Gordon III Deaprtment of Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science Program * The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802 Wroton abstraction doping has been demonstrated as a viable alternate procedure for the synthesis of electrically conductive polymers through the preparation of poly(pphenylene pentadienylene).-4hich when doped displayed a conductivity of 10-1 S/cm. i+additional-proce used for the synthesis of proton abstraction doping precursors includes sulfur ylide and Grignard condensations, details will be presented. These systems offer tremendous advantages for the study of effects arising from dopant density and conjugation length in organic conductors. This work reports our ongoing research into an H S I alternative synthetic procedure for the preparation of electrically conductive polymers, by proton abstraction "doping". it can easily be seen that identical charge delocalized + systems can be prepared through either reduction of an NaOH CtSH) all-conjugated polymer or through proton abstraction from a 5 K> polymer whose conjugated sequence lengths are interrupted by relatively acidic methylene moieties, figure 1. 6 +2e-- 6 - - CH jchch-4 7 FIGURE 3 H H HH -_ > Ct3C _CZK -C2M 8 Prtnabstraction has been cofre sa viable technique 8 QH OH through the synthesis of poly(p-phenylene pentedienylene) and its doping by treatment with n-buli. Preliminary 9 electrical measurements fr the dark blue/black solid showed a conductivity of 5.OxlO S/cm. A many polymeric structures applicable to proton 9 ~ -- abstraction doping my be proposed. Synthetic routes being -CHHC, pursued in our laboratory include Wittig, sulfur ylide and 10 Grignard condensations. A Wittig procedure was used for the synthesis of poly(p-phenylene pantadienylene) (3), figure 2. FIGURJ 4.,5-Diphenylpentadiene (2), an analogous low molecular,.crwp,,h, Cr THF PhP=CCHP4PPh, weight model, displays a conductivity of S/c. upon proton abstraction doping to form the 1,5-diphenylpentadienyl anion. This is comparable to conductivity meesurements on arene Sradical cation salts norms I to the stack direction of the aromatic rings (1-10S/cm). Enhancid conductivities pmh -isle parallel to the stack direction (10 S/cm) suggest that 2 orientation of the most probably amorphous 1,5-diphenylpantadienyl anion should lead to enhanced conductivities. In conclusion, additional synthetic schemes for the?,q.h J-0 preparation of proton abstraction developed doping as precursors supplements are to the being previously developed Wittig -c-ph 3 procedure. The ability to control the nature and location of the dopant site makes these systems versatile subjects for future studies.
