Sun Safety Poem Here s a catchy little poem to learn the importance of sun safety. When it's hot outside and you can see the sun, All you want to do is have some fun. But we have to remember to keep ourselves protected, Because the sun can harm us even when we least expect it. It can make us feel poorly and harm our skin, So we should listen to our teacher and take it all in. But don't feel scared though, the sun is still our friend, As long as we keep ourselves covered, the friendship will never end. Just remember this saying and sing along: Sun cream, hats and canopies will keep us cool all day long, If we play under the shade, we really can't go wrong. Trees, sunglasses and cool clothes will also do the job, Remember to keep covered and play won't have to stop. Write Your Own Poem Hi I m Shade Man, did you enjoy that poem? Now it s your turn to write a poem of your own about playing in the sun and keeping safe. Work as a team with your friends, it can be as long or short as you wish. 2

Design Your Own Sun Hat Use the template of a sun hat below to colour in and draw your own designs on it to make your very own hat. Psst. it s Shade Man here, did you know that we should wear hats in the sun as they keep your head cool by creating a layer between our heads and the sun. The peak on the front also creates shade above our face, keeping our face cool. 4

Looking After Others In The Sun We ve talked about how important it is to keep ourselves safe in the sun but we have to remember to look after others too. This is because, if we are feeling thirsty, we can simply ask our parents or teacher for a drink however, the wildlife in our gardens and playgrounds are not able to do this. Wildlife such as birds, bees and hedgehogs have to search for their water. That s why its important that we also think of others and leave water out for the animals such as bird baths for birds to drink from and bowls on the floor for cats, hedgehogs and foxes. If you are growing plants or vegetables at home or at school then you will also need to water them more regularly than usual on hot, sunny days. What can you do to help the wildlife where you live keep hydrated? List your ideas below. 6
Sun Bingo Teachers and parents will need to help with this one. You will find four different sun bingo cards overleaf, split the class into four groups so there is one card to each group. Then, cut out the cards below and randomly select a card at a time and call out the picture you see. Just like regular bingo, when each group notices that they have the image you called out, they need to mark it off and call BINGO when they have a full house (all images on their card). You can choose small prizes for the winners or simply play just for fun! Shade Search If it s not currently sunny outside then save this game for a nice, sunny day. Take this activity pack outside with you and note down in the space below everywhere that you find shaded areas where you can go to cool down. Try to find as many areas as you can and draw pictures of what is creating the shade. Top Tip: Look around for trees, tall buildings, canopies, play equipment and tall plants 9
Sun Facts Do you know that... The Sun is just one of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. The Sun is 4.5 billion years old. All living things on Earth including humans are dependent on the sun to stay alive. Sunscreen is only 1 level of sun protection, its important to also wear sun glasses, hats and gain shade and shelter. You should try to remember to water your flowers and plants more often and leave water out for wildlife. After applying sunscreen, you should wait 20 to 30 minutes for it to dry before going outside. The Sun is huge, you can fit over one million Earths inside the Sun. The sun can still burn you through glass so it s always best to keep some sunscreen around in case you need it such as in the car. If you go swimming after applying sun screen, you will need to apply more once you ve been swimming as the water washes it off. The Sun is strongest between 11am and 3pm and you should therefore spend more time in the shade between these times. The sun is also good for us, it provides us with vitamin D which helps us absorb Calcium which keeps our bones healthy. The Sun is 400 times larger than the moon and 400 times farther away from the Earth, making them look like they are the same size. When its hot outside you should always wear sun protection and keep covered. On hotter days you should drink more water to keep yourself hydrated. You still need to gain protection from the sun on cloudy days as 80% of the sun s rays can pass through clouds and fog. The Sun is 150 million km from the Earth. 10
