Adult supervision required activity Bake Halloween biscuits 1 Create your very own spooky ghost, bat and pumpkin biscuits especially for Halloween. Try out this simple recipe to create your scary treats. Less than 30 mins preparation time 10 to 30 mins baking time Makes 6-8 biscuits Ingredients 100g/3½oz of Unsalted butter (softened at room temperature) 100g/3½oz of caster sugar 1 free-range egg (lightly beaten) 275g/10oz of plain flour 1 tsp of vanilla extract To decorate 400g/14oz of icing sugar 3-4 tbsp of water 2-3 drops of food colouring 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Preparation method Preheat the oven to 190c/375f/Gas Mark 5. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl until combined. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, a little at a time, until well combined. Stir in the flour until the mixture comes together as a dough. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured work surface to a thickness of 1cm/½in. Using Halloween-themed biscuit cutters, cut biscuits out of the dough and carefully place onto the baking tray. Bake the biscuits for 8-10 minutes, or until pale golden brown. Set aside to harden for 5 minutes, then cool on a wire rack. For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a large mixing bowl and stir in enough water to create a smooth mixture. Stir in the food colouring. Carefully decorate your biscuits with icing and set aside until the icing hardens.

Adult supervision required activity Halloween finger printing 3 Have a go at this activity to get children involved in Halloween and create their very own spooky print. 1 2 3 4 Instructions Paint an area on a wipeable flat surface slightly smaller than your paper. With your finger, draw a scary Halloween picture in the paint. (Ghosts or haunted houses work well in white paint, and witches in green) Carefully press down your paper on top of the paint, making sure that you don t move so your picture doesn t smudge. Lift up your paper and leave to dry. Materials A wipeable flat surface Coloured paints Black paper Have fun creating your finger print pictures, we had a lot of fun making ours! Adult supervision required activity 4 Make your own felt ghosts and pumpkins Instructions 1 2 Cut out one of our templates of either a ghost or pumpkin. Lay this onto your felt and draw round the template twice0, and then carefully cut out. (Remember you will need two of each, one for the front and one for the back) Now you have your felt shapes it s time to thread your needle and sew both templates together around the edge. Don t forget to leave a small gap at the bottom to stuff your ghost or pumpkin. You may want an adult to help you do this 3 Once your felt shapes are sewn together now fill then with cotton wool and sew up the gap 4 Glue or sew on buttons, eyes and gems to create faces Now you have your felt ghost or pumpkin! Things That Go Bump In The Night 7 Can you write a tale in just 250 words that packs in thrills and chills? From a spooky ghost story or a mystery to a suspense-ridden tale, we re inviting young writers aged 7 to 18 years to enter our spooktacular ghost story writing competition! Your story could have a twist can the mysterious event be explained? Was it just a Halloween prank? You could try writing a mini saga, it s a story in just 100 words! You could write the opening chapter of your ghostly novel, or re-tell a classic ghost story in a modern way. Make sure your story has a beginning, middle and end. Think about your plot a ghost story is spooky, eerie, with suspense and atmosphere what was that noise? Who put that there? What lurks in the darkness?
