Introduction: The word DEMON comes from the Greek word DAIMON which throughout the New Testament is translated either as devil or demon. The New Testament teaches us that devils are sometimes directly the cause of sin, sickness, disease, mental disorders etc. The New Testament also teaches that the ministry of deliverance, or exorcism, plays a vital part in the New Testament Church. (See Matt 10:1,7,8; Luke 10:1,17-20; Mark 16:12-20.) Let us commence our study by seeing who is our enemy. Temptation comes in 3 Areas Gen. 3:6 Mat. 4:1-11 1 Jn. 2:15-17 BODY Good for Food Stones made Bread Lust of the flesh SOUL Pleasant to the eye Make a Big display Lust of the eye SPIRIT Make one wise Worship me Pride of life Page 3 of 28

1. KNOW YOUR ENEMY 1.1 HIS FALL As the fall of Satan and his evil forces occurred before the creation of the Adamic race, it is not described in any detail in the Scriptures, but is referred to only in veiled and indirect ways. However, there are instances when the inspired prophets, addressing an earthly ruler, would break forth into language which can only refer to Satan as the unseen power behind the earthly ruler. Here are two examples: (a) Ezekiel 28:1-19 Here the prophecy is addressed primarily to the King of Tyre, and yet language is used which could only apply to Satan as the unseen power behind the King of Tyre. Note particularly verses 13-15. (b) Isaiah 14:4-23 Here the prophet is addressing the King of Babylon and foretelling the judgments about to befall him. But, as we read verses 12-15, we see an obvious reference to Lucifer, the fallen archangel, or Satan. Actually, the Lord is, through the prophets, identifying the power behind these earthly rulers, for it was Satan who expressed his own spirit through these men, causing them to exalt themselves in rebellion against God, only to be overthrown by the justice and power of God. It is held by some scholars that Satan was once ruler of a pre- Adamic race which existed between verses 1 and 2 of Genesis chapter 1. Jeremiah 4:23-26 would appear to refer to the desolation of the earth following God s judgment on a pre- Adamic race. Note particularly verse 23, cf Genesis 1:2. Isaiah 45:18 shows that God did not create the earth without form and void, but to be inhabited. Another school of thought suggests that the earth became tohu v bohu (formlessness, confusion, unreality, emptiness, chaos, waste) as a result of God s anger and judgment on SATAN when he, with his angels, was cast out of heaven the judgment also falling on the race of people (Jer 4:23-27) over whom he had become ruler. This is the creation of a past age to which all the fossils and dinosaurs belong. God created the earth not in vain, ie not tohu v bohu. It became tohu v bohu, with many thousands or even millions of years in between, as long as true science requires, before the Adamic creation of Genesis 1:2b onwards. Page 4 of 28

Therefore, the scene depicted in Genesis 1:2 would appear to be the result of a subsequent judgment upon the earth, following its original creation. On the other hand, there are many scholars today who are quite emphatic that the earth is only 6,000 years old. 1.2 HIS NAMES (a) LUCIFER : shining one Isaiah 14:12 The context indicates that this is a reference to Satan before he fell from the brightness of God s glory and became the ruler of the kingdom of darkness. (b) SATAN : adversary, opponent, enemy I Chron 21:1; Job 1:6; Zech 3:1,2. There are numerous references to Satan throughout the Scriptures, and they apply either to the personal devil or to demon spirits under his command, and even to those whom he used in his work of opposition to God and God s people, as in Matt 16:23. (c) DEVIL : accuser, slanderer Matt 4:1; Acts 10:38; Eph 6:11; Heb 2:14 refers to a personal devil who is the source of evil and includes particularly his power to deceive, ensnare and tempt. (d) SERPENT : signifying his subtlety and wisdom. Gen 3:1-14; Num 21:6-9; John 3:14; Rev 12:9,14,15; Rev 20:2. Here, the serpent is a type of Satan as the source of sin; also the wisdom of a serpent in Matt 10:16 and James 3:15. (e) DRAGON : symbolising his vicious rage Rev 12:3-17; 13:2,4,11; 16:13; 20:2. It seems that Satan is referred to as a dragon in relation to his activities involving the great world powers aggressive and ruthless. (f) BEELZEBUB : prince of the devils Matt 10:25; 12:24,27. Derived from Baalzebub (II Kings 1:2), a heathen god believed to be the ruler of all evil spirits. (g) PRINCE OF THE POWER OF THE AIR Eph 2:2 This term is given to Satan and describes him as ruling over the kingdom of darkness which is inhabiting the atmosphere surrounding the earth. Page 5 of 28

