CEE3430 Engineering Hydrlgy HEC HMS Bare Essentials Tutrial and Example Margaret Matter and David Tarbtn February 2010 This tutrial prvides sme bare essentials step by step guidance n starting t use HEC HMS fllwing Example 5 1 (page 335) f Bedient et al. (2008), but presented in terms f the current versin f HEC HMS (Versin 3.5). This is nt intended t be cmprehensive r t replace the HEC HMS dcumentatin; rather it is a getting started guide intended t get yu thrugh a first run using the prgram and prvide the bare essential knwledge frm which yu can learn mre by explring the sftware and mre cmprehensive manuals. Check Create a desktp shrtcut, and click Next Click Install takes secnds t install A final InstallShield message appears: click Finish 1

2. Running a simple case: This fllws Example 5.1, the Small Waters shed Example, frm pagee 335 f Bedient et al. (2008) upgradedd fr the current HEC HMS versin (3.5). Steps: a. Duble click n the HEC HMS 3.5 icn and the prgram screen, similar t the picture belw, appears b. On the menu bar, click n File Fr new prjects, click n New Fr existing prjects, click n Open and select frm existingg prjects. c. The New prject will be the setup in Example 5.1 Create a prject name (I chse Ex5.1 ), Select where the prject wrk will be stred, Prvide a descriptin, and Select the units t use. Click Create 2

d. Begin t set up the basin At the tp n the menu bar, select Cmpnents Select Basin Mdel Manager and click n New Prvide a basin name and descriptin Click n Create The flder, Basin Mdels, appears in the Watershed Explrer (n left f screen) under the prject name, Ex5.11 Clse the Basin Manager (click X) e. Set up basin details Duble click n (r expand) the flder, Basin Mdels, and a small watershed icn appears, as shwn belw, labeled Basin 1 Click n the watershed icn. This results in 3 changes n the screen: (i) it will make active the watershed creatin tls under the menu bar (t the right f the magnifying glass: Subbasin, Reach, Reservir, Junctin, Diversin, Surce, and Sink creatin tls); (ii) in the lwer left crner in the Cmpnent Editr, infrmatin mayy be input t the Basin Mdel; and (iii) the Basin Mdel template appears in the Desktp area. It is in this space that the basin mdel will be set up with the Watershed Creatin tls. 4

Refer t Example 5.1 fr details abut the watershed. HMS is flexible n hw yu may prefer t rganize steps in creating a mdel, s the steps belw are ne way t create a prject watershed and enter infrmatin and data. Adding 3 subbasins: Click n the Subbasin Creatin tl. Mve the cursr ver t the desktp area, and the pinter cursr shuld turn t a crsshairs fr placement f the subbasin. Click n the desktp area t place the subbasin, and a ppup will appear in which a subbasin name and descriptin may be input. Click Create when finished. A subbasin feature appears n the basin template. Repeat the steps fr the 2 remaining subbasins. Lcatin f the features added t the watershed withh the creatin tls may be changed by selecting the arrw tl, left clicking n the bject and dragging it t a different lcatin. Adding the 2 junctins: Click n the Junctin Creatin tl and mve the cursr ver t the Desktp area and place the 2 junctins n the watershed template. Add a channel reach fr the reach frm A t B. Click n the Reach Creatin Tl and place (by dragging) a reach in yur basin mdel desktp area. At this pint yu have the necessary cmpnents, but they need t be cnnected. Specifically subbasins 1 & 2 shuld be cnnected t Junctin 1 (at lcatin A) and Subbasin 3 t Junctin 2 (at lcatin B). Junctin 1 needs t be cnnected t the reach and the reach t junctin 2. Cnnecting the features is dne by selecting the arrw pinter and right clicking n the upstream bject (e.g.,, Subbasin 1) ; frm the menu, select Cnnect Dwnstream ; the cursr turns t crsshairs and cnnect Subbasin 1 t Junctin 1 dwnstream by clicking n the junctin. Similarly, cnnect the ther 2 subbasins and the reach t the apprpriate junctins, and junctin 1 t the reach. Once this is dne the reach shuld be a thicker blue line and the cnnectins shuld be thinner 5

black lines as indicated. Yu can mve the bjects arund the screen and by clicking n the labels, mve them t arrange the layut nicely Input basin infrmatin t elements f the watershed: T input infrmatin fr an element f the watershed, click n the element either in the cnceptual basin created in the Desktp area r in the Watershed Explrer. The apprpriate infrmatin input fields fr the particularr feature appear in the Cmpnent Editr in the lwer left crnerr Click n Subbasin 1. Initially, there are 5 tabs in the Cmpnent Editr (Left hand crner): Subbasin, Lss, Transfrm, Baseflw and Optins. Depending n the methds selected these tabs willl appear/disappear. Subbasin tab: The dwnstream pint is already filled, in since the cnnectinn was made in the Desktpp area but may als be entered r edited here. Enter the area. Change the lss methd t curve number.. Change the baseflw methd t nne. Check that the transfrmatin methd is Clark Unit Hydrgraph. Click n the lss tab and input SCS curve number frm page 335. Click n transfrm tab and Input TC and R frm page 335. Similarly, enter data fr Subbasin 2. Subbasin 3specified Unit Hydrgraph fr the Transfrm Methd. Until the hydrgraph infrmatin has been input, cells f Enter the area and set baseflw methd t 0. Sett lss methd and CN. This subbasin has a user the Transfrm tab are nt active. Input Unit Hydrgraph fr Subbasin 3: G t Cmpnents n the main menu at the tp, select Paired Data Manager,, Data Type: Scrll dwn and select Unit Hydrgraph Curves 6

