M ISSION ARLINGTON MISSION METROPLEX LESSON 30 Old Testament Samuel I Samuel 3 Memory Verse: Blessed are those who hear God's word and obey it. (Luke 11:28 NIrV) Goals 1. Understand that Samuel served God. 2. Learn that Samuel was taught by Eli, the priest. 3. Understand that Eli recognized God s call. 4. Recognize that God told Samuel what would happen in the future. Last week we learned that Hannah prayed for a son. As she was praying, Eli, the priest, misjudged Hannah. He thought she was drunk. She explained her anguish. God was faithful and answered Hannah s prayer. Read the Bible READ: I Samuel 3:9-20 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Begin With Prayer Hannah promised God that she would let him live at the church so that he could serve God his whole life. Samuel grew and Hannah kept her promise by sending Samuel to live at the church. He lived with the preacher named Eli. Eli taught Samuel how to serve God. (I Samuel 1:24-28) Hannah loved Samuel and knew that God would care for her son at the church. God blessed her with five more children. She still loved Samuel and visited him often. (I Samuel 2:19-21) Samuel served God with Eli s help. One night Samuel heard someone calling his name. He thought it was Eli. He jumped up out of bed and ran to see what Eli wanted. Eli told him that he didn t call him. (I Samuel 3:1-5) Again Samuel heard someone calling his name. He ran to see what Eli wanted. Eli told him that he hadn t called him. (I Samuel 3:6) A third time Samuel heard the voice and went to Eli. Eli had not called. Suddenly, Eli realized that GOD was calling Samuel. Eli told Samuel to listen again for the voice. When he heard it, he must say, I am here, God. I am listening. (I Samuel 3:7-9) Sure enough, the voice called and Samuel told God, I am here, God. I am listening. (I Samuel 3:10) God talked to Samuel and told him things that were going to happen. (I Samuel 3:11-14) Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 30 Page 2

Samuel Bible Facts 1. Samuel lived with Eli the priest. 2. He heard God s voice. 3. Eli told Samuel to say, I am here, God. I am listening. 4. God told Samuel what was about to happen. Samuel trusted God and listened to His voice. People everywhere knew that Samuel loved God and God spoke to people through Samuel. God calls us too. He doesn t use a loudspeaker or a telephone. It is a heart feeling that tells us to trust Him and ask Jesus to come into our lives. We have a choice to say what Samuel said, I am here, God. I am listening. We can listen and obey God too. Review 1. Where did Samuel live? (Samuel lived with Eli the priest.) 2. What happened to Samuel? (He heard God s voice.) 3. What did Eli tell Samuel to do when he heard the voice? (Eli told Samuel to say, I am here, God. I am listening. ) 4. What happened next? (God told Samuel what was about to happen.) Do You Know Jesus? We can know God personally. In order for that to happen we must see that we have done wrong (sin) and tell Him about it (confess). We must believe that Jesus died and came back to life so that we can live. We must ask Jesus into our lives. (Romans 10:9-10) Then God will help us do what God wants us to do like reading our Bibles, praying, inviting people to church, and doing what is right. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus. 3. Ask God to help you hear His voice and obey Him. 4. Pray for friends and family members who need to hear God s voice and obey Him. Application Samuel served God. He was taught by Eli, the priest. One night Samuel heard a voice three times. Each time Samuel went to Eli, he instructed Samuel to go to bed. But then Eli recognized it was God calling Samuel. Eli told Samuel what to say. God told Samuel what would happen in the future. Preschool Lesson Read the Bible READ: I Samuel 3:9-20 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Teachers: Play Telephone, Have the children sit in a circle. Someone starts by whispering something. The children tell each other what they heard in a whisper. The end result will be Last week we learned how God blessed Hannah and gave her a child. She promised that he would stay at the church when he got older. Hannah s baby was named Samuel. Samuel grew and Hannah kept her promise by sending Samuel to live at the church. He lived with the preacher named Eli. Samuel helped Eli in the church. One night Samuel heard someone calling his name. (Whisper the name Samuel ) He thought it was Eli. He jumped up out of bed and ran to see what Eli wanted. Eli told him that he didn t call him. Again Samuel heard someone calling his name. (Whisper the name Samuel ) He ran to see what Eli wanted. Memory verse for younger children Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 30 Page 4

Learning Activities Memory verse activity Create a grid on a poster. Have the children who can write take turns writing the next word of the memory verse in the grid. Have the smaller children write one letter of the reference. Create grids on paper that the children can use to copy the verse. Make some with the verse on it for the children who cannot read or write. Test your memory Create a grid of pictures that can help you tell the story. Attach the pictures to the grid as you tell the story. Ask the children to retell the story. Taste activity Bring cookies for the children. Think about it God called Samuel and told him what would happen. Talk about the responsibility we have with the truth we know. Samuel was Eli s helper. Talk about things you can do to help others. Samuel was afraid to tell Eli what God told him. Talk about how sometimes it is best not to say anything. Touch activity Make big ears out of construction paper. Make a pillow using construction paper. Decorate two pieces of construction paper. Glue the two pieces of construction paper together. Leave an opening at the top. Fill it with cotton balls and then glue the top. Bring two towels. Let two children lie down and pretend to be Samuel and Eli. Let them act out the story as you tell it. Play Telephone, Have the children sit in a circle. Someone starts by whispering something. The children tell each other what they heard in a whisper. The end result will be interesting. Run and play Have the children form several teams (at least two). Have the children stand in two rows apart from each other. Then have one child call the name of a child in the other row. Ask the child whose name was called to identify the person who called his name. Have the children sit in groups. Tell them to talk about how they respond when certain people are calling (mom, dad, grandparent, Bible study leader, policeman, etc.) Play Simon Says. Listen As the children take time for silence, remind them that God wants us to hear and obey. Sing Sing Standing on the Promises, Have Faith in God, or another song related to the story. Reach out During class, pray (by name) for kids that did not come today. Ask the children to go with you to deliver the handouts to those who were absent. Play the encouraging game and say the memory verse. Encourage them to read the story in the Bible. Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 30 Page 5
