NWC-SAF: General Backgraound Background: According to the Decision of the 29th Council of EUMETSAT, the Agreement of Co-operation of a Satellite Application Facility on support to Nowcasting/ and Very Short-Range Forecasting was signed by EUMETSAT and INM in December 1996. The project started in February 1997 aiming to produce the Software to deal with the Nowcasting and VSRF using the characteristics of the MSG SEVIRI data and the NOAA and EPS AVHRR data. Slide 3
NWC-SAF: General Background General Objectives: The general objective of the SAFNWC is to provide operational services to ensure the optimum use of meteorological satellite data in Nowcasting and Very Short Range Forecasting by targeted users. This is applicable to the MSG and the PPS satellite systems. To achieve this goal, the SAFNWC is responsible for the development and maintenance of appropriate SW Packages, as well as of all related tasks for user's support. Moreover, the SAFNWC intends to be a Centre of Excellence for Nowcasting in EUMETSAT. Konsortium: Slide 4
Software Distribution Concept All current National Meteorological Services within the EUMETSAT Member States and Co-operating States and those who in a future shall become EUMETSAT Member States or Co-operating States, will be automatically considered potential users. Any other Organisation may apply to become a user through the Leading Entity (emailing to NWC SAF Manager mafernandeza@aemet.es and asanchezp@aemet.es). Decision will be taken by the Nowcasting SAF according to the EUMETSAT Data Policy affecting the Nowcasting SAF and will be communicated to the intended user accordingly. Source code is distributed and can be modified (e.g. for research type of use) For locally installed software, the (locally available) model fields are used as background information Reference system runs at AEMET (MSG) and SMHI, using ECMWF model fields Slide 5

Outlook In CDOP-2 it is planned to extend the present MSG package to other GEO satellites: For v2015: MSG and other GEO satellites (depending on product): e.g. Himawari-8, GOES-R, GOES-N (more products slowly being added in the next versions) Slide 11
EUMETSAT Activities: EARS Service Metop and NOAA satellite data are acquired locally by a network of AHRPT stations, located within the North Atlantic, Europe and Indian Ocean regions. These data are then, typically, processed by local processing nodes before being relayed to EUMETSAT for onward distribution to the user, either via EUMETCast or the Global Telecommunication System (GTS). The purpose of the regional service is to provide the European meteorological community with sounder, imager and scatterometer data, covering data-sparse areas, within 30 minutes of the instrument observations. The improved timeliness of regional data assists in earlier forecasting EARS stations with installed NWC-SAF software (polar package): Products are Cloud Mask Cloud Type Cloud Top Temperature and Height Slide 12
EUMETSAT Activities: GEO Package The NWC-SF GEO package is run locally at EUMETSAT, covering the entire MSG disk, to extract the products Cloud Mask Cloud Type Cloud Top Temperature and Height with the intention to disseminate these products via EUMETCast Africa to the African User Community (planned for 2014) Slide 13
