The sailors try to keep the boat from sinking.

The Storm Hurry, hurry! The sailors had to shout over the noise of the storm. We are near the island. Take in the sails! We better not sink! Antonio, the Duke of Milan, shouted to the sailors. King Alonso of Naples is on this boat. The storm does not care about the king, said a sailor. If we could stop the storm, we would. You don t know what you are doing, the Duke said. Stay out of our way! said the sailor. You are helping the storm! They heard a noise from under the boat. Water is coming in! All is lost! All is lost! shouted the sailors. The boat began to sink into the dark water. **** On the island, Miranda heard their cry. Father, she asked, did your magic bring this storm? I wish I could help those people. I know you care about them, said Prospero. They are all fine. It is a trick. I made it look as if their boat went down. Prospero walked to their little cell on the hill. Take my magic robe from me, he said to Miranda. Then, Prospero put his robe on the ground. Miranda sat next to him. I never told you who we are or where we came from, Prospero said. This cell is our home now. But we could have much more. You see, I am the Duke of Milan. Prospero told her that twelve years before, they lived in Milan. Miranda was not yet three. Prospero wanted more time to read his books. He let his brother Antonio do some of his work. Then he let Antonio do all of his work. Soon Prospero did not know what was going on in Milan. Antonio wanted to be the Duke of Milan. He could not be the duke as long as Prospero lived. Antonio went to King Alonso and said he would give money to the king each year. The king said he would help Antonio to be Duke. One night, King Alonso SC 201-1 of Naples and his men took over Milan. They put Prospero and Miranda into an old boat far out on the water. The boat did not have sails. Prospero did not know where they were or where they were going. They were all alone. My brother did not want us to live, said Prospero. But a man named Gonzalo helped us. He put things to eat, good water, and my books in the boat. Prospero put on his robe again. If Gonzalo had not helped us, we could not have made it to this island. What does this have to do with the storm? asked Miranda. My brother and the king were on the boat that sank. They jumped into the water. They will be here soon, Prospero said. What will you do with them? asked Miranda. The time is right for my magic. I must do something now. If I don t, my work will come to nothing, said Prospero. You will sleep now Miranda. Under his magic, she went to sleep. 9

Prospero calls for Ariel.

Ariel Ariel, Prospero called. I am ready for you! Here I am, said Ariel. The spirit flew down to Prospero. What do you wish? Do you want me to take a new shape? I can be a bird in the air or a fish in the water. Did you become the tempest as I asked you to? asked Prospero. I blew in like a cold dark storm, the spirit said. My feet were balls of blue fire. Faster and faster, I jumped from the sails to the boat and back again. The king s men could not hear each other over the noise I made. Good, Ariel, said Prospero. No one could think with that going on. As the boat began to sink, the king s men did not want to be trapped, said Ariel. They had to swim. Ferdinand, one of the king s children, was the first to swim. He thinks no one came after him. But the king and his men did find their way to the island. They think Ferdinand did not come out of the water. Did you hide the boat? Are all the people okay? Prospero asked. The boat is far from the king s men and ready to sail when you wish, said Ariel. The sailors are on the boat where they belong. I made them sleep. They are without a care. The king and his men have all made it to the island. We have much more work before us, said Prospero. More work? asked Ariel. You hand out work as if it is nothing. But you don t give me the one thing I want. I don t like it when you talk this way, said Prospero. Ariel would not stop. You said you would free me. I watch over you and Miranda day and night. I do each new thing you ask. No spirit could serve you better than I have. The time has come for you to let me go! Who did you belong to before me? shouted Prospero. SC 201-2 Ariel looked down at the ground. Sycorax, the witch, he said. Her own people brought Sycorax to the island. They did not want her near them, Prospero said. When you could not serve her black magic, she trapped you in a tree for years. You could not free yourself, and Sycorax was not living by that time, said Prospero. Caliban, the thing that called her Mother, would never know how to help you. He is more of an animal than a man. You found me, and your good magic let me out, said Ariel. Thank you. I will not ask again. You will be free, just not now, said Prospero. Hide yourself so that no one can see you. Watch over the king and his people. Take the other spirits with you if you can t do it alone. You will know when to come back. Go! Faster than a bird, Ariel flew through the air and was gone. 15