Click New n the right prvide name and descriptin; then click Create In the Watershed Explrer, the flder, Paired Data was created; ; duble click t expand t the flder Unit Hydrgraph Curves, and duble click n the Unit Hydrgraph Curves flder t get the UH icn with the name it was given (eg, Pattern 1). Click n the Unit Hydrgraph icn t get the Paired Data Cmpnent Editr. Set the units and duratin. Switch t the Table tab and enter the Unit Hydrgraph data fr Subbasin 3 frm page 335. Nte the data entered are clred blue, indicating that the data are nt permanent. Save the file (ie, File, Save at the main menu), and the data turn frm blue t black, indicating that they are nw permanent. Select Subbasin 3 in the Watershed Manager: Under the Transfrm tab in the Cmpnent Editr, select the UH pattern (eg, Pattern) t use fr Subbasin 3 in simulatins. Reach 1: Reach tab: Input infrmatin frm page Ruting tab: Muskingum K and x, and 2 hw many subreaches the reach is split 335 fr Muskingum Ruting subreaches (2 subreachess is smewhat arbitrary and indicates in t). Input Hyetgraph: In Cmpnents n the main menu at the tp, select Time Series Data Manager, Data Type: Select Precipitatin gage, click n New, prvide name and descriptin, and click Create. And clse. A flder, Time Series Data,, is added t the Watershed Manager. Expand in sequence t Precipitatin Gages, then Gage 1, 7

Under Gage 1 is a strm event with a generic date. Click n the strm event t enter hyetgraph data and infrmatin. Fill in infrmatin n the fllwing tabs: Time Seriess Gage, Time Windw, and Table Time Series Gage tab: Units = Incremental inches, and Time Interval = 1 Hr Time Windw: define the time windw t include time fr the precipitatin event. Table tab: Hurly time increments shuld be n the left side f the table fr the perid defined under the Time Windw tab. Enter hurly precipitatin increments interpreted frm the precipitatin plt in Fig. E5 1(b) in the text. At the end f the precipitatinn event, input zeres fr the remaining time increments. Save the file. Under Cmpnent n the Main menu, select Meterlgic Mdel Manager, click New; fill in name and descriptin, and click Create. As befre, a flder, Meterlgic Mdels is added t the Basin 1 tab, schematic in the Watershed Explrer. Expand the flder ut t Met 1 In the Cmpnent editr, under the Meterlgy Mdel Under Precipitatin, select Specified Hyetgraph Under Units System, select the units t be used. 8

Basins tab: the basin mdel t be used already be identified n the left side f the table, and n the right, under the clumn heading, Include Subbasins,, select Yes, since it is assumed that precipitatinn is distributed unifrmly ver the basin. Frm Met 1 in the Watershed Explrer, duble click n the raindrps icn fr Specified Hyetgraph and assign a precipitatin gage t each subbasin (in this case, the same ne t the 3 subbasins). Save the prject, since it s a gd habit. 9

Mdel Cntrl Specificatins: Under Cmpnents, select Cntrl Specificatins Manager, and click New. Add name and descriptin, and click Create. A flder, Cntrl Specificatins is added t the Basin 1 schematic in the Watershed Explrer. Expand the flder ut t Cntrl 1, click n it, and fill in the infrmatin in the Cmpnent Editr area. Define the time windw t include time fr the rainfall as well as the runff respnse (I went t 20 June 1983, 24:00). Save the prject. Running Simulatins and Viewing Results (an example f nee methd): Main Menu: Select Cmpute, then select Create a Simulatin Run Create a simulatin run with a name, which can be described after it is created; there are 4 steps: 1 st step: the name, click Next 2 nd step: select the basin mdel, then click Next 3 rd step: select a meterlgical mdel, then click Next 4 th step: lastly, select a cntrl specificatins s mdel, and click Finish Belw the Main Menu, right f the cmpnent creatin tls, is an buttn with a raindrp next t a red & yellw sun (the cmpute current fun buttn). Click it t run the simulatin. 10

A message bx appears saying that HEC HMS in building the basin mdel, appear in the message area belw the Desktpp area. is finished cmputing yur simulatin run; clse the message bx. Errrs in mdel runs, as well Viewing Results: Right f the Run Simulatin buttn, is a buttn table with a glbal, the Glbal Summary buttn. Clickk it t view a summary f simulatin results. 11

T view graphical and tabular results, g t the Watershed Explrer area and click n Basin Mdels flder, fr example, then g t the Cmpnent Editr area and click n the Results tab. Select the Run # f which yu want t review the results Output fr any cmpnent f the basin (eg, Subbasin 2, Reach 1, Junctin 2) may be bserved by clicking n the cmpnent & selecting the utput frmat type. Mre than 1 type may be viewed at nce. 12
