Aliphatic & Aromatic Amines Amines are relatives of ammonia, 3, in which the hydrogen atoms on nitrogen have been replaced by one or more noncarbonyl substituent groups. Aliphatic amines in which alkyl groups replace hydrogen are slightly more basic than ammonia.
