L A B S LAB 29: DON T BE PUSHY Date: BACKGROUND Humans have three different types f muscle tissue. Each kind is specialized fr the wrk it must d. OBJECTIVE T bserve striated, smth and cardiac muscle differences. MATERIALS micrscpe prepared slide, 3 muscle types clred pencils Lab Reprt frms Results, Micrscpy (3) Cnclusin PROCEDURE 1. Set up the micrscpe as detailed in the Using the Micrscpe sectin f this study guide. Turn n the bttm (transmitted) light and adjust the aperture t the widest pening. Rtate t the 4x bjective. 2. Place the prepared muscle slide nt the stage. Yur slide cntains three types f muscle specimens. Read the rest f the steps utlined belw and lk at all three specimens befre prceeding. 3. Find the striated muscle. The cells f striated muscle are very thin and lng. They have multiple nuclei which are arranged near the edges f the cell. What distinguishes striated muscle cells frm the smth muscle cells is the presence f striatins which 2010 Classical Educatin Resurces, LLC. All rights reserved. ~ 169 ~

L A B S lk like stripes that run acrss the cell (the shrt way). These cells are specialized t allw vluntary mvement f the muscles. Draw what yu see using yur clred pencils n ne f the Results, Micrscpy frms. 4. Next, lk fr the smth muscle. Smth muscle cells are smewhat elngated. Smth muscle cells have nly ne nucleus per cell, which is generally f an val shape. Mst imprtantly, they exhibit a cmplete lack f striatins. Draw the smth muscle cells yu viewed n anther Results, Micrscpy frm. 5. Finally, find the cardiac muscle specimen. Cardiac muscle cntains sme f the features f smth muscles and sme f striated muscles. These cells have multiple nuclei and sme striatins acrss the cell. They will als display sme dark bands that lk like very wide striatins. These are the intercalated discs that jin the ends f the cardiac muscle cells tgether. Draw what yu see, and label ne cell s nuclei, striatins and intercalated bands. 6. On the Cnclusin frm explain the differences yu bserved between the three types f muscle cells. 2010 Classical Educatin Resurces, LLC. All rights reserved. ~ 170 ~