(h) GOD OF THIS AGE II Cor 4:4 cf Gal 1:4. This period of time between the first coming of Christ and His second coming is described as this present evil age. (i) RULER OF THIS WORLD (kosmos, or world order) John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11. This name is applied to Satan as the ruler of the systems of the world outside the Kingdom of God. 1.3 HIS EVIL HOSTS There is much difference of opinion with regard to the origin of the Satanic hosts. Three main views held are as follows: (a) (b) (c) 1.4 THEIR NAMES That they are the SPIRITS OF MEN who belonged to a pre-adamic creation over which Satan was ruler. It is suggested that, when such a race was destroyed under the judgment of God, their disembodied spirits continued to inhabit the earth and atmosphere surrounding it, and that Satan is still directing them in his attempt to regain sovereignty over the earth. There is no scripture that would either directly or indirectly support this view. That they are the ANGELS WHICH FELL with Satan. It is suggested that there were three archangels Gabriel, Michael and Lucifer each one having command over one third of the angels of God, and that, when Lucifer fell, one third of the angels fell with him. Such an event would appear to be alluded to in Rev 12:4,7-9. That they are a combination of (a) and (b) above; this view covers the great variety of levels of authority and intelligence found in the demonic hierarchy. (a) PRINCIPALITIES : Greek arkee, translated as first, beginning, rule, magistrates and principalities. In most cases where it is translated as the latter, it applies to the first and highest order of the hosts under Satan s direction. A prince of Satan s kingdom would appear to have many other evil powers under his command. Eph 1:21; 3:10; 6:12; Col 2:10,15. Page 6 of 28

(b) POWERS : Greek exousia, meaning authority. This authority applies only within the kingdom of Satan and never over God s people. It is apparently a lesser rank than that of principality see (a) for Scriptures. (c) DEMONS : Greek daimon, daimonion Matt 9:33-34; Mark 1:34; 16:17; Luke 8:2; 9:1; James 2:19 etc. Translated as devil or devils. (d) SPIRITS : Greek pneuma Same word used for Holy Spirit, and man s own spirit, as well as evil spirits. Matt 8:16; Acts 16:16; I Tim 4:1 etc. (e) RULERS OF THE DARKNESS OF THIS AGE Eph 6:12 It would appear that this term refers to the evil hosts that oppose the Light of God and cause this dispensation to be this present evil age. (f) POWER OF DARKNESS : power = exousia Col 1:13 Satan s authority is only in the world of darkness. Upon entering the Kingdom of light, we are no longer subject to his authority. (g) ANGELS OF DESTRUCTION: evil angels Psalm 78:49 These are the fallen angels who bring evil, sickness and disaster. 2. CHRIST S VICTORY OVER SATAN 2.1 CHRIST S PERSONAL VICTORY Matt 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13 In the wilderness, Satan tempted Jesus in the three realms of His life spirit, soul and body. Mark says in 1:12 that the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness, indicating that the wilderness temptations were in the plan and purpose of God for His Son. It was necessary for Christ to win His PERSONAL victory over Satan before He could win a representative victory on our behalf. Demons recognised Christ s personal authority over them even before Calvary. Luke 4:33-36 Christ also delegated His personal authority to His chosen disciples. Matt 10:1; Luke 10:17-20. Page 7 of 28

2.2 CHRIST S REPRESENTATIVE VICTORY The victory in the wilderness temptation was on His own behalf, but the victory on Calvary was on our behalf. Col 2:15 When Jesus died and rose again, He defeated Satan in five realms: (a) Jesus conquered Satan as the author of sin. I John 3:8; II Cor 5:21 (b) Jesus conquered Satan as the author of sickness. Isaiah 53:4; Matt 8:16,17; Acts 10:38; I Cor 6:19-20 (c) Jesus conquered Satan in the realm of death. Heb 2:14; Rev 1:18 (d) Jesus conquered Satan as ruler of this world. Matt 4:8-10; Eph 1:20-23 (e) Jesus conquered Satan in universal dominion. Eph 4:8-10; Phil 2:9-11 2.3 CHRIST S RESURRECTION AND ASCENSION DISPLACED SATAN AND HIS DEMONS FROM HEAVEN In Job 1:6-12 and 2:1-7, we see that Satan had access into the presence of God where he made accusations concerning Job, with the result that God, in order to justify His own confidence in Job, was obligated to allow Satan to attack him. In brief, Job had to justify himself against the accusations of Satan. But as Christ ascended in triumphant victory, Satan was displaced and confined to this earth. In Luke 10:18, Jesus describes this as He, with a prophetic eye, was seeing the casting out of Satan from heaven. See also John 12:31; 16:11. 3. THE BELIEVER S VICTORY OVER SATAN In Revelation 12:7-12, we are given details of what happened following the resurrection of Christ. We see in verses 10 and 11 that Satan, who once accused the brethren in the presence of God, has now been cast down from the highest heaven, and that NOW we, the believers, must overcome him by the Blood of the Lamb and the word of (our) testimony. Page 8 of 28

