TEXT ON SLIDES Use Keywords and bullet points Have a title on every slide Use questions to frame distinct t sections Use summaries often Do not use big long sentences that you are going to read word for word to your audience who already finishedi reading it before you started. Now your audience is thinking about other things, like dinner and do not really care about what you have to say. It also clutters up the slide and is really bad when slide after slide it looks like this.

PRESENTATION LAYOUT TELL A STORY! BE ORGANIZED AND AWARE Return to the main question often to frame each part of the talk

PRESENTATION POINTERS Break up the talk into sections Provide a defined question or hypothesis for each new set of results Use simple transition slides that t cue you to address a specific point or question Provide a brief summary of each section Use figures, diagrams and animations to make your points Keep figures simple Break up a complex figure into smaller parts (separate the A, B, C parts)

PRESENTATION POINTERS Know the level of the audience When in doubt set the bar lower Jargon Keep everything simple Avoid excessive jargon and acronyms ****provide a handout if there are lots of acronyms***** Keep all slide transitions THE SAME!!!

PRESENTATION LAYOUT TALK AROUND AND BETWEEN THE SLIDES The aural component should drive the seminar NOT the text on the slides

PRESENTATION LAYOUT BE SURE TO HAVE AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT SLIDE You can NEVER win if you slight someone Err on the side of being conservative in listing those that participated in ANY way to what is being presented

QUESTIONS

PRESENTATION POINTERS Bring your own equipment if possible Bring backups for the talk (jump drive, CD, etc) Save files in older formats (ppt and pptx) Preview talk on the system you are going to use to check for format issues (MAC vs PC changes) Dress professionally

PRESENTATION POINTERS Practice the talk!!!!!! (in the same room if possible) Know how long the presentation is going to take and what your time limits are Take out or consolidate slides if you feel you may go over Place additional slides you might want to use to answer any questions AFTER your last slide

PRESENTATION POINTERS Speak slowly, clearly, and LOUDLY!!!! Ask if people can hear you Always use a microphone if it is available Make eye contact and do not read your slides with your back to the audience. Move around if possible (different sides of the room) No Umm, Like, OK, You know, Again Avoid premature pointer and laser light show

PRESENTATION POINTERS Show some enthusiasm and excitement for your work!!!! Be aware that no one should know the data better than you do!! If you don t know, SAY YOU DON T KNOW. NEVER EVER TRY AND FOOL THE AUDIENCE! Relax and have fun (if presenting is a horror you are in Relax and have fun (if presenting is a horror, you are in big trouble)

FINAL COMMENTS No matter how good you think youare, youcanalways get better and pick up something new from any talk (even if it is to reinforce what NOT to do!) The more you speak, the better you get Everyone gets nervous before they speak
