Dear Student and Parent/Guardian, The math department at George Ranch High School wants you to be successful in Algebra I PAP. We also want you to be prepared for the STAAR Algebra I exam. This summer packet is designed to help you reach these goals by reviewing necessary skills. Be sure to follow the key information below when completing this packet: The packet is due on the first day of school when you return in August. Every problem must be completed. None left blank. Do not wait until the last minute to complete the packet. There are over 200 problems. Correct and complete work must be shown neatly to receive credit no work, no credit. Show the work on the packet pages. Do NOT add additional pages. Final answers must be shown on the numbered blanks provided (on the side or bottom) for each worksheet. The packet will count towards your minor and major grade for the 1 st 6 weeks. A quiz covering the material from the packet will be given within the first two weeks of school. These topics also tie in with the first few units of Algebra I. All topics covered in the packet should be completed without the aid of a calculator. Integer Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division BASIC DEFINITIONS: INTEGERS Positive and Negative numbers (and zero) whose decimal digits are zeros. ABSOLUTE VALUE Distance from zero on a number line. OPPOSITES Two numbers the same distance from zero on a number line but on different sides of zero. INTEGER ADDITION: - Do the integers have the same sign? YES -ADD their absolute values -Keep the common sign absolute value. EXPONENTS Exponents show repeated multiplication in shorthand form. An exponent tells us how many times to multiply the base by itself. ORDER OF OPERATIONS An order has been agreed upon to which operations are performed before others. Several shortcut ways to remember this ranking system have been developed, with most popular being PEMDAS, or Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.
