Name Date Daily Common Core Practice Plants have unusual ways of surviving in extreme temperatures. These passages tell about how coniferous trees survive throughout the year. DAY ONE Coniferous trees have leaves that are shaped like needles. They differ from hardwood trees which have broad, flat leaves and usually without cones. The appearance of coniferous trees can be easily set apart from hardwood trees. Conifers usually keep foliage throughout the entire year. The structure of the needles is vital for survival during the harsher, cooler months. Needles limit evaporation so trees can conserve water. With slender leaves that limit surface area, a protective, outer wax, and a thicker skin which is key to maintaining moisture, coniferous trees such as pine, fir, and spruce trees are well-equipped to survive freezing weather conditions. Common Core Standard RI.8 Reasons and Evidence 1. In which way is needle structure important for coniferous tree survival? a. Their leaves give off more moisture for survival b. It makes it easier to distinguish them from hardwoods c. The shape and needle covering limits evaporation Common Core Standard RI.4 Vocabulary 2. What does foliage mean? a. several plants b. a cluster of leaves c. thick skin DAY TWO The taiga is covered with coniferous trees. It stretches over North America, Asia, and Europe. The taiga is located near the top of the planet, just below the tundra biome. Winters in this region are very cold. Coniferous trees within the taiga are widely spaced apart. This differs biomes that have deciduous trees. Broad, flat deciduous leaves catch a lot of light and can grow close together. Canopy shape and needle arrangement assist coniferous plants. The conical shape captures sunlight more efficiently than the rounded canopy of a deciduous tree and the needle leaf structure enables a conifer to maintain moisture when precipitation is low. Common Core Standard RI.1 Details 1. What assists with capturing sunlight? a. a cone shape b. the needle leaf structure c. growing close together Common Core Standard RI.5 Text Organization 2. What is the overall structure of the text? a. cause and effect b. classification c. comparison contrast Literacy and Math Ideas 2014
