Aadhipatya for these Lagnas. Asthamadhipati will have another Lordship in other Lagnas. It is generally held that Moon and Sun are not bad Planets by Ashtamadhipatya, but this is not found to be true in practice. (c) Saggitarius Lagna Moon (Lord of 8 th House) gives Yoga when in Kona positions and also in 12 th House. Moon does not give Yoga in other bad houses. 376

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 (d) Taurus and Scorpio Lagnas Jupiter and Mercury (being Lords of the 8 th and 11 th Houses) do not give good Yoga, when they are in bad houses (3 rd, 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses), but there is an exception in Leo Lagna. (e) Cancer Lagna Saturn (being Lord of 7 th and 8 th Houses) gives good Yoga in Kendra positions, ordinary Yoga in Kona positions, and bad Yoga in bad houses. This Avayoga is greater, when Saturn is in 3 rd and 8 th Houses. (f) Gemini Lagna Saturn (being Lord of 8 th and 9 th Houses) gives Yoga only in 3 rd House and no Yoga in 6 th, 8 th and 12 th Houses. This is an exception to this Lagna. (g) Virgo Lagna Mars (being Lord of 3 rd and 8 th Houses) does not give Yoga in any bad house, and if the bad house is own house, the Yoga is much worse. But, Mars gives Yoga only in 12 th house. This is an exception to this Lagna. Mars and Rahu also give good Yoga, when in this 12 th House. Similarly, Sun and Mars give good Yoga, when they interchange Houses between 12 th House (Lord of Sun) and 3 rd and 8 th Houses (Lordship of Mars). This interchange does not hold good, in other Lagnas. (h) Aquarius Lagna Mercury (being Lord of 5 th and 8 th Houses) is regarded as Subha, in the same way as Jupiter in Leo Lagna. But, while deciding natural qualities of Mercury and Jupiter, the difference has to be considered. So, Mercury does not give Yoga in bad houses, though 8 th House is the own House of Mercury, where Mercury is in exaltation and Moola Trikona; it gives bad results. (i) Pisces Lagna Venus is better than Mercury, though Venus is the Lord of 3 rd and 8 th. Venus gives Yoga in 8 th House and not in other bad Houses (3 rd, 6 th and 12 th Houses). Venus in combination with Saturn gives Yoga when in 8 th House. This is an exception to this Lagna. Ashtamadhipati will not give Yoga, and at the same time, if Ashtamadhipati is Lord of 1 st House also, Ashtamadhipati gives good Yoga. This Lagna Ashtamadhipatya is present only in Pisces and Libra Lagnas. 377

Jataka Mani Manjusha (j) Aries and Libra Lagnas Mars, the Naturally Bad Planet, is Lord of Lagna and Ashtama (in Aries Lagna), and Venus, the Naturally Good Planet, is Lord of Lagna and Ashtama (in Libra Lagna). This does not hold good in all other Lagnas, because one is a bad planet and the other a good one. Sages took Lagna as both Kendra and Kona; this is an important factor as per tradition. Here, it is the tradition, in Libra Lagna, that Venus is taken as Kendradhipati, and in Pisces Lagna, Mars as Konadhipati. Then, Venus becomes a bad planet by having Kendradhipatya. Mars becomes equally bad by having Konadhipatya Dosha. When Venus and Mars are in their own Houses (Lagna Kendra), they do not give Yoga; Venus is particulary bad. At the same time, they give Yoga in all other Kendra positions, namely 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses. (k) Taurus Lagna Venus (being Lord of 1 st and 6 th Houses) is similar to Venus and Mars in Libra and Aries Lagnas, respectively. Venus does not give Yoga in his own House of Lagna Kendra, because it has Kendradhipatya Dosha. But, Mars gives Yoga for Scorpio Lagna (as Mars is Lord of 1 st and 6 th Houses) though it is in Lagna Kona position; this is because, Mars becomes a Konapaapi only when it is the Lagna and Ashtamadhipatya Lord (of 1 st and 8 th Houses). (l) Gemini Lagna Saturn (being Lord of 8 th and 9 th Houses) is as influential as Venus and Mars, when they are Lords of Lagnasthanas. Venus gives Yoga both in Kona and Kendra positions. It does not give Yoga in bad houses; of all the bad houses, the 8 th House is very bad. Venus gives Yoga in Lagna and Ashtama Houses, when these are own Houses of Venus. This not found to be true in practice. 378

