Why Argon? Inert since need to avoid anything electronegative In pure argon, ionization electrons can drift long distances (metres) Good dielectric properties, supports high-voltages/fields: 500 V/cm An excellent scintillator (128 nm) and transparent at this wavelength Argon is cheap and readily available (1% of atmosphere) 28 1/6/2017 Mark Thomson DUNE
