Element Cube Project (x2) Background: As a class, we will construct a three dimensional periodic table by each student selecting two elements in which you will need to create an element cube. Helpful Links for Research: http://www.webelements.com http://periodic.lanl.gov/index.shtml http://www.ptable.com/ Directions: Collect data about your element using reference materials and internet sites. Construct the element cube. Place the data collected neatly on the 6 sides of the cube following the instructions. Starting off: Select two elements from the Periodic Table by signing up in class. Try and choose one element that you know and one that you don t know. Total Marks CUBE DETAILS Side #1 Symbol and Basic Information: (K /5) K /5 T /10 C /16 1. Symbol of your element (make this large on your cube). My elements: 2. Name of the element. 3. Atomic Number and Atomic Mass 4. Slogan or Catch Phrase Side #2 Images: (C /4) 5. You must have at least two pictures of your element. Pictures may be printed out from the Internet or photocopied (you should make them small so they fit on the cube). Important: you must place a caption under each photo which describes what the picture represents. Side #3 Physical & Chemical Properties: (T /10) 6. Color: 11. Odor: 7. State of matter at room temperature: 12. Texture: 8. Density: 13. Flammability: 9. Melting point: 14. How reactive is it? (Will it combine with other elements?) 10. Boiling point:

Side #4 Periodic Table Information: (C /6) 15. Type of Element: 16. Period: 17. Group Number: 18. Name the family to which your element belongs: 19. Other elements in this family (choose 5) 20. What are the characteristic of this chemical family? Side #5 History, Background, and Use. (C /6) 21. Provide background history of your element. Who discovered, or first identified your element? What country? When? 22. Where is your element found and how is it obtained? How is your element separated from other materials found with it? 23. How and where is your element used? Where do you bump into your element in everyday life? (either in its pure form, in compound form, or in mixture form) Side #6 Your Details 24. Your name, course code, date, teacher s name Cube Construction: Use the construction template to outline the parts of the cube. Do not cut and assemble yet! Glue your parts on before you put the cube together. Construct the cube last. 2 3 1 4 6 2 3 1 5 6 4 5

Element Cube Project Template Use the template below to start gathering information about your element. Once it is finalized, add it to your cube itself.. Feel free to use as much colour, different paper, etc., as you wish. Atomic Number Side #1 (front) Atomic Mass X Side #2 (left) Pictures of (Element) You must have at least two pictures of your element. Pictures can be easily downloaded from the above websites. Important: you must place a caption under each photo. Cut and paste your photos and information Name of Element Slogan or Catch Phrase

Side #3 (top) Physical & Chemical Properties Side #4 (right) Periodic Table Information Color: Odor: Type of Element: Family: State of matter at room temp: Texture: Period: Other elements in this family (choose 5) Density: Melting Point: Flammability: Reactivity: Group: What are the characteristic of this chemical family? Boiling Point:

Side #5 (bottom) History, Background, & Use 1. Provide background history of your element. Who discovered or first identified your element? What country? When? Side #6 (back) Your Details 1. Your name, course code, date, teacher s name 2. Where is your element found and how is it obtained? How is your element separated from other materials found with it? 3.