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 8.4 ASHTAMDHIPATYA OF MERCURY AND MOON, AND KENDRA-KONA STRENGHTS OF MARS Ashtamadhipatya means Lordship of 8 th House, and Kendradhipatya means Lordship of 1 st, 4 th, 7 th and 10 th Houses. As briefly stated before, Kendradhipatya is bad for Naturally Good Planets; the extent of badness is directly proportional and equal to their shubhatwa. The badness of Naturally Good and Bad Planets are summarized in Table 8.22. Ashtamadhipatya of various Planets for various Lagnas are shown in Table 8.23. Table 8.22: Badness of Naturally Good and Bad Planets Naturally Good Planets S.No. Planet Good Quality Factor Badness of Planet becomes Lord of 1 st, 4 th, 7 th or 10 th House 1. Jataka Mani Manjusha Only in Sagittarius and Virgo Lagnas, Mercury has two Kendradhipatyas, when it becomes fully bad. Hence, good and bad Yogas of Mercury are discussed in this section. Because Moon s shubatwa changes due to Kendradhipatya, its dosha varies as per its strength in different tithis. Because Sun and Moon have only Ashtamadhipatya due to lordship of a single House, good and bad Yogas of these two Lagnas are discussed in this section. Only Mars becomes Lord of Kendra and Kona Houses, and of Kendra and Bad Houses. Thus, Lordships of five planets for various Lagnas are presented in Table 8.24 and Figure 8.1; since Sun and Moon have only one Lordship, they are not presented in this section. Table 8.24: Lordship of 5 Planets having two Lordships Signs, namely Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Mars and Saturn for all Lagnas S.No. Lagna Kendra -Kona Kendra -Papa 1 Aries Venus 2, 7 Saturn 10, 11 2 Taurus Saturn 9, 10 Venus 1, 6 Mars 7, 12 Kendra - Ashtama dhipatya Mars 1, 8 Two Two Lordships Lordships - Papa - Kendra Mercury 3, 6 3 Gemini Mars 6, 11 380 Kona -Papa Jupiter 9, 12 Mercury 2, 5 Mercury 1, 4 Jupiter 7, 10 4 Cancer Mars 5, 10 Venus 4, 11 Saturn 7, 8 Mercury 3, 12 5 Leo Mars Venus Mercury 4, 9 5, 10 2, 11 Saturn 6, 7 6 Virgo Mercury 1, 10 Jupiter 4, 7 7 Libra Saturn 4, 5 Mars 2, 7 Venus 1, 8 Jupiter 3, 6 Venus 5, 11 Jupiter 6, 9 Jupiter 5, 8 Venus 2, 9 Saturn 5, 6 Mercury 9, 12 Ashtama Kona dhipatya - Ashtama - Papa dhipatya Jupiter 8, 11 Saturn 8, 9 Mars 3, 8