It is thrilling to know that God has chosen mortal men and women regenerated, Spirit-filled and members of the body of Christ to be the instruments by which the power of Satan will be overcome, and the grace and wisdom of God demonstrated. Eph 3:10; II Cor 2:14 Rev 12:12 shows that the kingdom of darkness is energised by great wrath and a sense of desperate urgency in its onslaught against the people of God. Let us consider five fundamentals for the victory over Satan and his power on the part of every individual believer and every local church. 3.1 UNION WITH CHRIST Firstly, every true believer is, by faith, identified with Christ in His death, resurrection and ascension to the Throne of God. Therefore, as we accept our identification with Him, we share His victory. Eph 2:4-7; Col 2:10; 1:13. Secondly, as a result of the new birth, the Spirit of the enthroned Son of God now dwells within us. This is an actual fact. It is the practical result of regeneration, and brings us victory. Gal 4:4-6; Col 1:27; Eph 3:16-20; I John 4:4 etc. 3.2 THE WORD OF GOD Satan s power is broken by the light of the truth of God s Word. We must equip ourselves with an intelligent knowledge of the Word of God and, by faith, live in and apply that knowledge, and exhort those to whom we minister to do likewise. John 8:32 3.3 THE NAME OF JESUS Since we are identified with Christ, our representative, we have absolute authority, in the NAME of Jesus, over Satan and his demons. Thus the eternal and absolute defeat of the kingdom of darkness has been secured for every believer. In the Name of Jesus we can rebuke, command, resist, overcome and deliver from Satan and his demons. Mark 16:17; Act 16:18; Phil 2:9-11 etc. 3.4 THE BLOOD OF JESUS Demons hate and fear the Blood of Jesus Christ. They know that the sinless blood of Christ was shed that their right and authority over believing humanity might be forever destroyed and that we, through the blood of Christ, have perfect redemption. I Cor 6:19,20; I Peter 1:18,19; Rev 12:11. Page 9 of 28

3.5 THE HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit, by His power and His gifts, can give us adequate equipment to contend with and overcome all the strength and subtlety of the kingdom of darkness. One particular gift of the Holy Spirit which should be coveted in relation to a ministry which deals with demon power is the gift of discerning of spirits, which literally means the ability to thoroughly assess the nature, strength and work of a demon. I Cor 12:10; Acts 16:16 Each of these five points could be greatly enlarged upon, but the above outlines should give a sound basis upon which every believer, and particularly every worker, can build an impregnable defence against the enemy, and experience a glorious victory over all his power. 4. THE MINISTRY OF DELIVERANCE We now approach the more practical side of demonology, called exorcism. Because Satan has fashioned himself into an angel of light (II Cor 11:14), we need to know the Word of God to be able to uncover the enemy and deal with him. 4.1 KNOWING THE WORKING OF THE ENEMY Let us first take a look at various forms in which this is described in the Old Testament. See Deuteronomy 18:10-12. (a) DIVINATION, or WITCHCRAFT: endeavouring to penetrate the future; fortune telling. (b) SOOTHSAYER: conveying the response of a spirit, and in the realm of divination. (c) INTERPRETING OMENS: predicting the future by the stars, tea-leaves, cards, flights of birds etc. (d) SORCERER: the art necessary to call a spirit. (e) CONJURING SPELLS : hypnotism, witchcraft. (f) MEDIUMS: the making of incantations by lustral fires, fumigations etc. to appease the gods. (g) SPIRITIST: one who conducts seances and makes contact with the spirit world. Page 10 of 28

