March, The Fairest o the Fair (1908) The Fairest o the Fair is generally regarded as one o Sousa s inest and most melodic marches, and its insirations came rom the sight o a retty girl with whom he was not even acquainted. It was an immediate success and has remained one o his most oular comositions. It stands out as one o the inest examles o the alication o leasing melodies to the restrictive ramework o a military march. The Boston Food Fair was an annual exosition and music jubilee held by the Boston Retail Grocers Association. The Sousa Band was the main musical attraction or several seasons, so the creation o a new march honoring the sonsors o the 1908 Boston Food Fair was the natural outgrowth o a leasant business relationshi. In airs beore 1908, Sousa had been imressed by the beauty and charm o one articular young lady who was the center o attention o the dislays in which she was emloyed. He made a mental note that he would someday transer his imressions o her into music. When the invitation came or the Sousa Band to lay a twenty-day engagement in 1908, he wrote this march. Remembering the comely girl, he entitled the new march The Fairest o the Fair. Because o an oversight, the march almost missed its remière. Nearly three months beore the air, Sousa had comleted a sketch o the march or the ublisher. He also wrote out a ull conductor s score rom which the individual band arts were to have been extracted. The band had just inished an engagement the night beore the air s oening and had boarded a sleeer train or Boston. Louis Morris, the band s coyist, was heling the librarian sort music or the irst concert, and he discovered that the most imortant iece on the rogram The Fairest o the Fair had not been reared. According to Morris s own story, the librarian, whose job it had been to reare the arts, went into a anic. There was good reason; considerable advance ublicity had been given to the new march, and the air atrons would be execting to hear it. In addition, the iano sheet music had already been ublished, and coies were to be distributed ree to the irst ive hundred ladies entering the gates o the air. Morris rose to the occasion. He asked the orter o the train to bring a ortable desk, which he laced on a illow across his la. He worked the entire night, and the arts were nearly inished when dawn broke. Both were greatly surrised by the aearance o Sousa, who had arisen to take his usual early morning walk. When asked about the renzied activity, they had no choice but to tell exactly what had haened. There were many times in the lie o ohn Phili Sousa when he demonstrated his benevolence and magnanimity, and this was surely one o them. Ater recognizing Morris s extraordinary eort and remarking that it was saving the band rom considerable embarrassment, he instructed him to comlete his work and to take a well-deserved rest, even i it meant sleeing through the irst concert. With no one the wiser, Louis Morris hero o the day was aslee in his hotel as Sousa s Band layed The Fairest o the Fair or the irst time on Setember 28, 1908. Sousa did not mention the subject again, but Morris ound an extra ity dollars in his next ay enveloe the equivalent o two weeks salary. Paul E. Bierley, The Works o ohn Phili Sousa (Westerville, Ohio: Integrity Press, 1984), 50. Used by ermission. Editorial Notes Throughout Sousa s career as a conductor, he oten altered the erormance o his marches in seciic ways without marking or changing the rinted music. These alterations were designed or concert erormances and included varying dynamics and omitting certain instruments on reeated strains to exand the range o the musical textures, as well as adding unscrited ercussion accents or dramatic emhasis at key oints in the music. Although Sousa never documented his erormance techniques himsel, several layers who worked extensively with Sousa rovided directions or his requently erormed marches, most notably rom cornetist Frank Simon. Many o the marches in this volume o The Comlete Marches o ohn Phili Sousa were stales in Sousa s regular concert reertoire and were included in the Encore Books used by the Sousa Band. A comlete set o his Encore Books resides in the U.S. Marine Band Library and Archives and are reerenced extensively by the Marine Band not only as a guide or some o Sousa s secial erormance ractice, but also to ascertain the exact instrumentation he emloyed in his own erormances o his marches. The Comlete Marches o ohn Phili Sousa aears in chronological order and is based on some o the earliest known sources or each comosition. These newly edited ull scores correct many mistakes and inconsistencies ound in the arts o early ublications; however, all o the other exressive markings and the original scoring are largely reserved. Where instruments are added to the original ublished orchestration, it is guided by the additional arts Sousa sanctioned in his Encore Books where alicable or based on these tyical doublings. Additionally, the alterations traditionally emloyed

