Hilo Orchid Society Newsletter March 2018 Next%Meeting% Date:&& Sat.,&Mar.&10,&2018& Time:&& 1:30.4:00& Place:& Kamana&Senior&Center,& & 127&Kamana&St.,&Hilo& Speaker:& Roy&Andrade& Topic:& Hard&Cane&Dendrobium& Culture& There are over 1000 species of Dendrobiums, and they grow in climates from hot equatorial jungles to cool misty cloud forests to monsoon climates where it s bone-dry for half of the year. So how do you grow them? It all depends what type of Dendrobium. This month, Roy Andrade, President of the Ewa Orchid Society in Oahu, will tell us how to grow hard cane Dendrobiums. These are the most popular Dendrobiums, with long-lasting flowers on spikes arching from the tops of the canes (the elongated pseudobulbs). Roy will give some inside tips on how to control insects, the types of fertilizers he uses, what kind of media to use for different growing conditions, and more. Roy was born in Honolulu and raised on Oahu. He is the maintenance superintendent at the Kalaeloa Cogeneration power plant. His orchid collection started in 1992 with a few orchids around his yard, and has now grown to over 1000 orchids, mostly Dendrobiums, but also a wide variety of others like Vandas, Cattleyas, and Paphs. He is an AOS judge and is currently president of the Ewa Orchid Society. If you like presentations about how to grow orchids, this meeting is for you. Don t miss it! Last%Chance%to%Pay%Dues If you don't renew your membership by the end of this month, we have to drop you from our membership. Please don't make us do that! If you have already paid, thank you! Also, new members who joined at last year's orchid show or in September 2017 or later are considered paid through 2018. But if you haven't already renewed, please fill out the form on page 5 and mail it in with your payment, or you can pay at the meeting. Thanks! Dues are still only $20 for individual membership or $25 for family membership. Newcomers%Group%Tour We re holding of our popular Newcomers Tours on March 17. This time it s to a commercial orchid nursery near Hakalau. If you re a newcomer you joined HOS in the past two years but you didn t receive an invitation, please contact George Crosthwaite at drghc@hawaii.rr.com. These tours let newcomers see how other people, both commercial growers and hobbyists, grow orchids in a variety of environments. And it s a chance to meet other new members and maybe make some new friends! Lindenia'Orchid'Prints'for'Sale'at' March'10'HOS'Meeting' The Hilo Public Library recently found a set of historic orchid folios in the library vault. They are part of the Lindenia Iconography of Orchids collection, one of the classic 19 th century sets of orchid illustrations. These were printed in Brussels in the 1890s, some in French and some in English. Each folio is 11 x14 and contains four gorgeous color plates of orchids that vary from folio to folio (see some examples below). The library will be selling them on the mainland, but they are giving Hilo Orchid Society members the chance to buy them first. The Friends of the Library will have the folios at our March 10 meeting where you can buy them. They are bringing 23+ folios for sale. They are asking $80 per folio. You can pay by cash or check, payable to HPL Friends. Your Editor found some 11 x14 Lindenia prints listed on ebay for $50 each, so $80 for 4 prints seems like a bargain. This is a rare opportunity to acquire orchid art. Photos by Dana Culleney 4