(h) NECROMANCER: one who calls up the dead; one who pretends to awaken the dead. 4.2 VARIOUS FORMS IN WHICH THE WORK OF THE ENEMY IS FOUND TODAY Many of these forms are finding their way into our schools. Let us warn our children, and shun any form of the following: Spiritualism Spiritism Ouija Board Teacup Reading Hypnotism Fortune Telling Palm Reading Astrology The Crystal Ball Drug Taking Telepathy Beat Music Yoga Transcendental Meditation NOTE! Drug taking: Gal 5:20 One of the works of the flesh is witchcraft; the RSV says sorcery. The Greek word is PHARMAKEIA, which Youngs says is an enchanter with drugs. Strongs says Pharmakeia ( Pharmacy ) or medication a druggist or poisoner. Rev 21:8; 22:15. 4.3 ALL FORMS OF DEVIL WORSHIP FORBIDDEN See Leviticus 19:31; 20:27; Exodus 22:18; Isaiah 8:19. See also Saul s experience I Sam 28:12-15; I Chron 10:13,14. 4.4 VARIOUS FORMS OF BONDAGE Oppressed see Acts 10:38; literal meaning is to be tyrannised, which is really experienced by all believers. Eph 6:12; James 4:7; I Peter 5:8-9. Possessed Does not mean a person is totally controlled by a demon, but that the demon has possession of some part of the mind or body, as in Matt 9:32-33 and 12:22. 4.5 CAN A CHRISTIAN BE POSSESSED? The answer is Yes, but only in an area of the mind or body if they are not totally yielded to the Lord. Page 11 of 28

5. PREPARATIONS FOR DELIVERANCE 5.1 QUALIFICATIONS OF A PERSON MINISTERING DELIVERANCE (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) We need Authority which comes by: i) The born-again experience; ii) A thorough knowledge of the Word of God. We need Power which comes by: i) Baptism with the Holy Spirit; ii) Walking in the Spirit. We need Faith, which produces courage, determination and perseverance. We need Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit for the operation of the gifts, especially discerning of spirits. We need to know the Weapons of our Warfare, as set out previously on pages five and six. Ministering deliverance is not for new folk, or novices, and is dangerous for anyone to meddle with, who themselves are not walking in victory. Acts 19:13-16 Ministering deliverance is certainly not to be undertaken by anyone except under direction of the Pastor. Heb 13:17; Jas 4:7 Demon possessed people are often determined to try and exercise this ministry with resultant confusion and tragedy. They usually believe they have special gifts, and that the oversight in the Church is jealous of them. 5.2 PREPARING THE PERSON NEEDING DELIVERANCE (a) (b) The co-operation of the one being delivered is needed. Mark 9:24 Lord, I believe; help my unbelief! It is important that the person desiring deliverance be willing themselves to fight with the weapons God offers. Matt 12:43-45; Luke 8:35; John 5:14 (c) Differentiate between uncrucified flesh and a need for deliverance. Matt 24:28 eagles and vultures; evil spirits. Sin is darkness. John 3:19,20; cf Eph 6:12; Col 1:13 Page 12 of 28

(d) Humility must be evident. It is a spiritual law of God I Peter 5:7-8; Matt 8:9; 23:12 The devil reigns in rebellion I Sam 15:23 (e) (f) Complete honesty is very important. Jesus is the Truth; the devil is a liar. All things are open to God Heb 4:13. The person must be prepared to face the facts, acknowledge that they need help and recognise that Jesus is the only one who can help. 5.3 TYPES OF DEMONS WE MAY ENCOUNTER Types of demons often work in groups in different areas, taking over a person s life. (a) (b) Pride, envy, jealousy. Resentment, hatred, rebellion against those who are nearest and dearest children against parents: Nicky Cruz, gang leader. (c) Fear, frustration, tension. II Tim 1:7 (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) (i) Depression, spirit of heaviness Is 61:3, suicide. Lying and deceit. Sex sexual perversion is demoniacal. Addictive Habits - Gluttony, drinking, smoking, drugs. Luke 17:27 - in Noah s day, they ate and drank. Luke 17:28 in Lot s day, they ate and drank. Verse 30 even so shall it be at the Second Coming eat, drink. Luke 21:34 carousing and drunkenness. Language Blasphemy, bad language, dirty stories - Col 3:8; reading of bad literature Eph 4:29-31; 5:4. Religious area Seducing spirits I Tim 4:1-2; Spirit of truth and spirit of error I John 4:6. 5.4 THE PERSONALITY OF DEMONS The ability to know, will, speak, have emotions. Page 13 of 28

