READING 8 Read the text about Pluto. Find in the text the words below. PLUTO: the *Dwarf Planet Did you know that Pluto was once the ninth planet in our solar system? Now, it is just considered as a dwarf planet. Astronomers discovered this tiny planet in 1930 and an 11 year old girl from England suggested its name: Pluto. Pluto is smaller than 7 of the moons in the Solar System. Because it is very small, many scientists don't consider it a planet. In 1999, a group of scientists tried to re-classify Pluto and changed its status from planet to dwarf planet on 24 th August 2006. Now, at schools children learn that there are eight planets in the solar system, and not nine. Scientists are conducting studies with the Hubble Space Telescope on Pluto and its moon. This telescope sends the clearest images of this dwarf planet However, we don t know much about Pluto and its moons because it is very far. Pluto has 4 moons. The largest moon is Charon. Charon is a bit smaller than its parent Pluto. For this reason, Pluto and Charon are often called a double planet system. Pluto's two other moons are called Hydra and Nix. The newest moon, only recently discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope in the summer of 2011, is temporarily named P4. It is located between the orbits of Nix and Hydra. * dwarf: enano Seventh, eighth, (ordinal number). Name of a country. These people study the planets and other objects in space. The opposite of bigger. The name of Pluto s biggest moon. Opposite of far. 4 Mª José Alcaina Fort 2012
