\ ' = Dublin Ireland. 11th September 1939. Dear Missy It seems ten years since the declaration ot War a week ago. and I know how stunned and sickened the President must bave been. Until the invasion or Poland last Wednesday hope persisted end many people still believed = Box 10; Folder = Correspondence: Cudahy John 19391940 r could be averted. But I got thoroughly ted up and irritated w1th tbe type who always told you "there's not going to be any War; I Just teel it ". I not get any satisfaction over being one ot the "Itoldyousos" but tor five years I persistently took the gloomy view that a general War 1n Europe wa9 inevitable. Some of the stories ot the Atbenla survivors were enough to make you weep. F111es were separated and there were many afflicting scenes that brought the Cbr very close. Then too I have strong personal tetlings over the whole thing tor I spent tour years in Poland Kiss Margaret 1e Band The White House Washingt on. and z

I know t he President 1s working hours without end these days and I am the las t one in the world to bother him with anything unnecessary but do you think you could get him to sign a note something like the enclosed? It was r eally impressive the way the Galway authorities handled four hundred and thirty people/homeless and destitute suddenly pro Jected into their midst.
