It is shown that such theory may ps solar system tests. It is demonstrated that modified GB gravity may describe the most interesting features of late-time cosmology: the transition from deceleration to acceleration, crossing the phantom divide, current acceleration with effective cosmological constant, quintessence or phantom equation of state of the universe. PACS numbers: 98.8.-k, 98.8.Es, 97.6.Bw, 98.7.Dk. The explanation of the current acceleration of the universe dark energy problem remains to be a challenge for theoretical physics. Among the number of the approaches to dark energy, the very interesting one is related with the modifications of gravity at large distances. For instance, adding /R term [, ] to Einstein action leads to gravitational alternative for dark energy where late-time acceleration is caused by the universe expansion. Unfortunately, such /R gravity contains the instabilities [] of gravitationally bound objects. These instabilities may disappear with the account of higher derivative terms leading to consistent modified gravity[]. Another proposals for modified gravity suggest lnr [5] or Tr/R terms[6], account of inverse powers of Riemann invariants [7] or some other modifications [8]. The one-loop quantization of general fr in de Sitter space is also done [9]. In addition to the stability condition which significally restricts the possible form of fr gravity, another restriction comes from the study of its newtonian limit []. Psing these two solar system tests leads to necessity of finetuning of the form and coefficients in fr action, like in consistent modified gravity []. That is why it h been even suggested to consider such alternative gravities in Palatini formulation for recent discussion and list of references, see []. In the present paper we suggest new cls of modified gravity, where Einstein action is modified by the function fg, G being Gauss-Bonnet GB in- Electronic address: snojiri@yukawa.kyoto-u.ac.jp, nojiri@cc.nda.ac.jp Electronic address: odintsov@ieec.uab.es variant. It is known that G is topological invariant in four dimensions while it may lead to number of interesting cosmological effects in higher dimensional brane-world approach for review, see []. It naturally appears in the low energy effective action from string/m-theory for recent discussion of latetime cosmology in stringy gravity with GB term, see []. As we demonstrate below, modified fg gravity pses solar system tests for reonable choice of the function f. Moreover, it is shown that such modified GB gravity may describe late-time effective quintessence, phantom or cosmological constant acceleration of the universe. For quite large cls of functions f it is possible to describe the transition from deceleration to acceleration or from nonphantom phe to phantom phe in the late universe within such theory. Thus, modified GB gravity represents quite interesting gravitational alternative for dark energy with more freedom if compare with fr gravity.. Let us start from the following action: S = d x κ R + fg. Here G is the GB invariant: G = R R µν R µν + R µνξσ R µνξσ. By introducing two auxilliary fields A and B, one may rewrite the action S = d x κr + B G A + fa Varying over B, it follows A = G. Using it in, the action is recovered. On the other hand, by the.
variation over A in, one gets B = f A. Hence, S = d x κ R + f AG Af A + fa. The scalar is not dynamical, it h no kinetic term and is introduced for simplicity. Varying over A, the relation A = G is obtained again. The spatially-flat FRW universe metric is chosen ds = dt + at dx i. i= The first FRW equation h the following form: = κ H + Af A fa Ȧf AH. 5 Here the Hubble rate H is defined by H ȧ/a. For, GB invariant G A h the following form: G = A = ḢH + H. 6 In general, Eq.5 h desitter universe solution where H and therefore A = G are constants. If H = H with constant H, Eq.5 looks : = κ H + H f H f H. 7 For large number of choices of the function f, Eq.7 h a non-trivial H real solution for H de- Sitter universe. Hence, such desitter solution may be applied for description of the early-time inflationary well late-time accelerating universe. Let us check now how modified GB gravity pses the solar system tests. The GB correction to the Newton law may be found from the coupling matter to the action. Varying over g µν, we obtain = κ R µν + gµν R + T µν + gµν fg f GRR µν + f GR µ ρ Rνρ f GR µρστ R ν ρστ f GR µρσν R ρσ + µ ν f G R g µν f G R ρ µ f G R νρ ρ ν f G R µρ + f G R µν + g µν ρ σ f G R ρσ ρ σ f G R µρνσ. 8 Here T µν is matter EMT. In the expression 8, the third derivative f G is included f