Slovenia
Historical development of erosion control works (more than 100 years) Wild torrent management is essential for the existance of human in alpine areas of Slovenia Some historical data on sediment transport monitoring
Many watercourses are sediment depleted riverbed erosion process (Sava, Kamniška bistrica, Savinja, Mura), potential collapsing of lateral structures
Sedimentation of the reservoirs for hydropower production monitored and managed by the plant operators Lake Bled bathimetry (Harpha sea, d.o.o., www.harphasea.com)
Outbursts of sediments in montanous regions concessions for the sediment removal and maintenance of watercourses and torrent management Intensive erosion and sedimentation phenomena
Evaluation ofthe policy framework concerning sediment management: Partially addressed, mainly regarding the regulation of abstractions. Broader issue of sediment management is not covered. The regulations from this point of view are therefore existent, but broader legislation for the sediment management from the comprehensive point of view is absent. Insufficient funding is limiting the implementation of those aspects(i.e. monitoring).
Climate change and sediment transport Trend in climate change is Slovenia is showing the increased intensity of precipitation thus affecting the sediment transport (release and transport) as well. The strongest challenge might be in the improved erosion control limiting the releases of the sediments to the streams.
Sediment monitoring -Level of systematic sediment monitoring in the Republic of Slovenia is insufficient, monitoring is performed for the purpose of hydropower management, monitoring the siltation of the reservoirs
Major knowledge gaps Low frequency and density of sediment transport monitoring, the modelling experience is weak, decision making process Improvements development of specific projects (DRA_MUR_CI) Other research projects from: Project DRA-MUR-CI, Jecl and al. (2010)
Knowledge about the status of sediment regime Transportation of suspended material in Slovenian rivers Suspended sediment monitoring sites (Florjana Ulaga, ARSO) Annual values of suspended sediment transport (1000 tons)
Artificial floods- crue morphogène This issue was not considered and verified yet, the modelling results (response of downstream mofologyshould be predicted.
Improvingthe ecomorphologicalstatus in river reaches downstream of big reservoirs The issue is affecting cross-border issues with Italy and Croatia. The issue is also present in the relation between Slovenia and Austria on Mura/Mur river(ongoingproject).

Emptying / flushing of reservoirs: Staus: Growingconcern historicallysome tests were performed, in some cases problems with sediment quality
LIDAR DTM systematic scanning for the entire Slovenia is under way 5 pt. Per m2; 2 pt. Per m2 in mountain zones. Registry of hydraulic structures
Ongoing development of the registry of hydraulic structures management of all related processes
Sediment trapsandtheirmaintenance:
The issue of sediment management was not in the frontline of water management -the request is not so explicit in EU directives. It has strong historical background in Slovenia. Some management systems and approaches are operating, some of them on project level. The system should be stranghened, some developmets are under way.
