OVERVIEW Here s what you ll learn in this lesson: Linear a. Solving linear equations b. Solving linear inequalities Once you know ways to simplify algebraic expressions, you can use these techniques as you solve equations and inequalities. Solving equations and inequalities is an important part of algebra. In this lesson, you will solve linear equations and inequalities. 8 TOPIC EII ESSENTIALS OF ALGEBRA
LINEAR EXPLAIN Summary Equations and Inequalities You have already learned how to simplify expressions such as 7(x + 5) and x + 5x. When you relate expressions to each other with an equals sign or an inequality sign, you create an equation or an inequality. An example of an equation is: 7(x + 5) = x + 5x. An example of an inequality is: 7(y + 5) > y + 5y. In this lesson you will review how to solve linear equations and linear inequalities. Solving Linear Equations To solve a linear equation, you must isolate the variable that is, you must get the variable by itself on one side of the equation. Some equations are simple enough that you can find the solution just by looking at the equation. Other equations are more complicated and you need a systematic approach to find the solution. Here s a way to solve a linear equation:. Remove any parentheses using the distributive property.. Combine like terms on each side of the equation.. Then do the following, as necessary: Add the same quantity to both sides of the equation. Subtract the same quantity from both sides of the equation. Multiply or divide both sides of the equation by the same nonzero quantity. The distributive property states that for all real numbers a, b, and c: a(b + c) = a b + a c For example: ( + 5) = + = + 5 = 7. Check the solution. For example, to solve the equation x + 7 6x = :. Combine the like terms, x and 6x. x + 7 =. Subtract 7 from both sides. x + 7 7 = 7 x = 9 x. Divide both sides by. = x = 9 LESSON EII.C EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES EXPLAIN 9
. Check the solution, x =. Is () + 7 6() =? Is 9 + 7 8 =? Is =? Yes. So, the solution of the equation x + 7 6x = is x =. Here is another example. To solve the equation 5(x + ) = 8:. Distribute the 5. 5 x + 5 = 8 5x + 5 = 8. Combine like terms on the left side. 5x + = 8. Subtract from both sides. 5x + = 8 5x = 5. Divide both sides by 5. = x = 5. Check the solution, x =. Is 5( + ) = 8? 5x 5 Is 5() = 8? Is 0 = 8? So, the solution of the equation 5(x + ) = 8 is x =. Is 8 = 8? Yes. Solving Linear Equations that Contain Fractions When a linear equation contains fractions, it is often easier to solve the equation if you first clear the fractions. Then you can use the steps you just learned to solve equations without fractions. To clear the fractions, multiply both sides of the equation by the least common denominator (LCD) of the fractions. Sometimes you can figure out the LCD just by looking at the denominators. Try this method on the first example below. To find the LCD using a formal method:. Factor each denominator into its prime factors.. List each prime factor the greatest number of times it appears in any one of the denominators.. Multiply the prime factors in the list. For example, to solve x = (x ): 0 TOPIC EII ESSENTIALS OF ALGEBRA
. Find the LCD of the fractions. Factor the denominators. = = List each factor the greatest, number of times it appears in any one of the denominators. Multiply the factors in the list. LCD = = 6. Multiply by 6 to clear the 6 x = 6 (x ) fractions. x = (x ). Distribute the. x = x x = x 8. Subtract x from both sides. x x = x 8 x x = 8 5. Check the solution. Is ( 8) = ( 8 )? So, x = 8 is the solution of the equation x = (x ). x Consider another example. To solve = x + : 8 0 0. Find the LCD of the fractions. Is = ( )? Factor the denominators. 8 = 0 = 0 = List each factor the greatest,,, 5 number of times it appears in any one of the denominators. Is =? Yes. Multiply the factors in the list. LCD = = 0 x. Multiply by 0 to clear the 0 = 0 x + 8 0 0 fractions. 5x = 0 0 5x = x +. Subtract x from both sides. 5x x = x + x x = x + 0 0 LESSON EII.C EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES EXPLAIN
x. Divide both sides by. = x = 5. Check the solution. Is = +? x So, x = is the solution of the equation = x +. 8 0 0 Solving Equations with Multiple Variables Is = +? Is =? Is =? Yes. Often formulas or equations have more than one variable. You can solve for one of the variables in terms of the others. 8 6 6 0 0 6 0 0 This is the formula for the circumference of a circle. C is the circumference, r is the radius, and π is a number approximately equal to.. For example, to solve the formula C = πr for r : C C. Divide both sides by. = πr = πr. Divide both sides by π. = C π So, r =. As another example, to solve w = xy + 5z for x : C π C π. Subtract 5z from both sides. w 5z = xy + 5z 5z = r w 5z = xy w 5z y. Divide both sides by y. = πr π xy y w 5z y = x w 5z y So, x =. Remember there are equations with no solutions. There are also equations, called identities, where every value of the variable is a solution. Solving Linear Inequalities While the linear equations you have seen have only one solution, linear inequalities usually have an infinite number of solutions. But you use the same strategy to solve both. However, it is important to remember one key difference: when you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative number, you must reverse the direction of the inequality. TOPIC EII ESSENTIALS OF ALGEBRA
For example, to solve 6( x) > 7:. Distribute the 6. 6 6 x > 7 8 6x > 7. Subtract 8 from both sides. 8 6x 8 > 7 8 6x >. Divide both sides by 6. < So all real numbers less than the solution on a number line. 6 x < satisfy this inequality. You can graph 6 6x 6 6 6 If you re having trouble remembering when to reverse the direction of a sign, try this: always reverse the direction of the sign when you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, even with an equality sign. Just notice that a flipped equality sign doesn t change the solution. 8 6 0 6 8 As another example, to solve 7( x) 5 + 7x:. Distribute the 7. 7 ( 7) x 5 + 7x + 7x 5 + 7x. Add to both sides. + 7x + 5 + 7x + 7x 7x + 6. Subtract 7x from both sides. 7x 7x 7x + 6 7x 0 6 No! Since 0 is not greater than or equal to 6, this inequality has no solution. Solving Compound Linear Inequalities A compound inequality is a shorthand way of writing two inequalities. When you solve a compound inequality and you add, subtract, multiply or divide, you must do so to all sides of the inequality. For example, to solve 9 y > : Remember, you do not reverse the inequality sign when you distribute a negative number. Only flip the sign when you multiply or divide both sides of the inequality by a negative number. Another way to solve a compound inequality is to break up the compound inequality and solve the two simple inequalities separately.