G = f G G + f G µ G µ G, for example. In the equation 5 corresponding to the first FRW equation, however, the terms including f do not appear. When T µν =, the t, t-component of Eq.8 reproduces Eq.5 by identifying G with A. The perturbation around the desitter background which is a solution of 7 may be eily constructed. We now write the desitter space metric g µν, which gives the following Riemann tensor: R µνρσ = H gµρ g νσ g µσ g νρ. 9 The flat background corresponds to the limit of H. Represent g µν = g µν + h µν. For simplicity, the following gauge condition is chosen: g µν h µν = µ h µν =. Then Eq.8 gives = κ h µν H h µν + Tµν. The GB term contribution does not appear except the length parameter /H of the desitter space which is determined with the account of GB term. Eq. proves that there is no correction to Newton law in desitter and even in the flat background corresponding to H whatever is the form of f. We should note that the expression could be valid only in the desitter background. In more general FRW universe, there could appear the corrections coming from fg term. We should also note that in deriving, we have used a gauge condition g µν h µν = but if we include the mode corresponding to g µν h µν, there might appear corrections from fg term. Eq. only shows that for the mode corresponding to the usual graviton, any correction coming from fg does not appear in the desitter background. In ce of fr-gravity [, ], for most interesting choices of the function f an instability w observed in []. The instability is generated since the FRW equation, contains derivatives of the fourth order and therefore the scalar curvature propagates. This may cause the appearence of growing force between the galaxies. Only special forms of fr may be free of such instability []. In fg-gravity ce, the scalar field denoted by A in h no kinetic term. Then the scalar field or the curvature itself does not propagate and therefore there is no such instability in [], which is clear from the no correction to the Newton law in 8. Thus, modified GB gravity may ps the solar system tests at let, for some functions fg. Having in mind the fundamental property of the current accelerating universe, it is interesting to
study the possible transition between deceleration and acceleration of the universe for the action. First, Eq.6 could be rewritten G = A = H ä/a. Then at the transition point ä =, the Gauss-Bonnet term vanishes: G = A =. Let us sume the transition occurs at t = t. The Hubble rate H may be expanded H = H + H t t + H t t +H t t + O t t. At the transition point t = t, one finds G = 8H H + H. Since G = there, it follows H = H. Hence, G A is: G = 96H H H t t +8H 5H H H + H t t +O t t. We now also sume that fa could be expanded fa = f + f A + f A + f A + O A. 5 Then substituting,, and 5 into 5, we find H = H 96H f 6κ + f 8H, H = H 96 6κ f H f 96f H 6κ + f 8H. 6 Combining and 6, one can show that the Hubble rate can be determined consistently, which suggests the existence of the transition between deceleration and acceleration of the universe. We should note that H could be determined by a proper initial condition. Then the transition condition could be f, that is, fa contains the quadratic term on A. Let us consider now the possible transition between non-phantom phe and phantom phe of the universe if current universe is phantom one. We now sume that the transition occurs at t = t. Since Ḣ = at the transition point, it is natural to sume the Hubble rate behaves H = H + H t t + O t t. 7 Hence, A G behaves G = A = H + 8H H t t + O t t. 8 Eq. 5 shows H κ H = + H f H f H 5 H 7f H, 9 if f H. We also note that H and H should be positive. Eq.9 suggests the existence of the consistent solution. Then the crossing of phantom divide could occur for large cls of functions fg. The condition could be f and H > when H = H >. The transition between non-phantom phe and phantom phe could be regarded a perturbation from the desitter solution in 7. The following perturbation may be suggested H = H + δh, where H satisfies 7. Eq. 5 gives = δḧ + H δḣ + H + 96κ H f H δh. Here, it is supposed that f H. Let λ satisfies = λ + H λ H + 96κ H f H. Then δh behaves δh e λt. If λ is real, δh is monotonically increing or decreing, Ḣ does not vanish and therefore there is no transition. If 6κ H 8 f H <, λ becomes imaginary and δh oscillates. Therefore the transition between the phantom phe, where Ḣ = δḣ >, and the non-phantom phe, where Ḣ = δḣ < could be repeated in oscillation regime. The amplitude of the oscillation of δh decrees δh e Ht/ and the universe ymptotically goes to desitter space.
