SOUTH CAROLINA HALL OF FAME Correlation with South Carolina Standards
South Carolina Social Studies Standards Late 20th and Early 21st Centuries - Cold War America Topics include Charles Bolden, Astronaut, NASA, Space Shuttle program, Segregation, Challenger explosion, Arlington Cemetery, Ronald E. McNair Middle School, Dr. Ronald E. McNair Life History Center, Challenger Centers SC Science Academic Standards Standard 4.E.3: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the locations, movements, and patterns of stars and objects in the solar system. 4.E.3A. Astronomy is the study of objects in our solar system and beyond. A solar system includes a sun, (star), and all other objects that orbit that sun. Planets in our night sky change positions and are not always visible from Earth as they orbit our Sun. Stars that are beyond the solar system can be seen in the night sky in patterns called constellations. Constellations can be used for navigation and appear to move together across the sky because of Earth s rotation. 4.E.3A.1 Develop and use models of Earth s solar system to exemplify the location and order of the planets as they orbit the Sun and the main composition (rock or gas) of the planets. 8.E.4A Earth s solar system is part of the Milky Way Galaxy, which is one of many galaxies in the universe. The planet Earth is a tiny part of a vast universe that has developed over a span of time beginning with a period of extreme and rapid expansion. 2
8.E.4A.1 Obtain and communicate information to model the position of the Sun in the universe, the shapes and composition of galaxies, and the measurement unit needed to identify star and galaxy locations 8.E.4A Earth s solar system is part of the Milky Way Galaxy, which is one of many galaxies in the universe. The planet Earth is a tiny part of a vast universe that has developed over a span of time beginning with a period of extreme and rapid expansion. 8.E.4A.2 Construct and analyze scientific arguments to support claims that the universe began with a period of extreme and rapid expansion using evidence from the composition of stars and gases and the motion of galaxies in the universe. 8.E.4B Earth s solar system consists of the Sun and other objects that are held in orbit around the Sun by its gravitational pull on them. Motions within the Earth-Moon-Sun system have effects that can be observed on Earth. 8.E.4B.1 Obtain and communicate information to model and compare the characteristics and movements of objects in the solar system (including planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and meteors). 3
Biography One of three astronauts inducted into the South Carolina Hall Of Fame, was one of the shuttle astronauts who were lost in the Challenger explosion on January 28, 1986. Born and raised in Lake City, South Carolina, Dr. McNair graduated from Carver High School and went on to receive a BS in Physics from North Carolina A&T State University, a Ph.D. in Physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Honorary Doctorate of Laws from North Carolina A&T State University. In 1978 Dr. McNair was one of 35 applicants selected from a pool of 10,000 for the NASA astronaut program. In February of 1984 he flew on STS-41-B aboard the space shuttle Challenger as a mission specialist, becoming the second African-American to fly in space. His second mission was STS-51-L, the mission where the space shuttle Challenger exploded nine miles above the Atlantic Ocean just 73 seconds after take-off. 4
