If f (x) > 0 at each point x (a,b), then f is increasing on [a,b]. If f (x) < 0 at each point x (a,b), then f is decreasing on [a,b]. Proof. Consider any x 1,x 2 [a,b] with x 1 < x 2. According to the mean value theorem for f on [x 1,x 2 ] we have f (x 2 ) f (x 1 ) = f (c)(x 2 x 1 ) for some c (x 1,x 2 ). Since x 2 x 1 > 0 (why?), the sign of the right hand side is the same as the sign of f (c). Hence, f (x 2 ) > f (x 1 ) if f > 0 on (a,b) and f (x 2 ) < f (x 1 ) if f < 0 on (a,b). R.
