LABORATORY V CONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM In this lab you will use conservation of momentum to predict the motion of objects resulting from interactions that are difficult to analyze with force concepts or conservation of energy. In these problems, you will explore the applicability of conservation of momentum in predicting the motion resulting from collisions. Fortunately, conservation principles can be used to relate the motion of an object before a collision to the motion after a collision, without knowledge of the complicated details of the collision process itself. To fully analyze an interaction, one must often use both conservation of energy and conservation of momentum. Objectives: Successfully completing this laboratory should enable you to: Use conservation of momentum to predict the outcome of interactions between objects. Choose a useful system when using conservation of momentum. Identify momentum transfer (impulse) when applying energy conservation to real systems. Use the principles of conservation of energy and of momentum together as a means of describing the behavior of systems. Preparation: Read Cummings, Laws, Redish, and Cooney, Understanding Physics, chapter 7, OR Giancoli, Physics for Scientists & Engineers, v1, chapter 9. You should also be able to: Analyze the motion of an object using video analysis. Calculate the work transferred to or from a system by an external force. Calculate the total energy of a system of objects. Calculate the total momentum of a system of objects. Lab V - 1

PROBLEM #1: PERFECTLY INELASTIC COLLISIONS You have a summer internship at NASA with an engineering group designing a docking mechanism that will allow the space shuttle to dock with the new George W. Bush Goitalone space station. During the time that the docking mechanism is expected to be in use, the space station and the shuttle will have approximately the same mass. However, since the shuttle may carry a payload, their masses may be different when they dock. Your NASA team leader has asked you to calculate the velocity of the combined shuttle + space station as a function of the relative velocity between the two before docking. It is important that the NASA engineers know this because the radius of the circular orbit around the earth will change depending upon the mass and speed of the combined system. In order to keep the shuttle + space station in the same orbit, it may be necessary to fire some rockets to give some additional kinetic energy to the system. To study the problem, you decide to calculate the resulting velocity for a system of two objects sticking together after colliding. You then build a laboratory model using carts floating on an air track to check your calculations. 1. Complete the lab experiment and accompanying report to address this question: When two objects collide and stick together, how does the final velocity depend upon the masses of the two objects, and their initial speeds? 2. Inform your NASA team leader in a memo of the results of your investigation, focusing on how these results affect the problem at hand. Generally, your memo should explain possible implications of the results you gain from your experiment. Specifically, your memo should address the following: For a given rocket thrust T, how long do we need to burn the rockets in order to maintain the same orbit? 3. Attach the report to your memo, turning a copy of both into your lab TA and your writing instructor. * Use these criteria to help you develop your memo. Content Development Is the significance of the results as it bears on the problem clearly stated and explained? Is the topic developed for the reader of the correspondence? Is the purpose for r the reader clearly stated? Are ideas expressed for the reader s understanding and use? Are the most significant ideas to the reader developed? Is the correspondence free from details that do not advance its purpose or reader response? Is what the reader should know or do as the result of your investigation explicitly stated? PROBLEM #1: PERFECTLY INELASTIC COLLISIONS Design Does the design, use of typography, advance the writer s purpose and reader s use of the correspondence? Is the design consistent with the main ideas? Are headings and subheadings parallel grammatically and typographically? Do important details stand out visually? Is the correspondence formatted correctly (heading complete, initialed, etc.) Expression Is the style (word choice and sentence structure) appropriate for r the intended audience? Is the style high impact? EQUIPMENT You will use the track and carts with which you are familiar. For this problem, cart A is given an initial velocity towards a stationary cart B. Pads at the end of each cart are used to get the carts to stick together after the collision. The video analysis equipment is available. You also need a meter stick, a stopwatch, two end stops and cart masses. This is exactly the same situation as Problem #3 in Lab IV. If you did that Problem, you can use that data to check your prediction. moving A stationary B PREDICTION Calculate the final velocities of the carts as a function of the initial velocity of cart A and the masses of the two carts. You will investigate the following three cases in which the total mass of the two carts is constant (ma + mb = constant): (a) the masses of the carts are equal (ma = mb); (b) the moving cart has a larger mass than the stationary cart (ma > mb); (c) the moving cart has a smaller mass than the stationary cart (ma < mb). How do the final velocities of the stuck-together carts compare to one another and to the initial velocity of cart A? Discuss both magnitude and direction. Lab V - 3

PROBLEM #1: PERFECTLY INELASTIC COLLISIONS METHOD QUESTIONS It is useful to have an organized problem-solving strategy such as the one outlined in the following questions. 1. Make two drawings that show the situation before the collision and after the collision. Show and label velocity vectors for every object in your drawings. Define your system. 2. Write down the momentum conservation equation for this situation and identify all of the terms in the equation. Are there any of these terms that you cannot measure with the equipment at hand? 3. Write down the energy conservation equation for this situation and identify all the terms in the equation. Are there any of these terms that you cannot measure with the equipment at hand? 4. Which conservation principle should you use to predict the final velocity of the stuck-together carts, or do you need both equations? Why? EXPLORATION If you have done Problem #2 in Lab IV, you should be able to skip this part. Practice setting the cart into motion so the carts stick together after the collision. Also, after the collision carefully observe the carts to determine whether or not either cart leaves the grooves in the track. Adjust your procedure to minimize this effect so that your results are reliable. Try giving the moving cart various initial velocities over the range that will give reliable results. Note qualitatively the outcomes. Keep in mind also that you want to choose an initial velocity that gives you a good video. Try varying the masses of the carts so that the mass of the initially moving cart covers a range from greater than the mass of the stationary cart to less than the mass the stationary cart while keeping the total mass of the carts the same. Be sure the carts still move freely over the track. What masses will you use in your final measurement? Lab V - 4

