Students from educational institutions across Kerala participated in the event. The workshop was inaugurated by the Vice chancellor of Cochin University, Prof. (Dr.) P.K. Abdul Azis, on 16 th April 2007. The workshop was conducted to give the young minds an exposure to various interesting aspects of physics. Hands-on experience on various experiments in physics, telescope making etc were also arranged. The workshop also provided an opportunity for students to see some of the frontier experiments being carried out in the research labs of the Department. Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis (Vice Chancellor, CUSAT) inaugurating the Ten day workshop for school children

Students doing experiments in solar cells Telescope making

Participants of ten day workshop for school children Seven experiments and about 25 lectures on different topics were given in the workshop. One day was completely dedicated for telescope making in which the students were taught the basics of telescope optics and were trained to make their own telescopes with the raw materials provided. One complete day was spent in c-sis (Center for Science in Society), an auxiliary institution established in the University campus to create scientific awareness among the public, where students got acquaintance with different scientific principles through SCIENCE-in-ACTION working models and See and Believe experiments. The students were also given a chance to use the library facilities during these days. More Details of workshop are available at http://physics.cusat.ac.in/spie/workshop_07.htm Seminar on Gravity and Light (February 23-24, 2007) The SPIE-CUSAT Chapter joined hands with the Department of Physics and the IUCAA Reference Centre to organize a two day seminar on "Gravity and Light", an annual event conducted since 2005. This seminar is usually meant for post graduate students in physics. Students from different parts of the state participated in the event and experts from across the country were invited to deliver lectures on topics related to space,

optoelectronics, spectroscopy, etc. This year, the seminar was conducted during 23 24 February 2007. The details are given below: Speakers Topics Prof. C. V. Vishveshwara, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore Prof. R. Vijaya, IIT, Bombay Prof. E. Krishnakumar, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai Black Holes Modes in Optical waveguides, Switching in optical waveguides Physics of Attosecond light Pulses and its Applications Prof. T.R. Govindarajan, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai Prof. P.P.Divakaran, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai Prof. G. Aruldhas, Kerala University, Thiruvananthapuram Geometry and Gravity Discovery of Calculus in ancient Kerala Recent Trends in Raman Spectroscopy Dr.R.Vijaya, Associate Professor, Dept. of Physics, IIT Bombay gave two talks on the basics of waveguides under visiting lecture program. Future Plans Monthly lecture programs which help a lot to the scholarly improvement of research and post-graduate students will be continued. National seminar on New Horizons in Theoretical and Experimental Physics will be conducted in October 2007 in collaboration with the Department of Physics, CUSAT. Physics quiz for graduate students from various colleges in Kerala will be organized in November 2007 in association with Department of Physics, CUSAT
