Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA Andrei Nikiforov DESY on behalf of the H1 and ZEUS collaborations Moriond QCD, La Thuile, 13 March 2008 Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 1 / 21

The HERA Collider HERA is a unique ep collider. Located at DESY, Hamburg Two collider experiments HERA II: after luminosity and detector upgrade in 2000-2002 820 GeV, 1992-1998 920 GeV, 1998-2007 HERA operation: E e = 27.5 GeV, E p = 460 GeV, 3-5 / 2007 575 GeV, 5-6 / 2007 Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 2 / 21

Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA Neutral Current DIS: e ± p e ± X Kinematics: Q 2 = (k k ) 2 = q 2 virtuality of γ, Z 0 x = Q 2 /2(Pq) momentum fraction of proton carried by struck quark y = (Pq)/(Pk) inelasticity Q 2 = sxy Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) is best suited tool for Measurement of the substructure of the proton: quark and gluon content (PDFs) Testing QCD dynamics: validity of DGLAP evolution equations at low Q 2 and low x Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 3 / 21

Structure Functions F 2 and F L At low Q 2 DIS cross section can be written via structure functions F 2 and F L : d 2 σ ep dxdq 2 = 2πα2 Y + Q 4 x (F 2 (x, Q 2 ) y 2 Y + F L (x, Q 2 )), Y + = 1 + (1 y) 2 reduced cross section: σ r = Q4 x 2πα 2 Y + d 2 σ ep dxdq 2 = F 2 y 2 Y + F L F 2 is dominant (σ r F 2 ) F 2 = x eq(q 2 + q) Sensitive to 4u + d Gluon PDF extraction from scaling violation of F 2 : F 2 ln Q 2 F L is sizable only at high y xg F L = 0 in QPM Direct sensitivity to gluons at low x QCD: F L = α 1 s 4π x 2 dz x z 3 [16 3 F 2 + 8 q e 2 q(1 x z )zg(z)] Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 4 / 21

Neutral Current Cross Sections New preliminary H1 and ZEUS combined results (submitted to EPS07, Manchester) 1.5-3% precision data 5 decades in x 5 decades in Q 2 Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 5 / 21

Lowest Q 2 Region Transition to non-perturbative region Q 2 0 is of theoretical interest The lowest Q 2 < 10 GeV 2 region is accessed using specialised techniques to detect scattered lepton at very small angles: Shifted collision vertex to increase acceptance at lowest Q 2 (H1) Events with tagged (ZEUS) or untagged (H1) Initial State Radiation Special low angle calorimeter + tracker (BPT, ZEUS) Minimum Bias Trigger data + Backward Silicon Tracker (H1) Shifted vertex BST event (H1) at low Q 2 = 2.7 GeV 2 and x = 0.0003 Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 6 / 21

Lowest Q 2 Data New precision of preliminary H1 data: 1.5% for Q 2 > 5 GeV 2 σγ eff p, effective virtual γ p cross section: σ eff γ p = σ T + [1 f (y)]σ L H1 combined data cover the gap between published ZEUS results and agree with them in regions of overlap Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 7 / 21

The High y Measurements Results are interesting because of sensitivity to F L Analysis in the high y > 0.6 region especially challenging: difficult to identify the scattered lepton with low E e and high γp background H1 and ZEUS have released the preliminary high y results: σ r = F 2 y 2 Y + F L y 1 E e E e ZEUS: Measurement uses γp MC for BG subtraction, can be studied using tagged events. Analysis down E e = 5 GeV and up to y = 0.8 H1: Background determined directly from data using the track charge. Analysis down to E e = 3.3 GeV and up to y = 0.9 Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 8 / 21

The High y Results x = Q2 sy First measurement at high y by ZEUS, covers the whole kinematic range, at higher Q 2 statistics limited H1 uncertainties improved by a factor 2 over former publication (hep-ex/0012053), total errors 2-3% Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 9 / 21

Indirect F L Extraction Extrapolate F 2 from the low y region to the high y F L : Compare σ r with extrapolated F 2 F L F 2 σ r Strong model dependence Drawback: extraction of F L requires assumption on F 2 Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 10 / 21

Direct Measurement of F L by H1 Collaboration Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 11 / 21

Direct F L Measurement Direct measurement of F L can be performed by measuring cross section for the same (x, Q 2 ) but with different centre mass energies s (different y): σ r = F 2 (x, Q 2 ) y 2 Y + F L (x, Q 2 ) Higher y at low s Larger difference of y 2 Y + Better F L precision Use 2007 e + p data of different p-beam energy runs For same x, Q 2 : low s high y corresponds to high s low y E p Lumi 460 GeV 12.4 pb 1 575 GeV 6.2 pb 1 920 GeV 21.9 pb 1 Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 12 / 21

Analysis Strategy Electron method: Qe 2 = 4E e E e cos 2 ( θe 2 ) y e = 1 E e E e sin 2 ( θe 2 ) x e = Q2 e sy e Scattered electron produces isolated and compact energy deposition Identified using shape and size of e/m shower profile High Y Low Y High background contribution Require track link, higher R SpaCal Estimate background from wrong charged tracks Background free area R SpaCal > 20 cm. Do not require track match γp MC to estimate residual background Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 13 / 21

Background Determination At high y there is a large photoproduction background in which hadronic final state can mimic the signature of the scattered lepton with low energy Background is measured using data events with the charge opposite to lepton beam charge A small charge asymmetry ( 5%) at low energies is generated by the difference of pa and pa cross sections Background charge asymmetry is determined using e + p and e p 2003-07 data N signal = N + kn Charge asymmetry factor: k = N+ bkg N bkg Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 14 / 21

Low y Control Plots: E p = 920 Data Low background contribution Good control on the e/m and hadronic energy scales Electron energy (E e), scattering angle (θ e ), etc. are well described by MC Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 15 / 21

High y Control Plots E p = 460 Data E p = 575 Data Good description of the data by MC Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 16 / 21

Double Differential Cross Sections Same Q 2, x range, different CME different y ranges y = Q 2 /(xs) lower s higher y σ r turns over at low x due to F L Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 17 / 21

F L Extraction σ r = F 2 y 2 1+(1 y) 2 F L Linear fit to points of different s Slope determines F L Intercept at y = 0 gives F 2 E p = 575 data: cross check of γp background control additional x bins Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 18 / 21

F L Structure Function First direct measurement F L (x, Q 2 ) at low x at HERA Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 19 / 21

F L Structure Function in Averaged x Bins F L predicted by higher order QCD using gluon that was derived from scaling violations of F 2 is consistent with the measurement Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 20 / 21

Summary HERA performs precision measurements of the proton structure New results on inclusive measurements at lowest Q 2 and in the high inelasticity y domain First direct measurement of F L at HERA has been presented, based on data taken in 2007 Measured F L is in agreement with higher order QCD expectations, based on HERA low x measurements of the scaling violations of F 2 The extension of the measurement to the lower and higher Q 2 regions is expected using other detection capabilities of H1. ZEUS measurement is also in progress. Novel precision measurements at HERA will improve the proton structure understanding... and prepare LHC era Andrei Nikiforov DESY Measurements of the Proton F L and F 2 Structure Functions at Low x at HERA 21 / 21
