There was a time when the woods near Duva ate girls or so the story goes. But it's just possible that the danger may be a little bit closer to home. This story is a companion folk tale to Leigh Bardugo's debut novel, Shadow and Bone. A Reading the Paranormal Review By Kelly Rubidoux Okay. This? Was creepy perfect. Just... *shudders* yeah. Although no characters from book 1 put in an appearance, this story easily puts you back into the world of the Grisha. Come to think of it, no Grisha put in an appearance either. That's really beside the point. This world comes alive and pulls you in and twists you up in its mythology. I do love the feel of this town on the brink of the forest. Food is scarce, the people watch their neighbors with cautious eyes as girls begin disappearing, and you know something dangerous is lurking around the edges but you can't quite put your finger on what's what. Lovely, creepy, horrifying, and completely fascinating. -Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal 7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Suspenseful Fairytale By Amanda Reads The Witch of Duva by Leigh Bardugo is a short fairytale set in the world of Shadow and Bone. The two stories do not directly connect, but The Witch of Duva is a folktale that provides some insight into the culture and religion of Bardugo's fantasy world.
The Witch of Duva is largely written in the style of the Grimm brothers. It's a dark tale, and Bardugo isn't afraid to make the heroine, Nadya, suffer. Bardugo spins classic elements of fairytales to fit her fantasy culture: an evil stepmother, a dangerous forest, superstitious townsfolk, and oblivious men. As far as fairytales go, there's nothing groundbreaking here, but Bardugo does an excellent job writing dark suspense and will pull readers in with this short tale. The premise is this: Nadya, daughter of a master carpenter, lives in Duva with her mother and older brother. Life is prosperous and grand, but then famine comes. The family's wealth falls away, Nadya's mother dies, and her brother is drafted into the army. Pretty soon, it's not just hunger and grief that Nadya has to contend with -- her stepmother is evil. The Witch of Duva is rich with imagery and the descriptions of food will make your mouth water. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story, though I was a bit annoyed when I realized that half of the Kindle file was devoted to the first chapter of Shadow and Bone. I thought I had a lot more of The Witch of Duva left to enjoy when it suddenly ended. The ending was the only thing about this story that I found less than satisfactory. With fairytales, the reader often roots for the hero[ine] to overcome his/her obstacles, but also for the villain to get his/her comeuppance. In The Witch of Duva, Nadya is elevated above poverty and her tragic home life with her evil stepmother, but the fates of the characters who have done wrong are abrupt and vague. A character who didn't even seem particularly evil got a gruesome, graphic death, while the main villain's fate was consigned to a single vague sentence. Maybe it's just because I was raised on Grimm, Perrault, and Anderson, but I enjoy it when the villain's head is paraded through town on a spike at the end. Altogether, it was a delightful short story that contributes to the worldview of Shadow and Bone. Fans of the series are sure to enjoy it. See all 59 customer reviews...
