Daily Debrief Dear Brainiacs, Maps almost always have to be drawn smaller than the actual area of land. All the things on the map are shrunken by the same amount when the map is drawn. To find out how much smaller the map is than the actual thing we have to look at the scale of the map. The map scale tells us how much larger the actual thing is than the map. The scale on the map of the park is listed in the legend. Map scale is used to measure on a map to distance in the There are two ways to measure map scale. The most precise way is with a ruler or piece of paper. You mark off the lines and then make your measurement. But what if you don t have a ruler or extra paper? You can use the knuckle trick to make an measurement, which means close but not perfect. 2

Here is an example of a map scale 1. How many inches long is this map scale? 2. Distances in inches will the be the distances you find on the map or real world? (circle one) 3. How many miles are represented by this map scale? 4. Distances in miles will be the distances you will find on the map or real world (circle one) 5. On this map 1 inch = mile(s) in the real world 6. If you measure the distance between two cities on the map and the distance was 27 inches on the map, the distance in the real world would be miles 7. If you know that the distance between two cities on the map is 300 miles, these two cities would be inches apart on the map. Step 1 Draw a line between the two points (point to point). Mark the distance of the scale bar on your index card. 3

Step 2 Place the card on the map and make a mark every time you go the distance. Repeat this process until you reach your destination. Step 3 You should be left with a series of marks along your map. You can now multiply the number of marks with the distance of your scale. The last mark you made will tell you the real distance you need to travel. 4