. To show that modified GB gravity may lead to quite rich and realistic cosmological dynamics we consider some explicit examples of the function fg. The following solvable model, which does not belong to the above cls, may be discussed Here f is a constant. Assuming Eq.5 gives H = fa = f A /. { h = κ h f + h h t when h > h t t when h <, 5 h h /. 6 The solution differs for h > and h < ces. The simple analysis shows that when f > /κ, there are two negative solutions, which decribe effective phantom universe with w <. When f < /κ, we have one h > solution, which describes the effective quinteessence < w < / and one h < solution describing effective phantom. If 6f /κ < /κ 8, there are two real solutions which satisfy < h <. For the second model let fa behaves fa f A β, 7 in a proper limit with constants f and β. We now sume in a limit t, H behaves H h t α, 8 with constants h and α. If α >, A G behaves A = G h t α. 9 Then 5 gives αβ = α, i.e. β = / or α =. The ce β = / corresponds to the model. On the other hand, since H is a constant when α =, this ce corresponds to 7. Hence, the only new ce is α <, where A = G αh tα. Then in 5, the behavior of each term can be described H O t α, Af A fa O t α β, Ȧf AH O t αβ+. With the sumption α = α β > α β +, one finds β = α/ α and α < /, which is consistent with α <. The sumption α < and β = α/ α restricts / < β < /. Eq.5 also gives = h κ + β f αh β, which leads to non-trivial solution for h if f <. Let us consider t or t t limit. If α >, we obtain Eq.. If one requires α = α β = α β +, then β = α and α =, /. In ce β = α = /, Eq.5 tells = κ + 9 f h /, which requires f > and gives a non-trivial solution for h. If one restricts α = α β + < α β, it follows β = /. In this ce Eq.5 gives = κ h α f α αh /. where α can be arbitrary long α >. If α < see Eq.9, Eq.5 gives β = + α, = κ + β 5ββ h β β. The first equation shows / > β > /. The second equation in gives a non-trivial solution for h if f >. The above results show that the ymptotic solution behaving 8 with α can be obtained only for the ces where β = / or / < β < / when t or β = / or / < β < / when t or t t. In other situations, the ymptotic solution corresponds to the desitter space 7. The following model may be taken next example: Then Eq.7 gives fa = α A + βa. 5 = κ H + α H + 576βH 8. 6 It could be difficult to solve the above equation exactly, but if the curvature and therefore H is small, one gets H 6 H 6 s ακ. 7
5 On the other hand if the curvature is large, we obtain H H 6 l 9βκ. 8 For the consistency H l H s, hence αβκ. Then the large curvature solution 8 might correspond to the inflation in the early universe and the small curvature one in 7 to the late time acceleration. Similarly, one can construct many more explicit examples of modified GB gravity which complies with solar system tests at let, for some backgrounds and leads to accelerating effective cosmological constant, phantom or quintessence late-time cosmology.. In summary, it is shown that modified GB gravity pses two fundamental solar system tests in the same sense General Relativity. It eily describes the late-time acceleration of the universe whatever is the effective equation of state effective cosmological constant, quintessence or phantom. Moreover, we demonstrated that such modified GB gravity may describe the transition from deceleration to acceleration well crossing of phantom divide. It remains to understand whether any limitations to the function fg from solar system gravitational physics may be found. More serious limitations to its form may be searched fitting the theory against the observational data. [] S. Capozziello, Int. J. Mod. Phys. D 8, ; S. Capozziello, S. Carloni and A.
