I am interested in investigating hidden patterns in complex real and virtual time-varying networks, with particular attention to social, biological and economic data. Indeed, I develop models and simulations of the spreading of epidemics and information in real-world social networks. Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO), Malargue, Mendoza (Argentina) Laboratory for Complex Systems (SSC), Catania (Italy) Education Jan 2009 to Dec 2011 6 Courses Thesis Summary of Research Activity and subject of Ph. D. dissertation Ph. D. in Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics, Scuola Superiore di Catania EoS of Nuclear and Quark Matter Particle Physics Astrophysics General Relativity and Cosmology High Energy Astrophysics Nuclear Astrophysics Propagation of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays and anisotropy studies with the Pierre Auger Observatory: the multiscale approach Research activity has been developing within the Catania Auger Group (Department of Physics and Astronomy of Catania and Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Sez. Catania) and the Laboratory for Complex Systems (Scuola Superiore di Catania), under the supervision of Prof. Antonio Insolia and Prof. Vito Latora, respectively. Two subjects are followed: a) Characterization of the nature of the highest energy cosmic rays detected from the Pierre Auger Observatory (Malargue, Argentina). Dr. De Domenico introduced a novel method for estimating the statistically significant amount of anisotropy in the arrival direction distribution of few events. The method involves a multiscale procedure, based on information theory and extreme value statistics, providing high discrimination power, even in presence of strong background isotropic contamination. The method is naturally extended to allow multiscale crosscorrelation analysis with candidate sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Current research activity deals with the simulation of realistic sky maps of UHECRs (by taking into account propagation effects in galactic and extragalactic turbulent magnetic fields) in order to investigate the corresponding clustering features within multiscale methods. b) Development of nonlinear techniques to characterize chaos, stochastic fluctuations and scale dependent multifractality from complex univariate scalar time series. Nonlinear time series analysis is currently employed to investigate the rate of events with energy above 0.1 EeV, in order to capture the signatures of turbulent dynamics. Preliminary results on P. Auger data show a fascinating multifractal and turbulence-like behavior. C++ software developed: CV, De Domenico Manlio 1

Score i) HERMES: an ad hoc Monte Carlo code for the realistic simulation of UHECR propagation in a magnetized Universe. Customizable options/models include: Cosmology, Extragalactic Background Radiation, Source distribution and injection at source, Composition at source, Energy-loss effects (photo-pion production, pair production, photo-disintegration, etc), Production of secondary particles (neutrinos, gammas, pairs e + e - ), Intervening magnetic fields (regular/irregular Galactic or extragalactic) HERMES is a C++ modular framework, allowing extensions to more exotics models for cosmology, distribution of sources, extragalactic background radiation and nuclear interactions. ii) TSUT (Time Series UTilities): package for simulating dynamical systems (stochastic or chaotic deterministic) and for nonlinear time series analysis involving fluctuation theory, information theory, extreme value theory, chaos theory and multifractal theory of complex systems. Doctorate cum Laude Nov 2005 to Jul 2008 Laurea Specialistica (Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics), 15 courses. Main exams: Thesis Abstract Score Oct 2002 to Nov 2005 Laurea Triennale, 26 courses. Auger Observatory The thesis work presents the results about the chaotic or stochastic nature of the dynamical system of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory, by obtaining an autonomous set of equations from the Ginzburg-Syrovatskii transport equation. Researches were focused on the nonlinear analysis of the arrival times of those events with energy greater than 10 EeV in order to study, experimentally, nonlinearity and nonstationarity of the dynamical system they belong to. Preliminary results show a nonlinear dynamical structure emerging at energies greater than 40 EeV, putting in evidence the exciting perspective of few emitting sources with an hybrid, periodic and aperiodic, behavior. 110 / 110 Magna cum Laude B. Christenson, J.W. Cronin, V.L. Fitch and R. Turley in 1964. Implications on Time (T) symmetry violation have been considered and a proof of the CPT theorem is presented in the framework of quantum relativistic mechanics. Finally, cosmological consequences of CP symmetry violation have been analyzed: by starting from the Sakharov hypotheses, the origin of the asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the universe is presented. 110 / 110 Magna cum Laude International Schools Sep 2009, S.
