It is essential for you to know n The cell cycle is a repeated pattern of growth and division that occurs in eukaryotic cells. n The cell cycle has three phases: Interphase, Mitosis, and Cytokinesis

Why do cells not grow forever? n Living things grow by producing more cells. n Cells do not grow indefinitely: n DNA overload n Too many demands on the DNA n Problems exchanging materials n Surface area determines the rate at which food, oxygen, and water enter a cell and wastes leave a cell. n The rate at which food and oxygen are used up and wastes produced is determined by the volume of the cell.

The Solution n Cells divide rather than grow indefinitely. n Cells divide to become 2 daughter cells before it becomes too large. n This is called cell division. n 1 st the cell replicates, or copies, its DNA n Each daughter cell gets a complete set of DNA n Each daughter cell has an increased ratio of SA to Volume for efficient exchange of materials.

Chromosomes n Genetic info is carried by chromosomes. n Chromosomes are made up of DNA and protein. n Histones are the proteins that help maintain the shape of the chromosome.

Chromosomes n Chromosomes are usually only visible during cell division. They condense into compact, visible structures. n NOT present in prokaryotes no nucleus nor as much DNA needed.

Chromosomes n Before cell division, each chromosome is replicated (copies itself). n Once they replicate and condense, they become sister chromatids and are attached to one another in the center, called the centromere.

Chromosomes n Each species has a characteristic number of chromosomes found in each cell. n Humans have 46 whereas flys have 8. n Human and animal chromosomes are categorized as either sex chromosomes or autosomes. n A karyotype is a picture of all the chromosomes of an organisms, with their homologous pairs.

Chromosomes Sex Chromosomes Autosomes n Determine the sex of an organism n In humans, sex chromosomes are either X or Y. n XY is for males n XX is for female n Only 2 of the human chromosomes n Any chromosome that is NOT a sex chromosome n Consists of the other 44 chromosomes n Each organism has 2 copies of autosomes n One from mom, one from dad n Are considered homologous chromosomes

The Cell Cycle and Mitosis n n n The cell cycle is the series of events that eukaryotic cells go through as they divide and grow. Mitosis (body cells) or meiosis (sex cells) These events can be divided into 2 main parts: 1. Interphase is the period between cell divisions when the cell grows and replicates DNA and Organelles. Consists of G 1, S, and G 2. 2. Mitotic Phase is when the cell is actually dividing its chromosomes and cytoplasm. Consists of Mitosis and Cytokinesis.

Interphase n Interphase can be long, but the actual cell division is quick. n Interphase: G 1, S, and G 2 n G 1 phase: cell does most of its growing in size and synthesizes (makes) new proteins n S phase: chromosomes are replicated, DNA synthesis occurs, key proteins are synthesized, and cell is committed to enter mitosis n G 2 phase: after DNA replication, usually the shortest of the three parts, cell is now ready to divide

Interphase n Sometimes a cell will exit the cell cycle, usually from G 1 phase and enter what is known as G 0. In this phase, cells are alive and active, but will not continue on to eventually divide. Cells like heart muscle, eye and brain. If damaged, they cannot be replaced.

Mitotic Phase (M-Phase) n Mitosis and Cytokinesis n 4 phases of mitosis: n Prophase n Metaphase n Anaphase n Telophase n May last a few minutes or several days. n Results in GENETICALLY IDENTICAL cells. n NOT in prokaryotes (no nucleus)

Mitosis n Prophase n First and longest phase of mitosis n Takes 50-60% of the time n Chromosomes become visible n Centrioles separate to opposite sides of nucleus. n Centrioles lie in centrosome and help organize the spindle which helps separate the chromosomes.

Mitosis n Metaphase n 2 nd phase of mitosis n Chromosomes line up across the center of the cell. n Microtubules connect centromeres to poles of the spindle fibers.

Mitosis n Anaphase n 3 rd phase of mitosis n Centromeres separate allowing sister chromatids to separate and become individual chromosomes. n Chromosomes move apart until they have separated into 2 groups near the poles of the spindle. n Ends when the chromosomes stop moving.

Mitosis n Telophase n 4 th phase of mitosis n Chromosomes disperse into a tangle of dense material. n Nuclear envelope reforms around each cluster of chromosomes. n Spindle begins to break apart. n Nucleolus becomes visible in each daughter nucleus. n Mitosis is complete.

Cytokinesis n In animal cells, the cell membrane is pinched inward, forming a cleavage furrow. n In plants, a cell plate forms midway between the nuclei which gradually develops into a cell wall.

Cell Division in Prokaryotes n Binary fission n The prokaryotic cells DNA is copied and the cell splits into two cells. n The offspring is a genetic copy of the parent.