Acts 19:15 Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you? Luke 4:33-34 I know who You are. Mark 5:1-14 They speak out of a person - My name is Legion. James 2:19 The devils believe also and tremble. Split personality two persons one demon. Page 14 of 28

6. THE WAY OF DELIVERANCE 6.1 FOUR STEPS LEADING UP TO DELIVERANCE (a) (b) (c) (d) Confession of sin to God and prayer for forgiveness. I John 1:9; I John 2:1-2; James 5:16 to one another, all known sin. Lay aside all resentment, hatred, envy, jealousy. Hebrews 12:15 a root of bitterness Mark 11:24-25 When you pray forgive Mt 6:9-15; Lu 11:2-4 the Lord s Prayer Forgiveness must come before deliverance. Don t take notice of feelings it is an act of will; say it. Rom 10:9-10 Believe say; forgive say it. To be followed by a pronouncement of absolution by the one ministering to the person see Matt 16:15-19; Matt 18:15-20; John 20:23. A prayer of renunciation Rom 10:10; Rev 12:11 & Jn 14:30 Amp. Then the prayer for deliverance. 6.2 FOUR STEPS IN THE ACTUAL DELIVERANCE (a) (b) (c) (d) Identify the spirit. This may require the discerning of spirits. That is why it is good to always minister deliverance with a helper. Renounce the spirit by name. Command it to leave. Expel the spirit. 7. MAINTAINING YOUR DELIVERANCE The building of the walls and gates of security for every Christian, particularly those who have had deliverance. Luke 11:24-26 I will return to my house demons. Continual fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Here are six keys: Page 15 of 28

Finally: Demonology 7.1 LIVE IN THE SCRIPTURES Learn some off by heart. Know what they have to say about you. I John 3:8; Heb 2:14-16 Jesus to destroy Satan Col 1:12-13 Not in Satan s kingdom any more Luke 10:17-19 Power over all the power of the enemy Matt 10:1 Power over devils, disease, sickness John 14:10-14 You shall do greater works Col 2:15 Satan defeated by Christ Rev 12:11 Overcome him by the Blood of the Lamb Phil 2:5-10 A Name above every name (Jesus) 7.2 PRAISE GOD CONTINUALLY We must learn to walk and talk with the Lord. Eph 6:18 Praying in the Spirit I Thess 5:17 Prayer without ceasing Jude v.20 Building up your most holy faith Luke 18:1 Men should always pray and not faint Ps 150:6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord Ps 149:6 Praise in mouth, two-edged sword in hand 7.3 GUARD YOUR THOUGHT LIFE II Corinthians 10:4-5 7.4 CULTIVATE RIGHT RELATIONSHIPS Phil 4:8-9; Hebrews 10:25; I Cor 12:12-27 7.5 SUBMIT TO DISCIPLINE Remember always that rebellion is the devil s playground. Matt 8:9; Phil 2:5-11; Heb 13:17 7.6 ATTEND CHURCH REGULARLY Hebrews 10:24-25 Job had a hedge around him God put it there. Job 1:9-10 We can have a hedge around us, by faith in the Blood, reading the Word, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Know who Jesus is : Eph 1:17-23 Know what He said you are : Rom 8:37 Know and believe what power He has delegated to you: Luke 10:17-19 Know the devil was eternally defeated by Christ for you: Col 2:15 Page 16 of 28

Go out in the power of the Name of Jesus, and set other captives free: John 8:32-36 Deliverance itself is not the answer to all of a person s problems, but it makes it possible for the person to walk in victory. It is a beginning. The overcoming, positive faith walk is still essential after deliverance so that the believer may grow in grace and spiritual strength, and maintain his freedom. 8. SUMMARY 1. Remember that many people are delivered without being aware of it, even as they mature in their walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. 2. Remember not to blame demon power for all and every trouble. 3. Deliverance ministry, as a general statement, is the last resort of ministry, and is not the natural action to be taken. 4. Remember, deliverance ministry is not the solution to a possessed or oppressed person s problems. It is only the doorway to a positive, victorious life in Christ in which correct thinking, acting and speaking are essential. 5. Remember, nothing takes the place of a maturing, deepening walk in the living Word of God, filled with His Spirit and entering to the greatest extent possible into the fellowship of the saints.
