Seasons Earth s Seasons

Months of Each Season http://www.brainpop.com/science/weather /seasons/

Earth s Axis The earth is tilted on its axis 23.5 o. This means that some parts of the earth will receive more sunlight that other parts. The earth also revolves around the sun. So the amount of sunlight that the northern and southern hemispheres receive will change throughout the year.

The Earth s tilt on its axis and its orbit around the Sun cause the Seasons.

Why do we have Seasons? Rotation: spinning motion of an object around it s axis Revolution: the movement of one object around another object. Tilt of Earth s Axis: 23.5 degrees

Why does the Earth s tilt impact the seasons? Sunlight hits the hemisphere that is tilted towards the sun MORE DIRECTLY. This is why the hemisphere tilted toward the sun experiences summer SUN

CFU! What season is it in the Northern Hemisphere? N S SUN

Why does the Earth s tilt impact the seasons? Sunlight hits the hemisphere that is tilted away the sun LESS DIRECTLY. This is why the hemisphere tilted away the sun experiences winter. SUN

CFU! What season is it in the Northern Hemisphere? N SUN S

Power Knowledge & Skills: Summer Solstice Approximate Date: June 21 st The longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The artic is in nonstop sunlight. Antarctica nonstop darkness. This day marks the beginning of summer.

Power Knowledge & Skills: Winter Solstice Approximate Date: December 21 st The longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The artic is in nonstop darkness. Antarctica nonstop sunlight. This day marks the beginning of winter.

Power Knowledge & Skills: Autumn Equinox Approximate Date: September 22 nd Everywhere on Earth gets 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. This day marks the beginning of autumn. After this day, the nights begin to get longer than the days in the Northern Hemisphere.

Power Knowledge & Skills: Vernal Equinox Approximate Date: March 21 st Everywhere on Earth gets 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. This day marks the beginning of spring. After this day, the nights begin to get shorter than the days in the Northern Hemisphere.

The length of days Days are longer during the summer because the hemisphere is titled toward the sun this hemisphere receives MORE sunlight. Days are shorter during the winter because the hemisphere is titled away from the sun this hemisphere receives LESS sunlight.

Brain Pop Questions: Seasons 1. What causes seasons? 2. If it is winter in the northern hemisphere, what season would it be in the southern hemisphere?

Meteorologist Projects Presented on Friday! You and your team are meteorologists that need to read through your scenario and prepare a weather forecast for the week complete with a weather map and weekly forecaster. In groups you will get a weather scenario that explain what it looks like outside. You will go through your checklist one by one answering questions, getting teacher signature, and creating maps/weekly forecasts. Everyone must participate and be part of the drawing/creating and the weatherman forecast presentation You will be graded based on the Rubric on the back of your