by the United States Marine Band in erormance are incororated throughout; either those seciically documented by Sousa s musicians or changes modeled on the customary ractices o The March King in his own erormances. The musical decisions included in these editions were inluenced by the work o several outstanding Sousa scholars combined with many decades o Marine Band erormance tradition. These editions would not be ossible without the excetional contributions to the study o Sousa s marches by Catain Frank Byrne (USMC, ret.), onathan Elkus, Colonel Timothy Foley (USMC, ret.), Loras Schissel, Dr. Patrick Warield, and The March King s brilliant biograher, Paul Bierley. Perormance ractices that deviate rom the original rinted indications are described below and aear in [brackets] in the score. There are many instances in which these alterations aear side-by-side with the original markings in this edition in an eort to clearly document where and how these deviations occur. An oen diamond marked with an accent in the cymbal art indicates that the cymbal layer should let that accent ring or an additional beat beore rejoining the bass drum art. Introduction (m. 1-4): The recommended temo is 122 bm. The articulations in the original arts to this march are notably inconsistent. Most o the sixteenth notes are without any articulation indication, but the common erormance ractice in the Marine Band is to slur many o these igures beginning with those in m.. This edition relects this ractice and regulates all o the articulation inconsistencies. The cymbal crash in the oening measure may be choked or let to ring. First Strain (m. 5-28): Ater a ortissimo oening to this march, the irst strain should be layed a notch soter at orte. Many o the sixteenth-note trilet igures in this strain have a crescendo marked underneath; accordingly, each may swee u into an accented downbeat but then relax the dynamic to the basic level o orte throughout. Accents are added in the ercussion to highlight the melodic shae. Second Strain (m. 28-5): Only cornets and trombones are tacet at the beginning o this strain while all others lay mezzo-iano. However, with the tutti crescendo and diminuendo in m. 4-6, the brass enters again or just these measures, er Frank Simon s recollection o Sousa s erormance ractice. Ater our more measures o tacet, the brass rejoins again in m. 41 or the tutti crescendo that leads to one more statement o the irst strain. The second time through the second strain is layed exactly as the irst time. Trio (m. 5-85): Piccolo, E-lat clarinet, cornets, trombones, and cymbals are tacet beginning with the ick-u note in m. 5. Articulations were once again inconsistent in the original arts or this trio and have been matched in this edition to highlight the wonderul hrase o this melody. Exressive dynamic markings have been added throughout and should be done subtly. The bass drum art is also traditionally altered in erormance rom the original in this trio to outline the melody, and that ractice is documented in this edition. Break Strain (m. 85-105): All instruments rejoin on beat two o m. 85 with a subito ortissimo. Cymbals are choked in m. 86, 88, 94 and 96, but let to ring in m. 89 and 97. In Marine Band erormances, a ratchet is traditionally added to the woodblock/snare drum rim art in m. 102-104, and that has been notated in this edition. A quick diminuendo is added to the low brass eighth notes in m. 105 irst time, and all others who lay on beat two execute a subito iano here or the irst time through the inal strain. Final Strain (m. 105-19): Piccolo, E-lat clarinet, cornets, trombones, and cymbals are tacet irst time and all others lay iano. Clarinets lay the melody down one octave as indicated. All instruments rejoin in m. 17 or the reeat o the break strain. A crescendo is layed this time in m. 105 and the last time through is layed at a strong ortissimo and in the original higher octave or clarinets. Accents in the ercussion highlight the rises in the melody in m. 106, 108, 122, and 124, along with two very strong sz accents to answer the downbeat igures rom the rest o the band in m. 14 and 15 the last time.
