What is formed by the digestion of starch? d ot all the substances that we eat or drink are good for our bodies. ame one substance that we can drink which may be harmful. 2 a By the side of each pair of magnets write whether they attract or repel each other. Page 1 of 7 2 Pearson Education Limited 2002

b Draw a pair of magnets where the force of repulsion between the magnets is greater than those shown above. athan was given three pieces of metal. Each was wrapped up in masking tape. He used a magnet to investigate each one. The first one was attracted to both the north and south poles of his magnet. The second one was attracted to the north pole but repelled by the south pole. The third one was not attracted or repelled by either pole of his magnet. c Which one was a piece of unmagnetised iron? d Draw the other part of the magnetic field around the bar magnet below. 3 The drawing shows the crust of the Earth around an ancient volcano. ancient volcano cone made of lava layer of basalt layers of sedimentary rock solidified magma Page 2 of 7 3 Pearson Education Limited 2002

a Where did the cone of lava come from? b What type of rock is basalt? Choose from: igneous metamorphic sedimentary c Mark on the diagram where each of the following might be found: i metamorphic rock write M granite write G i igneous rock containing the largest crystals write I. [3 marks] d Three layers of sedimentary rock are shown: upper, middle and lower. Which one is probably the oldest? 4 For a fuel to burn it has to be heated. a Complete the fire triangle to show what else is needed. Heat Fuel b To put out a fire one part of the fire triangle has to be removed. i Which part is removed when a hose pours water onto a fire? Which part is removed when carbon dioxide or foam is sprayed onto a fire? Page 3 of 7 4 Pearson Education Limited 2002

c What are the names of the compounds formed when each of the following burn in air? i carbon hydrogen i magnesium 5 eris was investigating the current in a circuit containing a number of switches, bulbs and ammeters. Do not show it emerging from the glass. 8 In 1953, tanley Miller and Harold Urey reproduced what it was like in the Earth s atmosphere millions of years ago. For a week they sparked lightning through a mixture of methane, ammonia, hydrogen and water vapour contained in a sealed flask. They found that four different amino acids were formed. Amino acids are molecules that join together to make protein, which is a building block of living things. a Which substance in the mixture is an element? b What is the source of energy for the chemical changes that occurred in the Earth s atmosphere in the sealed flask? c i What part of our diet could have been made in the Earth s atmosphere millions of years ago? Page 6 of 7 7 Pearson Education Limited 2002

Foundation Tier 3 6 Test (continued) tanley Miller and Harold Urey said that their experiment showed how life could have started on Earth millions of years ago. What group of substances is their evidence for this? In ancient times people believed that life could arise spontaneously, or from nothing living, such as maggots from dead animals and eels from the ooze of rivers. A famous experiment to show that life did not start out of nothing was done by Abbé Lazzaro pallanzani (1729 1799). He showed that if he boiled broth and sealed it from air, while it was boiling, bacteria never grew in it; but as soon as air was let in clumps of bacterial growth began to appear. Louis Pasteur (1822 1895) carefully repeated the experiments and confirmed that the cause of the clumps of bacterial growth was tiny bacteria getting in from the air. Until Pasteur repeated and confirmed pallanzani s experiments, the scientists of the time still thought that living bacteria spontaneously appeared from the chemicals in broth. d Originally it was argued that pallanzani s experiments were not reliable. What made them become reliable? e How could pallanzani s critics have used Miller and Urey s results to argue that pallanzani s conclusion was wrong? f Zacharias Jannsen invented the microscope in 1590. How could a powerful microscope have helped pallanzani to prove his conclusion? Page 7 of 7 8 Pearson Education Limited 2002
