OVERVIEW The Electromagnetics Simulation Laboratory focuses on equipping students of Electrical Engineering with the most fundamental and yet most significant simulation tool MATLAB, with particular emphasis laid on its applications to solve problems related to electromagnetics field theory. The lab sessions are designed to explore the power of MATLAB to solve Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) using Finite Element Method (FEM). By solving a number of PDEs including those of Electrostatics, Magnetostatics, Electromagnetics and Conductive Media, students learn how to represent and boundary value problems in MATLAB-Partial Differential Equation Toolbox and concepts like Dirichlet, Neumann and Mixed Boundary Conditions. 3-D Plot of Saddle Function

Research in ESL today is focused on four major themes: MAJOR RESEARCH THEMES HIGH FREQUENCY MODELLING OF ELECTRICAL MACHINES The general topic is high frequency modeling of power transformers. The contributions in this work relates to different topics such as; Frequency-dependent iron core representation in FEM, study of interlaminar currents and its effect on the internal magnetic field, characterization of high frequency dielectric properties of impregnated pressboard and service-aged impregnated paper, procedure for evaluation of internal/external overvoltages, and finally sensitivity guidelines for the application of FRA (Frequency Response Analysis) to mechanical deformations. SCATTERING THEORY APPLICATIONS Special emphasis is laid on the applications of scattering theory in the field of biomedical imaging. We are investigating the scattering of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) radiofrequency (RF) field by implants for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and the resultant heating of the tissue surrounding the DBS electrodes. COMPUTATIONAL ELECTROMAGNETICS To develop and improve numerical techniques to solve integral and partial differential equations including Finite Element Method (FEM), Finite Difference in Time Domain (FDTD) and Method of Moments (MOM)

Core ESL research facilities and offices are located in the Electrical Engineering Department. ESL principal investigators also have offices and laboratories in other UET locations, including PCB Laboratory. The associated laboratories are Microwaves Laboratory, TLAP Laboratory and Wireless Communication Laboratory. FACILITIES: All ESL associated labs are equipped with Intel Core2Duo desktop computers having softwares including MATLAB, High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) and Advanced Design System (ADS). The testing facilities include Spectrum Analyzer, Vector Network Analyzer, Digital Oscilloscope, Signal Generators and Anechoic Chamber (Under Construction)
SPONSORSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS The wide range of ESL research efforts are supported by the most diverse sponsor base at UET. Principal sponsors of ESL research include: Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan Pak Elektron Limited (PEL) Syed Bhais Pvt. Ltd Quaid-E-Azam University, Islamabad. Purdue University, MRI Scattering Research Group Georgia Institute of Technology, Electromagnetics Research Group Moreover, a significant share of ESL activities is self-funded from gifts and from the discretionary resources of the Laboratory, its directors and its principal investigators. Approximately a third of ESL s activities involve collaborations outside of UET with universities, institutions, and industry, making ESL one of the principal points of UET connection with peer institutions, government, and the business world.
