Bellwork 3/11/2013 How many protons does a neutral carbon atom have? Electrons? Valence electrons? Neutrons? Homework SYNC ipads!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read ibooks Ch. 9 Chemistry of Carbon Sec. 1 Properties of Carbon Explain the difference between graphite and diamonds Quiz 3/12 (801) and 3/15 (800) on Ch8, S1 & S2 (organic chemistry) Chemistry Unit Exam: March 21st Chapters 1-8
How many bonds can a single carbon atom form? How does this compare to N, O, and H? How many protons does Carbon-14 have? Electrons? Neutrons? Draw the valence electron dot diagram that would result from one C and four H coming together? What type of bonding is this?
Carbon present? Yes or No Carbon compounds are Plastic Propane Wooden desk Chunk of gold Your body Hydrochloric acid everywhere
Compounds with Carbon = Organic Compounds If it doesn t have carbon Organic cmpds usually don t dissolve in water and are liquids or gases at room temperature
Hydrocarbons Examples? Methane, ethane, propane What elements do you think make up hydrocarbons? What are two properties that all three examples have in common? Do not mix with water Flammable What are hydrocarbons used for? If all hydrocarbons are made of the same elements, what makes them different from each other? Structural vs. chemical formula
What do you know about diamonds? Strong, nonreactive, only thing that can scratch a diamond is another diamond, does not melt easily, also used as drills, etc. What do you know about graphite? Found in pencils, reduces friction b/c layers slide past each other (could use as a lubricant) try rubbing two pieces of paper together that are covered in graphite Other forms nanotubes and fullerenes Try to make each of these using ball and stick model Based on your models, why do you think diamond is the strongest?
Three different arrangements of carbon atoms Straight Branched Ring
Methane: CH 4 Ethane: C 2 H 6 Propane: C 3 H 8 These are all straight chains What would they look like? (Model) Draw your model on paper. (Structural formula)
Butane/Isobutane: C 4 H 10 Butane straight chain Isobutane branched chain Isomers same chemical formula, different structural formula Different properties
Hydrocarbons can form single, double, or triple bonds Model each of these and determine the number of bonds between the carbon atoms C 2 H 6 C 2 H 4 C 2 H 2 C 3 H 8 C 3 H 4 C 4 H 10
What does saturated mean? Unsaturated? How do you think this relates to hydrocarbons? Go back to your models and determine which are saturated and which are unsaturated. C 2 H 6 C 2 H 4 C 2 H 2 C 3 H 8 C 3 H 4 C 4 H 10
Model and then draw a structural formula for a hydrocarbon that has five carbon atoms and is saturated. Now model and then draw a structural formula for a hydrocarbon that has five carbon atoms and is unsaturated. Challenge: Model and draw an isomer of each!
You can make substituted hydrocarbons by switching out a hydrogen for something else. 1. Alcohols H OH CH 4 CH 3 OH Methane Methanol Model this. Do you think methanol will dissolve better, worse, or the same in water compared to methane?
2. Alcohols H OH C 2 H 6 C 2 H 5 OH Ethane Ethanol Model this.
Bellwork 3/12/2013 1. What are three ways carbon atoms can be arranged? Draw an example of each. Homework Worksheet Carbon Compounds Read ibooks Ch. 9 Sec. 2 Hydrocarbons Define carbon, organic compounds, hydrocarbons, structure of hydrocarbons, saturated and unsaturated, substituted hydrocarbons, polymers Quiz 3/15 (800) on Ch8, S1 & S2 (organic chemistry) Test Chapters 1-8 March 21
Polymers Large organic molecule made of many chains of smaller molecules (monomers) Organic compounds can be chemically bonded together to form chains hundreds or thousands monomers long in repeating patterns Natural and synthetic polymers
Make a model of a polymer of all the same monomers with each type of object representing a monomer. Now make a model of a polymer with two types of monomers. Three types. Remember, the pattern must be repeating! What element is in all monomers?
Synthetic Polymers Pg 278-279 Invention of some synthetic polymers What characteristics do these synthetic polymers have that their natural versions do not? What is a disadvantage to all of these synthetic polymers?
Bellwork 3/12/2013 or 3/15/2013 1. What is the difference between butane and isobutane? Are butane and isobutane the same substance? 2. Are the carbons in C 2 H 6 single bonded or double bonded? 3. Draw the structural formula for the substituted hydrocarbon of C 2 H 5 OH. Homework -Review for Final UOS #9/work on study guide -Test Covering chemistry topics (Chaps 1-8) March 21

Wool from sheep, cotton from plants, cellulose from plants, silk from silkworms, proteins from living things 15. Starch is digested; cellulose is not 17. Carbon can form 4 bonds with other carbons; can also make straight chains, branched, and rings
18. B saturated because has single bond and as max number of H bonds; A unsaturated because has double bond and fewer hydrogen atoms for each carbon 21. IGNORE 22. 3 23. Yes. Isomers same chemical; different structural formulas 24. Different properties because their molecules are arranged differently 25. IGNORE