Jataka Mani Manjusha Table 8.24 shows that Lordship of Kendra and Kona Houses, and Kona and Kendra Houses, come from Saturn (Lord of 9 th and 10 th Houses) in Taurus Lagna, Mars (Lord of 5 th and 10 th Houses) in Cancer Lagna, Mars (Lord of 4 th and 9 th Houses) in Leo Lagna, Saturn (Lord of 4 th and 5 th Houses) in Libra Lagna, and Venus (Lord of 5 th and 10 th Houses) in Capricorn Lagna; and Lord of 4 th and 9 th Houses in Aquarius Lagna. In Taurus Lagna, Saturn (Lord of Kona and Kendra Houses) is a Shubha and Yoga Karaka Planet. In Libra Lagna, Saturn (Lord of Kona and Kendra Houses) is a Yoga Karaka Planet, but to a less extent than in Taurus Lagna. In Capricorn Lagna, Venus Kendradhipatya is more owing to being Lord of 10 th House from Lagna. For Aquarius, Venus (Lord of Kona 9 th House and 4 th Kendra House) is a Yoga Karaka Planet by virtue of a Naturally Good Planet having Lordship of 9 th House. In Cancer Lagna, Mars is first Lord of Kona House (5 th House) and then Lord of Kendra House (10 th House); therefore, it gives good Yoga. Further, in Aquarius Lagna, Mars has Papadhipatya (3 rd House) followed by Kendradhipatya (10 th House), and hence became a subha and a most benevolent planet, as it has no Konadhipatya Dosha, being a Naturally Bad Planet. Its Yoga is greater in Aquarius Lagna than in Cancer Lagna. In Libra Lagna, Mars is Lord of Papadhipatya (Lord of 2 nd House) followed by Kendradhipatya (Lord of 7 th House). It is Yoga Karaka Planet in Libra Lagna. This section deals with Konadhipatya, Kendradhipatya and Kendra-Papadhipatya of Mars. 8.4.1 Ashtamadhipatya of Mercury and Moon Kendradhipatya is applicabile to Naturally Good Planets, namely Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Moon. Sloka: Budha Sthadanu Chandropi bhavethhadanu Thadwidhaha Narandhresathwadoshastu Suryachandram sorbhaveth The Kendradhipatya of Mercury, a half-good Planet, is less than that of Jupiter (Full Subha) and Venus (¾ Subha). Kendradhipatya of Moon is less than that of Mercury. Sun and Moon have no Astamadhipatya Dosha. But, these Doshas are not found to be true in practice for Mercury and Moon. When Mercury is in conjunction with Naturally Bad Planets, then it is regarded as a totally-bad Planet. While determining Kendradhipatya Dosha of Moon also, it is necessary to consider the Subhatwa of Moon according to Tithi, which varies. 382

Chapter 8: Strengths & Weaknesses of Adhipatya Planets, and Yogas of Lords of Houses 2, 8, 11 & 12 (a) Saggitarius Lagna Sun is Lord of 9 th House, and Mercury is Lord of 7 th and 10 th Houses. Sun has Konadhipatya Dosha and Mercury has Kendradhipatya of Two Houses. Sun and Mercury give bad results, when in Kendra and Kona positions, or when in the interchange of their own Houses, or in their own Houses. Sun and Mercury give good results when positioned in bad houses, but separated. (b) Virgo Lagna Sun is Lord of 12 th House (a Papasthana) and Mercury of 1 st and 10 th Houses (having Kendradhipatya Dosha of Two Houses). Sun alone in Kendra and Kona positions and Mercury alone in a bad house, give good Yoga, but their combination does not give good results. Kendradhipatya Dosha of Moon is less than that of Mercury. There is some contradiction in saying that Sun and Moon do not have Ashtamadhipatya Dosha, because in the sloka above, that all Planets are bad with this Dosha. It is better to say that Ashtamadhipatya Dosha is greater of Saturn and Mars, than of Sun. In the same way, Ashtamadhipatya Dosha of Moon varies according to Tithis. Similarly, Ashtamadhipatya Dosha and the associated Yoga and Avayoga should be decided according to Stithi and Lordship. 8.4.2 Kendra-Kona Strengths of Mars Sloka: Kujasya karma Nethruthwa prayuktha subha Karitha Thri Kona syapi Nethruthwena karme satwa Mathra thaha Mars gives good Yoga, when it is Lord of 10 th House. It will not give Yoga, if it has Panchamadhipatya (though it is Lord of 10 th House). Some astrologers say that Mars will not give Yoga by being Lord of 10 th House, unless it is Lord of 5 th House. Other astrologers say, whatever good Mars has by its Lordship of 10 th House, it will be taken away when it is Lord of 5 th and 9 th Houses. But, this is not found to be true in practice. (a) Cancer and Aquarius Lagnas The above does not seem to be true in Cancer Lagna. Mars is Lord of 10 th House both in Cancer and Aquarius Lagnas; in Cancer Lagna, Mars is Lord of 5 th and 10 th Houses, and in Aquarius Lagna, Mars is Lord of 3 rd and 10 th Houses. In Aquarius Lagna, Mars gives greater Yoga than that in Cancer Lagna. In pactice, Mars gives good Yoga in Cancer Lagna, when in Kendra positions, and bad Yoga, when in Kona positions and bad houses, but different in Aquarius Lagna. 383
