Bringing metrology to Swiss hospitals: CIR II / TCIR project Frédéric Juget (1), Youcef Nedjadi (1), Damian Twerenbold (2), François Bochud (1), Claude Bailat (1) (1) IRA, Lausanne, VD (2) METAS, Wabern, BE Subtitles: CIR = chambre d ionisation de référence TCIR = chambre d ionisation de transfert Institut de radiophysique
Who are we? Institut of radiation physics
Institute of radiation physics (IRA) IRA is a designated Institutes for unit of activity: Bq IRA is located in Lausanne (Switzerland), and is an independant institute of a state University hospital (CHUV)

The context of our project General Radionuclides use is increasing Radiometrology is reacting slow to the market needs, especially in nuclear medicine (new radionuclides, new technologies) At METAS From 2013, METAS performs verification services of radionuclide calibrators (previously done by a private firm) At the Swiss authorities BAG (federal office of public health) has decided to increase its surveillance in nuclear medicine and requires scientific and enforcement partners: IRA, METAS, BAG, users
Context Metrology is the science of measurement. It covers three main tasks: The definition of internationally accepted units of measurement The realization of units of measurement by scientific methods The establishment of traceability chains in documenting the accuracy of a measurement IRA has 21 Calibration and Measurement Capability (CMC): F-18, Na-22, Mn-54, Co-57, Co-60, Se-75, Y-88, Sr/Y-90, Tc-99m, Cd-109, I-123, I-125, I-131, Ba-133, Cs-134, Cs-137, Ce-139, Eu-152, Yb-169, Ir-192, Tl-204
Goals of the CIR II / TCIR Project CIR II: Swiss reference chamber for the next decades TCIR: Improvement of traceability in nuclear medicine
What is a CIR? Radioactive solution Reference ionization chamber - chambre d ionisation de référence (CIR) C A, mes A e Primary measurement Primary measurement C A, mes Primary measurement SIR
What is a CIR? Radioactive solution Reference ionization chamber - chambre d ionisation de référence (CIR) C A, mes A e Primary measurement Primary measurement C A, mes Primary measurement SIR
Why CIR II? Our CIR is more than 30 years old. Future reliability (electrical, mechanical)? Swiss reference is at risk!!! It is time for a new reference chamber
What is a TCIR? Transfer CIR Movable precision ionization chamber
Why a TCIR? Provide a unique on-site service for nuclear medicine users and providers Measurement of short-lived radionuclide Calibration on-site of commercial radionuclide calibrators Calibration of injectors with embedded radionuclide calibrators
What is the big picture? We are building a chain of traceability An unbroken chain of comparisons relating an instrument's measurements to a known standard

Project planning
Project status Two chambers are under tests Acquisition electronics is almost completed Ho-166m reference source will be purified before the end of the year We will still keep to types of ampoules (BIPM and ISO?) Under study: support system and shielding for TCIR Both system will be ready in 2017
Project goals Swiss reference chamber for the next decades : CIR II at IRA replace CIR with CIR II replace reference source of Cs-137 with Ho- 166m Improvement of traceability in nuclear medicine : TCIR at METAS On-site services Bring radiometrology directly to users!
