INTRODUCTION Thank you for your purchase of a National microscope. It is a well built, precision instrument carefully checked to assure that it reaches you in good condition. It is designed for ease of operation and years of carefree use. The information in this manual probably far exceeds what you will need to know in order to operate and maintain your microscope. However, the manual is provided to answer questions, which might arise and to help you avoid any maintenance expense that may be unnecessary. UNPACKING The microscope and accessories have been carefully packed to assure they reach you in the best possible condition. The microscope has been packed in a plastic carrying case to facilitate storage of the microscope and accessories. Components packed within the carrying case are the stand, penlight illuminator, and two AA batteries. Carefully read this manual and familiarize yourself with the components and controls identified in the diagram provided. ASSEMBLY A. Penlight illuminator: Carefully remove push button switch and clip assembly from main penlight body tube by rotating in a counter clockwise direction. Remove and discard the plastic spacer tube. Insert two AA : batteries with positive terminal facing the light bulb. B. Install push button switch and clip assembly to main penlight body tube, rotate in a clockwise direction to lock in to position. C. Insert penlight illuminator into the chrome holder provided on the measuring microscope. OPERATION A. Focusing the microscope. 1. Position opening located in center of transparent base plate over specimen to be viewed. 2. Rotate focusing controls until specimen is in sharp focus. 3. If additional lighting is needed to illuminate the specimen, turn penlight illuminator on by pushing the on/off button located at rear of illuminator. Loosen knurled illuminator locking screw and direct light to center of specimen. Tighten locking screw to secure lamp into position. 4. To provide a crisp image of the eyepiece reticle scale, rotate the top black focusing eyepiece while holding the chrome knurled ring located directly below. The microscope has been shipped to you with the eyepiece adjustment at its lowest position, rotate counter clockwise to focus the reticle scale to your eyesight. B. 1. 20x direct reading scale model 186 a. Marked: The 0.3 linear scale has 100 graduations, each graduation equaling.003. Every tenth b. Example: Specimen size to be determined measures from 0 to number 5 plus 4 graduations on linear scale. Number 5 times 10 graduations equal 50 plus 4 graduations equal to 54 graduations. To determine actual specimen size multiply 54 graduations times.003 equal 0.162. a. Marked: The 6mm linear scale has 100 graduations, each graduation equaling 0.06mm. Every fifth b. Example: Specimen size to be determined measures from 0 to number 4 plus 2 graduations on linear scale. Number 4 times 5 graduations equal 20 plus 2 graduations equal to 22 graduations. To determine actual specimen size multiply 22 graduations times.06mm equal 1.32mm. 2. 40x direct reading scale model 187 a. Marked: The 0.15 linear scale has 100 graduations, each graduation equaling.0015. Every tenth b. Example: Specimen size to be determined measures from 0 to number 6 plus 4 graduations on linear scale. Number 6 times 10 graduations equal 60 plus 4 graduations equal to 64 graduations. To determine actual specimen size multiply 64 graduations times.0015 equal 0.096. a. Marked: The 3mm linear scale has 100 graduations, each graduation equaling.03mm. Every fifth b. Example: Specimen size to be determined measures from 0 to number 12 plus 3 graduations on linear scale. Number 12 times 5 graduations equal 60 plus 3 graduations equal to 63 graduations. To determine actual specimen size multiply 63 graduations times.03mm equal 1.89mm. 3. 60x direct reading scale model 188 a. Marked: The 0.1 linear scale has 100 graduations, each graduation equaling.001. Every tenth b. Example: Specimen size to be determined measures from 0 to number 8 plus 8 graduations on linear scale. Number 8 times 10 graduations equal 80 plus 8 graduations equal to 88 graduations. To determine actual specimen size multiply 88 graduations times.001 equal 0.088. a. Marked: The 2mm linear scale has 100 graduations, each graduation equaling 0.02mm. Every fifth b. Example: Specimen size to be determined measures from 0 to number 9 plus 1 graduation on linear scale. Number 9 times 5 graduations equal 45 plus 1 graduations equal to 46 divisions. To determine actual specimen size multiply 46 divisions times.02mm equal 0.92mm. 4

4. 100x direct reading scale model 189 a. Marked: The 0.05 linear scale has 100 graduations, each graduation equaling.0005. Every tenth b. Example: Specimen size to be determined measures from 0 to number 1 plus 6 graduations on linear scale. Number 1 times 10 graduations equal 10 plus 6 graduations equal to 16 graduations. To determine actual specimen size multiply 16 graduations times.0005 equal 0.008. a. Marked: The 1mm linear scale has 100 graduations, each graduation equaling 0.01mm. Every fifth b. Example: Specimen size to be determined measures from 0 to number 7 plus 3 graduations on linear scale. Number 7 times 5 graduations equal 35 plus 3 graduations equal to 38 divisions. To determine actual specimen size multiply 38 divisions times 0.01mm equal 0.38mm. MAINTENANCE A. OPTICAL MAINTENANCE 1. Do not attempt to disassemble any lens component. Consult an expert technical service company when repairs not covered by these instructions are required. 2. Prior to cleaning any lens surface, brush dust or dirt off lens surfaces using a camel hair brush. Or use air to blow dust and lint off surfaces. Use of compressed air in a can, available at any computer supply store, is a good source of clean air. 3. Cleaning eyepiece lenses. Do not remove eyepiece from eyepiece tube. Clean only the outer surface. Breathe on lens to dampen surface, then wipe with lens paper. Do not wipe lens surface while dry as lenses are scratched very easily. Wipe in a circular motion from center to outer edges. 4. Do not remove objective lens from microscope. Clean front lens element only. Using a cotton swab saturated with distilled water, clean front lens surface. Inspect the lens surface using a magnifying glass to insure that the element is clean. Removing and disassembling the objective lens will be detrimental to the measuring reliability of this microscope. B. ILLUMINATOR MAINTENANCE 1. Replacement of lamp. a. Remove penlight illuminator from penlight holder. b. Carefully remove push button switch and clip assembly from main penlight body by rotating in a counter clockwise direction. Remove the two AA batteries from main tube. c. Remove penlight bulb from main tube by pushing lamp into tube, carefully letting it drop out other end. d. Remove penlight bulb from socket adapter. e. Screw new penlight bulb into the socket adapter. f. Drop bulb and socket adapter into the body of the penlight illuminator, lamp facing out of front hole. g. Insert two AA batteries into the body of penlight illuminator. h. Install push button switch and clip assembly to body tube, rotate in a clockwise direction to lock into position. 5

i. Insert penlight illuminator into the holder provided on the measuring microscope. 2. Replacement of batteries. a. Remove penlight illuminator from penlight holder. b.