PROBLEM #1: PERFECTLY INELASTIC COLLISIONS MEASUREMENT If you have done Problem #2 in Lab IV, you should be able to skip this part and just use the data you have already taken. Otherwise make the measurements outlined below. Record the masses of the two carts. Make a video of their collision. Examine your video and decide if you have enough frames to determine the velocities you need. Are there any peculiarities that you notice in the data that might suggest that the data is unreliable? Analyze your data as you go along (before making the next video), so you can determine how many different videos you need to make, and what the carts' masses should be for each video. Collect enough data to convince yourself and others of your conclusion about how the final velocity of both carts in this type of collision depends on velocity of the initially moving cart and the masses of the carts. ANALYSIS Determine the velocities of the carts (with uncertainty) before and after each collision from your video. Calculate the momentum of the carts before and after the collision. Now use your Prediction equation to calculate each final velocity (with uncertainty) of the stuck-together carts. CONCLUSION How do your measured and predicted values of the final velocity compare? Compare both magnitude and direction. What are the limitations on the accuracy of your measurements and analysis? When a moving shuttle collides with a stationary shuttle and they dock (stick together), how does the final velocity depend on the initial velocity of the moving shuttle and the masses of the shuttles? State your results in the most general terms supported by the data. Use your results and conservation of energy to calculate the energy dissipation and compare with your results from Lab IV, Problem #2. Lab V - 5

PROBLEM #2: ELASTIC COLLISIONS You have a summer internship at NASA with an engineering group investigating the destruction of the space shuttle Columbia. Videotape of the launch of the Columbia shows a large piece of foam hitting the shuttle's wing and bouncing off. It is possible through video analysis to measure the relative velocity of the foam and shuttle before and after the collision. The engineers have assigned you the task of determining if the collision was perfectly elastic. If this were the case, then it would be expected that the amount of damage to the wing would be negligible since no kinetic energy would have been deposited into the wing material. You decide to find a mathematical relationship between the final velocity of two objects with different masses and the initial velocities when they collide head on. In order to test your theory, you perform a series of experiments using carts floating on an airtrack. 1. Complete the lab experiment and accompanying report to address this question: When two objects collide elastically, how does the final velocity depend upon the masses of the two objects, and their initial speeds? 2. If you did that Problem, you can use that data to check your prediction. moving A stationary B PREDICTION Calculate the final velocities of the two carts as a function of the initial velocity of cart A, the masses of the two carts, and the energy efficiency of the collision. You will investigate the following three cases, in which the total mass of the carts is constant (m A + m B = constant): (a) the masses of the carts are equal (m A = m B ); (b) the moving cart has a larger mass than the stationary cart (m A > m B ); (c) the moving cart has a smaller mass than the stationary cart (m A < m B ). How do the final velocities of the two carts compare to one another and to the initial velocity of cart A in each of the three cases? Discuss both magnitude and direction. Lab V - 7

PROBLEM #2: ELASTIC COLLISIONS METHOD QUESTIONS It is useful to have an organized problem-solving strategy such as the one outlined in the following questions. 1. Write down the momentum of the system before and after the collision. Is there any momentum transferred into or out of the system? 3. Write down the momentum conservation equation for this situation and identify all of the terms in the equation. 4. Write down the energy of the system before the collision. Write down the energy of the system after the collision. Is there any energy transferred into or out of the system? 5. Write the expression for the energy dissipated in the collision in terms of the energy efficiency and the initial kinetic energy of the system (see Laboratory IV, Problem #3). From your previous measurements, can you assume that no energy is converted into internal energy? Write down the energy conservation equation for this situation and identify all the terms in the equation. Solve the equations that you wrote down above to find the final velocity of each cart in terms of the known quantities. Warning: the algebra here may quickly become particularly unpleasant! EXPLORATION If you have done Problem #3 in Lab IV, you should be able to skip this part. Practice setting the cart into motion so that the carts don t actually touch. Also, after the collision carefully observe the carts to determine whether or not either cart leaves the grooves in the track. Adjust your procedure to minimize this effect so that your results are reliable. Try giving the moving cart various initial velocities over the range that will give reliable results. Note qualitatively the outcomes. Keep in mind that you want to choose an initial velocity that gives you a good video. Examine your video and decide if you have enough frames to determine the velocities you need. Are there any peculiarities that you notice in the data that might suggest that the data is unreliable? ANALYSIS Determine the velocities of the carts (with uncertainty) before and after each collision from your video. Calculate the momentum and kinetic energy of the carts before and after the collision. If you have the results from Lab IV, Problem #3, use the appropriate energy efficiency you determined for the collision from that problem. If not, calculate the energy efficiency of each collision from the initial and final kinetic energy of the system. Graph how the energy efficiency varies with mass of the initially moving cart (keeping the total mass of both carts constant). What is the function that describes this graph? Repeat this for energy efficiency as a function of initial velocity. Can you make the approximation that no energy goes into internal energy of the system (energy efficiency = 1)? Now use your Prediction equation to calculate the final velocity (with uncertainty) of each cart. CONCLUSION Did your measurement agree with your prediction? Why or why not? What are the limitations on the accuracy of your measurements and analysis? Lab V - 9
