What are the phases of the moon? KEY TERMS phases: the changing pattern of light and dark on the moon as viewed from Earth waning: after the full moon; as the visible part of the moon decreases waxin after a new moon; as the visible art of the moon increases 97

S ON 17 What the ages The moon does not give off its own light like the sun does. It shines by reflected light. The sun shines on the moon. The moon then reflects this light from the sun to our eyes. You can often see the moon shining brightly on a clear night. Sometimes you can see the moon during the day. But from night to night, the moon seems to change its shape. The different shapes the moon seems to have are called phases [FAYZ-uz]. Figure A shows the phases. If you look at the moon every night, you will notice that the phases always follow one another in the same order. First the moon may look like a large white disk. Then it seems to shrink and disappear only to start "growing" again. Why does the moon seem to change shape? The moon revolves, or orbits, around the Earth. One orbit takes about 27 1/3 days. During this time, about half of the moon is always lit up. But, most of the time we cannot see all this light. How much moonlight we see depends upon where the moon is in its orbit. At full moon, we see all of the lit side. At new moon, we see none of the lit side. At all other phases, we see part of the lit side. 98

UNDERSTANDING THE MOON'S PHASES Figure A shows the moon in orbit. Study it and then answer the questions or fill in the blanks below. First Quarter Waxing Gibbous Waxing Crescent 6 P.M. Light Noon from Full Moon 6 A.M. 0 New Moon Sun Waning Gibbous Waning Crescent Third Quarter Figure A The side of the moon facing the sun is always lit up. But we cannot see all of this lit up area every night. The boxes show how the moon looks to us from the Earth. Notice how its shape seems to change during the orbit. 1. What do we call the different shapes the moon seems to have? 2. Where does the moon get its light? 3. How much of the moon is always bright? 4. Can we see all this light every night? 5. At which phase can we see all of the lighted half of the Moon? 99

6. At which phase can we see none of the lighted half of the moon? 7. At which phases can we see one-half of the lighted half of the moon? 8. At which phases can we see less than one-half of the lighted part of the moon? 9. At which phases can we see more than one-half, but not all of the lighted half of the moon? 10. At new moon, the lighted half of the moon faces the Earth. towards, away from 11. At full moon, the lighted half of the moon faces the Earth. towards, away from 12. Between new moon and full moon, the lit portion of the moon seems to grow, shrink in size. 13. Between full moon and new moon, the lit portion of the moon seems to grow, shrink in size. 14.
