.AN INDUCTIVE APPROACH TO THE PIROGOV-SINAI THEORY Roman Kotecký, David Prei93 The aim of thia note i3 to preaent an alternative approach to the Pirogov-Sinai theory concerning the deacription of phaae diagram3 of lattice ayatema [l\* Though our motivation ia to generalize the Pirogov-Sinai theory ao a9 to include another type of modela not covered by the original theory, vie uae the occaaion to preaent it here in the aimple9t form, namely exactly in the aituation conaidered by Pirogov and Sinai. Thia alao allowa ua to keep their notation. Actually vie ahall uae the notation from Sinai'a book \2\ 9 The 9ole exception i9 that vie prefer (mainly in view of future generalization) to conaider "nonrelative Hamiltonian" partition functiona 2,83 Z(P lft>, jo, Z (VlO related to theira [.2, Def.2.7, Z(r M =e-fi>)l Cl e (r l and Z (V (J!laO = e- a>h(h, )V'0 (Vld-aO, where we denoted C(P ) = aupp p (JInt P. Thua z(r l(yae) = e" R>( i )(r) Tyz m (int m r l) m with <$> related to Pirogov-Sinai'a H L 2» formula (2.41)1 < >(r ) = YC) + h(t )lr (. by We mill alao uae the re9ulta concerning contour modelg, egpecially Propoaition 2.3 from [2~], though vie do not need the Propoaition 2.5 about the boundary term of the parametric contour model partition function. The main atep in Pirogov-Sinai'a deacription of the phaae diagram at amall temperaturea ia to replace the model viith a Hamiltonian by auitable contour modela with parametera. Crucial in thia reapect ia their Propoaition 2.6 in [.2'], which aa9ert9 the existence of a vector of <T -f unctionala 1? =- (F-,... F ) and parameters b lf... b such that Q(r ls*> - ev (n) a(r lp ) for each P e C f =l,2 f... r and (i)

162 JR. KOTECKY, D. PREISS b = R> h) - s(p ) + * (2) with oc defined by min b = 0 ««r They prove the statement by rewriting (1) in the form of the euation F - G>V + T(P f to ) (3) and showing that the nonlinear operator T is a contraction in a suitably chosen complete metric space of vectors of contour functionals. Our aim here is to replace Proposition 2.6 in a more constructive way avoiding the use of the nonlinear euation (3). To this end we define for each bo the contour functional F by induction in lc(p ) so that z(r lfi>jx) bvrn) n, b e-feh(v )lc(p )l =e(r lf b ) (4) (note that (T lf b ) = e'vt] e'v with F b (3 ) defi- cmtr ned in the preceding steps of the induction). An immediate conseuence of this definition is the relation connecting the partition function of the model with the partition function of the contour model with parameter: Z (VlG!*> - e-vttcvlfjj.b) Observing that from (2) and the fact that min b = 0 it follows that ex. a sctfo, free energy of the Hamiltonian model, and noting that the free energy s(f ) exists (by a simple argument similar -_ to the usual proof) even when the contour functional F is not a T-functional with large T, it is natural to introduce the parameters b by b = supb\s(f b ) -&h() + b 4 s«k)}. (5) The importance of these particular values of parameters is seen from the following Proposition Let yc= Q + %k viith C 0 satisfying the Peierls 's stability condition with a constant Q>0 and let b be given by (5) for each =l f... r. Then for l\*3tl small enough and d large enough, and for each =l f... r we have (i) F are Y-functionals with r large enough (ii) t> - (3h(V ) - stfjj) + Bftt) (iii) min b = o I4mr m

INDUCTIVE APPROACH TO PIROGOV-SINAI THEORY 163 (iv) b and s(f) are Lipschitz functions of (V./3C with a small Lipschitz constant. To give a hint of the proof vie first introduce for each =l,... r and each bo the r-functional P by Defining now pj(r ) = max (P b (r ),r r l). b = supb a(p b ) -$h(h) + b a()\, we shall prove that F is a T-functional (i.e. that f = P Q ) and note that after showing this it is not difficult to show that b =b and thus that Pa is a T-functional. Thus we shall show by induction in lc(p)l that S (rlf il- 4.-tir. (6) «(IntP pj) (we skipped the superscript in T for simplicity). Using first (4) and observing that yvhttt) - e-h(\)\ V lqc(vlp b,b) 4 e(-hm) +b)1v(v F) we get 3C(r\pJ) - e-v (r) -(p)+(ih( % )v(r) TTz m (-nvnia) e-mkr)-b V(P)+$h(Y )V(r)TT e (-&M m Noting further that a(int m P\P) = U(Intmrb m) by the induction hypothesis; that _ *-. VPja) = 6«CPia>V n (r) +T(r)\Int m Pl with l?(t) 1$ e" since Pm and finally that is a T-functional; -& h <* m ) + \ + s(? m m) B s(} - "(Wig* +T + s(f S >' we get *(rlp) 4 -(ьф(p)-ь v(p)+h(ч' )v(p)ţг e (-fi > h(ҷ' m )+ь m )v ш (P) U ( I a t ю Гь ш ) г ш e"&ф(г)-ҳ 1 V(Г)+(SҺ(Ҷ' )V(P) + 'S(r)И ŢГV" fc h( V + V в( Ф ))V m (

164 R. KOTECKf, D. PREISS = e-((r)+-t(r)\--\+s(f ) )v(r) e-(r)+2 e ~lr(intrll*, = with the last eauality following again from the induction hypothesis. This, for (i large enough, implies (6). To prove (iii) one observes that if min b were positive, then there would exist >0 and parameters T? such that s(p ) - (ih(y ) +'b = s() - g, for each =l,... r. (7) H SL H Noting that P is again a T-functional (the proof is the same as above taking into account that one uses (7) in the form s(fj) ) -fih(y -fbmy ) + +bb - s(p m) - (?>h(y m ) + b m one gets a(pj) - 0h(r ) + b < in the contradiction to fl(tt-) s03o s(f) - fmi(y ) + b following from Z (V.6*) 4. e ( -ft h) + b ) v (vl) # REPERENCES 1.
