Finding the Books on the Library Web Site There are several ways to find the books on the Library web site. One way is to use the ebooks list, find the book you want and open it, just as you would in a print library stacks. If you know the title, you can use the alphabet to drill down. If you are interested in seeing all of the books on a topic or subject/specialty, use the drop boxes at the top to filter the list. Filter by Topic or Subject/ Sprcialty Click on the book title to open the book Notice the different Providers or vendors of the books We subscribe to hundreds of medical books. The trick to using them is becoming familiar with the interfaces that the different vendors use so that you can quickly locate the chapters and paragraphs you need. Each vendor site has a different, but similar interface. F L O R I D A S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y C O L L E G E O F M E D I C I N E 3
Don t Hog the Limited Users Books The E-Books list will note if a book has a limited number of simultaneous users in parenthesis after the publisher. Note below the two books that indicate that they are Single User and the book in WebMD that only allows 5 simultaneous users. If there is no number of users indicated, it means that there is unlimited access. When you need to use one of these limited user books, find the chapter you need quickly then copy and paste the chapter or pages you need into a Word document or print out the parts you need. When you are finished, Log Out. If you forget and leave the window open, and do not log out, you will likely be blocking some one else from using the resource. Printing or Saving a Chapter/Section You may print small sections of the ebooks for your personal use 1. Find the section you need 2. Click on the Print View/Preview button. This opens the content in a window without all the navigation showing and usually replaces thumbnail images with full size images. 3. Then use the browser print function to print out the contents of that window OR 4. Select all of the contents of this window by hitting CTRL-A 5. Right Click on the window and select Copy, or use CTRL-C 6. Open Word and get a new blank document. 7. Under the Edit Menu, the Standard Toolbar or right click and select Paste, or hit CTRL-V. 8. Then Save the Document giving it a name you can remember. F L O R I D A S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y C O L L E G E O F M E D I C I N E 4
Searching for E-Books E Under Search Engines To Search for a book title, pick the E-Books tab in the Search Engines box on the top right side of the Library site. Below is the results of the search at right. These are the two books with the word adolescent in the title. If you are unsure which book you need, and you have a specific topic you are looking for, another option is to search all at E-Books one time using a tool that the Maguire Library licenses called System 360. This resource is still in development, but we feel you will be amazed at what it can do for you. If you are off -campus and not logged into EZProxy, when you click on Multi-Search you will be redirected to EZProxy and forced to log in. Use single word searches if possible for the best success. Change Title to ALL, if you want to look into the Table of Contents. Results are categorized by topic and by source. Links go into the resource and give you choices of chapters. Click Refine Search to get into an advanced search interface. F L O R I D A S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y C O L L E G E O F M E D I C I N E 5

Learning to Use an E-Book E Interface The FSU Maguire Medicine Library subscribes to hundreds of quality medical books in electronic format. Combine that with the several thousand medical books that the FSU Library system has through ebrary, the number is considerable. Most of our books are in seven commercial sites: MDConsult, OVID, Wiley, American Psych, Thieme, Access Medicine and Thieme. There are also a large number of quality, familiar medical texts that are available free online, such as the Merck Manual and Gray s Anatomy listed on our E-Books list. The trick to using these is to become familiar with the way the book is organized to be read or referenced online. This is called the web site interface. When you are looking at a book online, think about the way you browse a book in print format. Some of you are Table of Contents flippers, and some of you are Index divers. The Table of Contents is usually set up for you so that you can still browse the book. Some interfaces have Indexes and some don t. In most interfaces you can search a book, which is very much like looking in an Index. of the interfaces allow you to search either the selected book or all the books in the site. You need to become comfortable with the common interfaces, especially at MDConsult, Access Medicine, and OVID as these are our major suppliers of clinical medical textbooks. MDConsult s E-Books E Interface MDConsult has the best e-book interface of all the publisher s web sites. A floating box at the left of the screen lets you browse by contents or index by selecting the desired tab. You can search either This Book, all E-Books, or the vast resources in MDConsult and FirstConsult. The Print Version window works well. OvidSP Interface OVID lets you search either the current book or all the books in OVID. OVID s interface places the Index at the bottom of the Contents navigation pane on the left side of the screen. Access Medicine s E-Books E Interface While this interface has few bells and whistles, the content in Access Medicine s E -Books distinguishes itself by being constantly updated. There is no index in the book interface, so you are stuck either using the Table of Contents, or doing an Advanced Search where you can specify the book you wish to search. Chapters are opened in another window, with the chapter sections provided for navigation on the left. You can choose to print either the section or the chapter, and this brings up your selection with images in full size. F L O R I D A S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y C O L L E G E O F M E D I C I N E 11
