Noxious Weeds of Sublette County Dyer s woad Long, smooth edged, grayish leaves that are mostly basal Bright yellow, small 4 petal flowers clustered at top for plant Musk thistle Biennial Large tipping pink/purple flowers Can grow to up to 6 feet tall
Perennial pepperweed Perennial that can be 6 feet tall Numerous, small white flowers Leaves are glossy Very invasive in riparian areas and irrigated meadows Very aggressive root system May be poisonous in hay Perennial pepperweed is the most invasive noxious weed in Sublette County. It is usually found in wet areas but can be found in dry areas, along roadsides, and in both disturbed and undisturbed sites. It is a very aggressive invader in riparian areas and has invaded hundreds of acres along the Green River.
Early Detection and Rapid Response (EDRR) Sublette County Weed and Pest strongly promotes EDRR, the process of actively searching for new weed invaders, assessing their risk potential and responding immediately with an appropriate control. New weed invaders are weeds not known to be found in Sublette County except for in isolated and containable infestations with high potential for control. SCWP needs your help watching for these new invaders. The following are some that are on our most wanted list. Oxeye daisy White flowers with yellow center Toothed leaves Likes wet meadows and escapes from ornamental plantings Austrian fieldcress Yellow flowers with 4 petals Toothed leaved Perennial creeping roots Likes wet areas Found in New Fork River drainage

Cooperative Projects Green River Basin Weed Management Area Sublette County Weed and Pest along with our partners are working with landowners to form watershed based weed workgroups. The workgroups will manage weeds as if there are no fences! The idea is to get neighbors working together to reduce spread, control weeds, gain education of tools to be used for weed management, and to prevent new introductions. Currently, workgroups are established in the Piney Creeks area and along the Green River. Other groups in the Daniel and Boulder areas will spend this summer surveying what weeds they have and planning for next year. We will have several cooperative spray days this summer. Please contact the SCWP if you would like more information!!!!! Sublette County Invasive Species Taskforce In 2010, the Invasive Species Taskforce was formed to help better understand the extent of weed problems in Sublette County. The taskforce membership has interested parties from the SCWP, BLM, NRCS, SCCD, WGFD, industry and private landowners. The taskforce has focused on cheatgrass in the last year. Above is a map of known cheatgrass infestations and projects.
Lawn and Garden Russian thistle Also known as tumble weed Annual that breaks off Grows in disturbed or open areas Seedling look like a fleshy grass Older plants will have purple stem and prickles Need to treat when plants are young KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PLANTING The four plants pictured below have beautiful flowers but are Designated Noxious Weeds in Wyoming! yellow toadflax Oxeye daisy purple loosestrife common tansy Many noxious weeds were introduced into the USA as ornamental plantings. Each year new plants are introduced. Many of these plants are beautiful. When purchasing plants for your garden be leery of plants that naturally colonize, spread rapidly by roots and have many seeds. Not only may these plants be troublesome or weedy on your yards but they may spread to our natural areas!!!
Insects Please bring your samples of insects, plant damage or plants to SCWP for identification! Contact us and we can come to your property and consult at no charge. Biological Control Agent When foreign weeds are introduced, they come without co-evolved enemies that are present in their native ranges. Without these natural checks, the weeds are able to out-compete native vegetation. Introducing biological control agents can restore these natural checks and balances. SCWP uses this form of weed control in areas that are too sensitive for chemical control and in areas with limited access. Mecinus janthinus is an insect we use on yellow and Dalmatian toadflax. Starting in June females lay a single egg per chewed out cavity in the toadflax stems and seal the hole with a cap of chewed material. When the eggs hatch the larvae tunnel into the stem, increasing the size and length of the tunnel as they grow. After about a month the larvae stop tunneling and pupate into a new adult. These new adults remain inside the stem during the winter. Snow cover helps the dormant adults inside the stems survive the freezing temperatures of winter. Starting as early as May, these new adults chew their way out of the stem, feed, and in June-July start laying eggs. Adult feeding does substantial damage to the leaves. An attacked plant exhibits leaves with "buckshot" holes. The larval stem tunneling disrupts the food transport system between the roots and the leaves. Mountain Pine Beetle Many ornamental and forest trees in Sublette County have been damaged by the pine beetle. There are chemical preventions, such as pheromones and insecticides, available to treat small areas. Pheromone packs can be placed on trees to give the beetles a signal that the tree is full and can not accommodate more beetles. These packs are preventative and do not work 100% of the time. They should be placed on trees every spring before the beetles fly, no later than the first week of June. Preventative insecticides are also available for purchase and must be sprayed 360 degrees around the tree trunk and from the ground up until the truck is smaller than 6 inches. Grasshoppers In 2011 there were a few areas with high grasshopper numbers, but none that reached treatment levels. It is essential to implement a grasshopper control program early since timing is critical for control. Look often and early for very small (size of a rice grain) grasshopper nymphs in your rangelands.
